Lyrics:
In the merry month of June, From me' home I started,
Left the girls of Tuam, So sad and broken hearted,
Saluted father dear, Kissed me' darlin' mother,
Drank a pint of beer, Me' grief and tears to smother,
Then off to reap the corn, Leave where I was born,
Cut a stout blackthorn, To banish ghost and goblin,
Bought a pair of brogues, Rattled o'er the bogs,
Frightened all the dogs,On the rocky road to Dublin.
One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.
While in Mullingar that night, I rested limbs so weary,
Started by me' lake, Me' spirit is bright and cheery
Took a drop of the pure, To keep me' heart from sinkin',
That's the Paddy's cure, When ever he's on for drinking.
To see the lassies smile, Laughing all the while,
At me' curious style, 'Twould set your heart a-bubblin'.
Asked if I was hired, Wages I required,
Till I was almost tired, Of the rocky road to Dublin.
One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.
[Interlude]
Well, in Dublin next arrived, I thought it be a pity,
To be so soon deprived, A view of that fine city.
So then I took a stroll, Down among the quality,
Bundle it was stole, And in a neat locality;
Something crossed me' mind, Then I looked behind;
No bundle could I find, Upon me' stick a wobblin'.
Enquirin' for the rogue, Said me' Connacht brogue,
Wasn't much in vogue, On the rocky road to Dublin.
One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.
While, From there I got away, Me' spirits never failin'
Landed on the quay, Just as the ship was sailin';
Captain at me roared, Said that no room had he,
Then I jumped aboard, A cabin found for Paddy,
Then down among the pigs, Played some hardy rigs,
Danced some hearty jigs, The water round me bubblin',
When off Holyhead, Wished me' self was dead,
Or better farther instead, On the rocky road to Dublin.
One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.
The boys of Liverpool, When we safely landed,
Called me' self a fool; I could no longer stand it;
Blood began to boil, Temper I was losin',
Poor ould Erin's isle They began abusin',
"Hurrah my soul," sez I, Shillelagh I let fly;
Galway boys were by, Saw I was a hobble in,
With a loud hurray, Joined in the affray.
Quickly cleared the way, For the rocky road to Dublin.
One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

....This is a 'folk' song....There is no such thing as the 'wrong' lyrics. They change. May or June.....Near or Nigh...As long as the meanings are the same. Different groups put their own take on this incredible fun tune....

Many of you lose the point of this song. The singer leaves the place he was born. They love him in Mullingar. They rob in in Dublin. They fight for him as outlanders in Liverpool. Boys, they'll love us in the next town over. They'll revile us in our holy cities. And our truest brothers will meet us in the lands of strangers and cover our backs in a ruck. Watch out. A true brother will stab you in the back. A truer stranger will stand with you when you need him to. May you all stand strong enough alone on your own two feet.

+Joshua McKenna The words were written by D.K. Gavan, "The Galway Poet", for the English music hall performer Harry Clifton (1824-1872), who popularised the song.[1][2]The song describes the many troubles and travails that the protagonist encounters on this travels. At the beginning of the songs, the protagonist of the story states that he is "off to reap the corn" or intending to become a migrant agricultural labourer. He begins his journey by bidding farewell to his family and friends. He leaves his hometown of Tuam on foot, resting in Mullingar where the local women make fun of his clothes. He next arrives in the Irish capital city Dublin, but is robbed of his meagre possessions, but struggles to find the thief and is mocked for his Connacht accent ("Connacht brogue wasn't much in vogue", The term brogue generally refers to an Irish accent). He hops a ship in the harbour headed for England, and is placed in the hold with the pigs where he experiences severe sea sickness off the coast of Holyhead, Wales. He arrives in the English city Liverpool where he is mocked by the locals because of his Irishness. He engages them in a fight using his blackthornshillelagh, but is outnumbered until a group of Irishmen from County Galway come to his rescue ("join in the affray"), the first people who have helped him on his voyage.

Okay listen. I was out skidooing in northern Alberta and meet up with some great people. And we where talking about the rock and this band came up in the conversation. I saw them live in saint John at a club that was a church at one time ,it was first visit there. Anyway we walked in and the whole place was jumping it was fully alive and they where playing this song. Truly an awesome site and a very technical song. They played it perfectly. I played the song for them and they instantly started dancing .

Before Louis Pasteur's findings were fully accepted, many folks saw alcohol as purified water. Thus, the connotation that the "pure" is indeed Irish Whisky. In a local setting, it may be beer as well, but beer spoils fast while traveling. So, that is why whisky is a much more reliable drink for the road.
