I’m a native English speaker from the U.S., and have enjoyed studying several Romance and European languages. I have an Irish heritage, and have always wanted to to learn the language. After a few failed attempts (by lack of quality material,) I’ve found a renewed vigor from watching your videos. Your choice of topics, as well as clear and concise presentation, have given me a newfound clarity and understanding as a beginning learner. Thank you especially for taking a moment in this video to address the differences amongst dialects. I’ve learnt at this point not to pay too much attention to it, but it’s nice to know a few particulars. Míle Buíochas!

Welcome back on your journey, I think a lot of people, including me, have been taken by Irish but with varying levels of consistency and determination. I'm delighted to be able to help, good luck and enjoy, go n-éirí leat agus bain sult as.

Clear, Clear! pronunciation. Thank you. I could even follow what vowels were important to pronounce and which to ignore. If I could find a verbal vowel and consonant chart that be good. Thank again Dane. John

Great vid. What are the root meanings of the names of the days? You know how the English days of the week are named after the moon, the sun, Saturn and four Norse Gods. Knowing the meanings would help me to remember.

I must look into that and make a video on that topic.

Would you consider working with Duolingo? I’m trying to learn Irish with that as a main tool but despite the fact that it’s gotten better there are still too few audio files on there considering Irish has vastly different phonetics from English
@abloodorange52332 жыл бұрын
It’s main problem in my opinion( I have completely mastered the skill tree) is the reduced amount of vocab, (there are only 1,700 words available, so you can’t even reach the final achievement of learning 2,000 words from one language on Duolingo) along with using anglicised versions of Irish words. For example: Dabht instead of amhras, madra rua instead of sionnach, foráiste instead of coillte. Maybe it just rubs me the wrong way but I totally agree with you that there is a lack of audio files, in other languages on Duolingo you can click on the word with dots under it and the audio file plays. I believe they have halted work on improving the skill tree, they’ve been talking about a ‘massive update’ for years. It just hasn’t happened.

I don't have any connection with Duolingo and its a fairly basic language app.

Why are there usually two ways to say a day and when do you use one versus the other? I'm a pretty Raw beginner. Your videos are immersive, if there is such a word and very helpful. I figured you wouldn't mind because the Irish are after all consummate wordsmiths. GRMA
@LearnIrish2 жыл бұрын
Well you're certainly not wrong, áisiúil would be a good word I suppose, meaning useful. I wouldn't worry about the days of the week, in English you can say Monday, On Monday, This Monday or Mondays so just think about it that way.

But what is the difference between these two names of each day? "An" is "The", if I understand right. What does "De" mean? Thank you!
@LearnIrish5 жыл бұрын
Not a big difference, if an is before, like An Luan its just Monday but Dé Luain is on Monday.
