I own a 2018 six speed tour and am glad to see an iron butt video featuring our kind of ride. I’m planning my own saddle sore 1000, once the temps are warmer and the spring winds die down.

I rode from Dallas to Van Horn one day back in 1985. Yamaha Venture Royale (1983), pulling a trailer. One of the longest, PIA rides I’ve ever done.

Great video , thanks. I own a 2019 Goldwing. I had to laugh at the "sounds of 60 " moment. Ya know I cant step over and on to my Goldwing! I have to lean forward and kick my right leg over the topcase like some crazed ballerina. Or if its parked on a sturdy level surface I can step onto the footpeg and gracefully get onto the bike. Anyway , you made it safely , respect! Safe travels.

Congratulations SJ! You started off on a great bike. A couple of great features viewers may not be aware of on the Gold Wing’s are the “backlit handlebar switches” for low light/night riding and the incredible high decibel horn to get the attention of those distracted drivers. Looking great out there. You did fantastic all considering. Acquired experiences learned are priceless. Are you in the DFW area? Ride safe and often. Peace.

Thanks for sharing Iron Butt experience 1000 mile ride with everyone. Although I've taken that same route going to California it was just a old reminder of my trip there, plus I got a chance to see some changes in El Paso. I never owned a motorcycle so your experience gave me a chance to see what it's like behind the wheel of a motorcycle. Thanks bro!

I tried repling to your post a few days ago but it didn't go through. What I wanted to say though was you have to keep the mind set that age is only a number. But with that said, you have to plan your trip carefully, because everybody is not a biker and we have to drive for them too. I stuck to the major highways rather than smaller highways or back roads for safety. But you don't have do it all at one time, so plan your trip and it there a relative or friend that's close to your halfway point. You can ride there and then stop, take a break, relax getting off the bike for a few hours then start again. Just make sure you can finish in the24 hour period. It's just good planning and preperation. Good Luck and Stay Safe...SJ

I know the sounds when you were saying oh! Crap! I'm 63 and at 700 miles in one day I was thinking! Am I this stupid to push myself like this?? Since I'm retired! I gave up on the challenges and will ride no more than 450 miles! One thing I realized looking for small towns 20 miles off the interstate is less than half of the price than if I go with hotels on the interstate! I stopped in Laramie at $145.00 for a days Inn. To $40.00 to $50.00 for a nice motel twenty miles off the highway down the road! Another food for thought! KOA's suck! Because they are going to charge $20.00-$30.00. for a camp site. For $10.00-$15.00 more I can get a motel? Enjoy the ride! Then with the yeti in my trailer I carry tv dinners and drinks. Which saves $10.00 to $20.00 on restaurants/burger joints/convenience stores! Every truck stop/hotel has a micro wave. It's all about saying money where you can! It's getting expensive to travel! You have to save where you can! Three weeks ago I went from Kansas to Idaho! Once I left kansas I was spending $3.40 to $4.00 per gallon for fuel!
@sjontheway
@sjontheway 3 жыл бұрын
You are right but I don't think I could get use to pulling a trailer. Being from the south, I try not to look like I'm traveling esspecially alone. And small towns are a great way to save on hotel/motel expenses. There are lots of ways to cut down on cost of motorcycle travels but camping does not work for me.

I have experienced such a MPG loss on my bandit 1200 usually I would get 38 mph one time I got 29 in South Dakota because of the wind I was going into..this year I'm heading across the country on an FJR 1300 that gets 42 miles per gallon but I do believe I won't usually go past 150 miles without getting gas being that I don't know the area as well enough for possible gas station problems I'm certainly glad you did not run out to the middle of nowhere

I had the gas station problem last year when I was going from Kansas to Arizona! The gas station that is normally open wasn't! And with a third of a tank left I doubled almost 70 miles back to get gas! Ever since that event! Ever since then! I can't rely upon gas stations out in the middle of nowhere any more! I plan for larger towns! And also start searching for gas when I'm alittle above half a tank! Also! I checked my gas mileage pulling a very light trailer! I have the one that Northern tools sells that sits on a Harbor Fright trailer with lights. I was getting alittle better than forty at 75 miles per hour! I know the new ones have sport mode! That mode tends to use more fuel! Maybe that is what you were in! I have a friend that has a new one and when we went to Sturgis! He swears he was getting 52 at 75 mph!
@sjontheway
@sjontheway 3 жыл бұрын
No Mike, I was in tour mode. But going into those high winds and at those speeds uses a lot of fuel. It's happen on my 2008 Goldwing but the difference was that I didn't have instant readouts on fuel consumption like on the 2020.

@@sjontheway thanks for the reply! We can learn so much from one another on long rides! I just did 1300 miles one way to Idaho and back!. I have a Goldwing which is very luxurious in every way! But the manufacture seems to fall short on comfort in their seats! I went to Idaho Falls Idaho from Wichita! Total 1236 miles Three weeks ago! Needless to say! After 300 miles I started needing to stop every 75 miles! What is your thoughts on the seat comfort problem??? Until I an figure out a better seat! I don't think I could do more than 700 miles!
@sjontheway
@sjontheway 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry just getting back to you...I just purchased a Corbin seat combo for my 2020. I like it so far but unfortunately the weather has not allowed me to put it on the road for a 400 to 500 mile test. And until I do, I can't honestly say yeah or nah. The price is to much for me to say for anyone to buy this seat but I can say that just sitting on one was enough for me to buy and try it. You can also fine reviews where people didn't like that seat so take your time making up your mind.

Is there a bigger aftermarket windshield you can get? That's why I will stay with my 1800! Bigger bike! And I don't have to deal with helmet buffeting with the winds! Get you a small trailer to carry some of your things! You will thank me for it! Of course you will have to take the bike to a non dealer to get the harness run! They do have the harness! It's just that Honda don't accept the idea of a trailer! Don't get a big trailer! Get one like I described! Because those Like Caliente pulls will eat up a rear tire in no time! Unless of course you go dark side!!
@sjontheway
@sjontheway 3 жыл бұрын
Yes there are bigger windshields but the stock one offers enogh protection for wind buffering on the helmet. Just use the adjustable windshield controls and raise the shield a little.

My goldwing is the 1800 series with the biggest windshield I could get! With the new Goldwing! Do you find the windshield adequate enough to protect you from winds from all sorts of angles???
@sjontheway
@sjontheway 3 жыл бұрын
I replaced my factory windshield with one from F4 Customs and it is great. But mine did not have the rubber stoppers in the package and without those my F4 is cracking from the vibrations against those plastic wind wings on the sides of the factory shield. F4 customs won't replace the shield and that's a $450 upgrade.

Congratulation great video I have a 2018 DCT I love the bike, the ride and performance is great but the stock seat is horrible. I would love to know how you did that on a stock or did you use the stock seat. I will tell you that I took my seat to Wingsoft in Bryan and it made all the difference in the world for me. I also live in Texas but have never ridden to El Paso have ridden to 27 states not counting my home state,keep up the vids I enjoyed watching.

Thanks for sharing. I also brought my seat to Wingsoft but it was worst than the stock seat. Also a co-worker of mine brought his seat before me (I didn't know) but he is now having someone else redo his seat. Wingsoft didn't work for him either. But I purchased a Speedmetal Gel Seat Pad from cycle gear that helps. Thanks again.

Sounds like you're ready to take the challenge. Everything you need to know can be found on their website www.ironbutt.org/ basically the documentation is the most important part. The mileage and start/stop times on the reciepts. Pictures of your reciepts next the you bike mileage throughout the trip and you'll have to send in your route on google maps to further verify your mileage. But everything you need to know can be found on the web. Good Luck, SJ
