Etienne Charles said, "jazz is when you take the music, and make it yours and then give it to someone" that is so beautiful

Gary Bartz would disagree on the word jazz, and fight for the word music. Anyhow, see for example Chopin took the music of Bach, Polish folkmusic and dances and the Belcanto singing style of the Italian opera and made it his own and gave to someone or some more. He was well known for improvisation at his livetime. There were unfortunately no recordings. The way they could record themselves was on the paper as a composer. Imagine there wouldn’t be recordings of Charlie Parker today. How people would speculate just by the black dots on the paper if he was great or just good. You know the gap of quality when you hear a student playing Parker from the sheet without ever heard any recording.

Jazz is freedom. Freedom because you can choose the type of genre you most like such as Classic Jazz, Blues, Bebop, hard-bop, Dixieland, etc. Freedom, because you can improvise and change the type of note you play. Freedom, because you can create and don't be afraid of experimenting new type of music.

I believe that part of jazz is a mystery. And its ok, good even, that we don't know what that is. I would live to hear someone say, when asked the question what is jazz? - 'i don't know'

Words that have biographies (which "Jazz" certainly does) can't be "defined"--any more than people can be. To define something or someone is to draw a line under it, to terminate it. That being said, one can convey something of the character of a thing like jazz, in the same way one can convey something of the character of a person--by telling stories. And in that sense, the really lovely story from Etienne Charles, that ends this video, is well worth hearing: "...She started smiling! I was like: That's what jazz is. Jazz is when you take the music, and make it yours, and then give it to someone. That's all Jazz is." I'm honestly not sure I've ever heard a better story about the nature of Jazz than that one.

And so one thing for sure is that we all cant agree on what jazz is. Because jazz is subjective. Like, i love jazz but i hate blues. Is that even possible according to what these people say? But i do hate blues, my soul just rejects it, but i simply looove jazz. But then, i can probably call my music jazz as well.... Can't I?

Gary Bartz…..Truth …..listen to the words of wisdom. We must be careful of labels…..there is power in naming. AXE’…..we named our music Blues and Rhythm it was changed to Rhythm and Blues and not by us. Read Duke”s 1933 essay…..connect the dots

JAZZ- INTRO THEME, BODY AND CONCLUSION. IN THE BODY EVERY INSTRUMENT PLAYS THEIR INTERPRETATION OF THE THEME. THEN, EVERYONE RETURNS TO THE THEME AS A CONCLUSION....INSTRUMENTALS IS NOT JAZZ! JAZZ IS A GROUP OF STYLES. IT FOLLOWS "CLASSICAL" AND JAZZ MUSIC RULES. MOST THAT PLAY JAZZ CAN PLAY EUROPEAN WESTERN "CLASSICAL" MUSIC, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. RAGTIME IS CLASSICAL JAZZ.
