Home cooking foodie here, I have discovered these and learnt to make them. I have tried adding herbs to the mix, Italian parsley, mint or oregano. Also shredded cheddar cheese and they came out wonderful. Next time, will try different toppings, mushrooms, tomatoes, basil a la pizza style and cook it in the oven.

I made these tonight, turned out so delicious. I'll be having an Ulster fry up in the morning.

Thank you for sharing this. My mother used to make them. She learned them from her mother who would spend Wednesday's making them for the Thursday Fry where they'd be warmed in the pan with all of the bacon and sausage drippings. There's nothing quite like an Ulster Fry. Oh the memories, the smells, the lovely accents.

I agree about butter. My mother started buying margarine when I was at school, so I went and bought my own butter. There is no substitute. Good man, many thanks.

I grew up with what we always called potato bread. My Dad is from Newcastle, NI so we always cooked them in a dry pan but my Mum from Scotland grew up with cooking them with butter. The dry pan won.

My other is from Belfast and taught me to make these for our Belfast fry. I first tasted these wonderful potato cake in Belfast in a Belfast fry...never forgot them and made them when we came back home. Belfast fry has broiled sweetened tomato halves, pink sausage rounds, sausage, bacon, Canadian Ham or Irish (too salty) and these wonderful potato farls or potato cakes with fried eggs and HP sauce of course....mmmm with a nice cuppa tea.

As kids, we could smell potato cakes being 'cooked' from miles away; served 'hot' off the stove, with lashings of cold butter, and a mugeen o' tea; it was also the quickest way to get us all up on a cold and frosty morning! lol

@@DominicMagliocco You couldn't hear the poor man sniffing all the way through this? LOL. Everybody does it but when you watch yourself on film you realise how disgusting and distracting it is. Like when girls on KZbin constantly fiddle with their hair :)

I wasn't sniffing. I have one lung.
@ciganyweaverandherperiwink62934 жыл бұрын
@@DominicMagliocco WOW! Then definitely consider putting some text on the screen to explain and people would be far more likely to understand instead of feeling natural irritation. I bet if you did a bit of editing and re-titled this video as "Man with One Lung Makes Delicious Authentic Irish Farl' and reuploaded it right at the start of the pandemic it would have gone viral...pardon the pun. I wish you would have-- it's actually the best tutorial for this on the internet. I hope you're doing well, I'm sure you've been terrified at times during the past few months. This video needs to be re-discovered with a little nod to the source of the "sniffing". Take care, hope you'll make more videos. :)
