As for what's next after the AI update, Minitoon said he would add events to the demo, so I would say that is the next most likely update. about time ia2 got updated, nice to see some progress

NOTE: I recommend not playing as any small country, as I noticed that the AI dupes it's own units, I was playing as greece and invaded albania but they randomly spawned a 60 unit, plus I observed italy's ships multiplying when going past me.

Fact they can put world market trades, the npcs get 5x or 10x units to spawn every 6 months in the barracks, Fighting them mid-late game is hard so you must take down as many as you can in early game
