One of my favorite bits of etymology: the word "brandy" is shortened from "brandywine." "Brand" is an old root meaning "burnt," referring to how it's made by using fire to distill wine. @@isbjrn358 While I usually drink it straight, when I lived in Mainz and Wiesbaden in the early 90s Asbach and Cola was a common drink. I even toured their distillery in Rüdesheim. I have 5 bottles at home right now. Some 8yr and some 3yr. versions.

Wisconsin drinks so much brandy that Korbel of California sells 1/3 of its world wide production here. Mostly SE Wisconsin. Good stuff. Top shelf. My favorite Irish whiskey is Bushmills 12 year.

Gráinne, it's good to see Cork represented, even if it's "only" from Mallow. My family is from Midleton, but spread across the south, as far as Skibbereen in the west, and east to Dungarvan in Waterford. I don't think anyone in my family died where they were born. You MUST try the Laird's Applejack & brandy line from the oldest distillery in the US. Applejack is like an 80 proof whiskey made with apples. Next in line is the Straight Applejack 86 proof, made in the same way as pre-prohibition. After that is the 100 proof Straight Apple Brandy Bottled in Bond, then a variety of apple brandies, from 7-1/2 years to 12 years. I've had most and they are amazing. I wish I could send you some. For the Asbach it is very nice, but try it in a Rudesheim Kaffe. This is made with: three sugar cubes, a healthy shot of Asbach, which is then heated and set alight. Strong coffee is added, and the drink is then topped with a vanilla sugar sweetened cream and chocolate shavings. It is sinfully delicious. Ask for it in a German restaurant, you'll love it.

The Asbach (uralt) is what the germans use in their version irish coffee (coffee with whipped cream, sugar (preferably brown crystals) and alcohol - dissolve sugar first, then cream, then alcohol)... obviously the spaniards do the same, but with a cheaper version than the one you tried here ;-)

So many American military in Germany have tried Asbach. If you go to a bar in Germany it is usually a huge bottle turned upside down and the bartender will just push a glass into the opening and it will pour out. Huge bottle! When I was in the US Army we all tried it and drank shots of it with our beers. Great brandy.

Brandy is a complex beverage, some alcohol like Vodka even the cheap crap can be drank with minimal difficulty. But Brandy and Regular Wine, either it's great or terrible. But when I find a good yet affordable Brandy it is fantastic.

I fell in love with Asbach when I was stationed in Bamberg, Germany during my time in the US Army. It's quite expensive here in the States, if you can find it. Many times, most liquor stores have to order it. Hence the high price tag. But it's worth every penny.

Brandy, if I remember right, is concentrated wine. You make it by, first, making a wine, and then freezing it a few times to sperate the alcohol from the water.

At the beginning of *Dracula,* Jonathan Harker is picked up at the Borgo Pass by Dracula's coach - - the coachman (Dracula in disguise) tells Harker that there is a flask of Slivovitz under the seat if he desires a drink on the way to the castle. Cardenal Mendoza is one of the best of the Spanish brandies (which are made in Jerez de la Frontera, where Sherry is made); the other primo Spanish brandy is Lepanto. Having the Tryers try sherry sometime (or port) would be a good show. For sherry you go with Cream, Oloroso, Fino and Amontillado - - you can add a brandy if you need five instead of four.

When I was a child, my Babcia used to drink jezynowka when she had a cold. She said it helped her to feel better. If course it did. It's liquor. Years later, I still do this when I take sick. I much prefer a good bourbon over brandy, but I'll save that for when I'm not ill.

My favorite use for brandy is when I'm making chocolate truffles (Sorry Lolsy). The flavor of Korbel matches so nicely with the chocolate. This video actually made me want to make a batch of them.
