In this video I am going to talk about chuig and go dtí which both mean to as in going to a certain location. But whether you use chuig or go dtí entirely depends on the context of the situation and I'll explain clearly and unambiguously where this distinction lies. This is a very useful Irish Grammar tip and once you are aware of this rule you will be able to speak and write with much more confidence.

I'm glad to help, Duolingo can be good for dipping your toe in the water but it's very limited in terms of detail and explanations.

I was always "muddled up " but today you cleared that confusion and I'm really indebted to you for this! Now I hope I'm not gonna make mistakes!😀. @LearnIrish

Yes chun can be used in the Ulster dialect and ag dul is a verbal noun similar to the English word "going" nualeargais.ie/gnag/chuig.htm

Go raibh mile maith agat, a Dhane! I found this video especially helpful, as I have been perplexed about when to use chuig/go dti ever since I began studying Irish, nearly two years ago, and none of the other sources I've encountered ever spelled it out as clearly as you did here! I had to simply guess based on the context in which I encountered Irish speakers using the alternate phrases, which, like so many other aspects of teaching oneself a language, is like trying to assemble a jigsaw puzzle with no idea of the picture one is trying to create. It simply emerges slowly, through trial and error, unless a helpful person like yourself sheds some light on the work. Go raibh maith agat, aris, agus beannactai ort! Slan go foill! --N

“Jigsaw puzzle without knowing the picture”. This is a great analogy for my efforts trying to learn Irish by myself. I saw this video on “go dti” while back. And today I heard a sentence I did not understand but I recognized “go dti”. Had to come back to this video to figure it out. Buiochas!

Thank you, Dane. I have a question. One example you used was "Chuamar chuig ionad imeachtaí..." Since activity centre is a place, why do we use chuig and not go dtí?
@LearnIrish
@LearnIrish 4 жыл бұрын
Because although it might be a place, it's a place where activities take place.

So then, if you were to say "I went to the disco last night", and nothing else to qualify what you were up to, would you still use chuig for that, even though you're just going to the place? Or would you use "chuig" still?
@LearnIrish
@LearnIrish 2 жыл бұрын
I'd probably say go dtí if going no further than the disco.

Dane, I've been learning Irish for a year now, and your videos are great! I like this one, as I had forgotten some of the specifics of "chuig," "go dtí" and "chun." This does a great job with the first two, but I have one question: Why is it "Chuamar chuig ionad imeachtaí," when the activity center is a PLACE. Go raibh míle maith agat!

A chara, an dtiocfadh leat a insint dom an áit a bhfuil an riail seo le fáil i ngraiméar de chinéal inteacht. Tá a leithéid seo: 'Shiúil mé go dtí mo mháthair' (duine, ach le 'go 'dtí') go hiomlán ceart. Ar lch. 40 de GGBC (1999), tá an frása 'go dtí iad'. Tá samplaí den chineál sin le feiceáil go fras sa litríocht fosta, Séamus Ó Grianna mar shampla, "Chuaigh siad caol díreach go dtí iad." (Mo Dhá Róisín, lch 68) I dtaca le himeachtaí de, níl fadhb ar bith le 'go dtí' ansin ach oiread, go bhfios dom: 'Chuaigh siad go dtí an tsochraid,' mar shampla. I dtaca le gabháil chuig áit agus gan a ghabháil níos faide ná sin, an bhfuil fadhb le chuig/chun? San áit a bhfuil an sampla agat 'Chuaigh mé go dtí an pháirc', ní bheadh fadhb le 'Chuaigh mé chuig an bpáirc', agus ní chaithfeadh sé go dteachaigh tú coischéim níos faide.
