Fascinating as always! I wonder would Kemmitt/Kemmit that's only found in a small part of Co Sligo take its name from some continental influences?

Hey there, I had a look and unfortunately wasn't able to find anything about this surname. I will keep an eye out now though.

@@BrehonAcademy Thanks for the reply love the channel! My Great Grandmother was a Kemmit. Its only really one parish in Co Sligo on the 1901 census. Another strange name only found in Central Roscomon is "Carlos" maybe some settlers from the Spanish armada

Naoimh in Irish used to translate to holy before the Catholic church chamged the meaning of the word to saints. My name is that and my ancestor was hung by his neck outside his family home in Tynagh County Galway for his rebellion against the crown. His lands were confiscated and given to the earl of clonrickard. The MacNaoimhín or MacCnámhín family are an ancient clan from Galway. I never heard anything about the OCnámhín or ONaoimhín being changed to Mc. I like the subject of Irish family names and i was only recently talking about it with someone. That the anglo norman names and Roman names that today people think they are Irish and they are not

That's right. Naoimh means holy or spiritual. The higher classes in early Ireland were called the Nemed because of this.

Carrick or Carruth?
@BrehonAcademy21 сағат бұрын
Carrick (see Carrig). (Mac) Carrig, Carrigy is derived from the Gaelic Mac Concharraigh ('con', a hound - 'carraig', a rock). Carrig and Carrick may also be 'de Carraig', referring to some notable rock, or, in the case of the Anglo-Norman family, to Carrick in Ayshire, Scotland. Carrig is confined to Cos. Clare and Limerick, but MacCarrick is mainly found in Ulster and Co. Roscommon.

Know much about the Hickey’s?
@BrehonAcademy2 жыл бұрын
They were hereditary physicians to the noble families of Ireland and their name appears on a famous Irish chain of pharmacies to this day.
