At 79 y/o I still remember hearing this song when it was released for the first time.....I couldn't believe the sounds I was hearing in it's arrangement. So different, so strangely compelling at the same time. One of the true classics of the late sixties and early seventies. There was no better time to be a young and witness the great music that came from this era.

RIP Doug Ingle who passed away last Friday (5-24-24). Lead singer and keyboardist of Iron Butterfly. Doug wrote In A Gadda Da Vida. The lineup on this version of the song is the lineup I saw at the first concert I ever attended in my lifetime of seeing the greatest bands in the world ever since I was only 13. Obviously Iron Butterfly had an impact on me and shaped how I hear music. The only member still living is guitarist Mike Pinera and I am told he has been in a hospital fighting for his life quite some time now.

How I love this song from the Iron Butterfly, especially the longer version, it’s one of my favorites from them. I love the instrumental solos, and drums and drummer, lot of rhythm and resonance here. I’m glad I grew up in this era of music, from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s rock n roll era, a time when music was fun and enjoyable to listen to, and especially to dance to, and which I did a lot of it, including live performances without all the technical crap with today’s music. It was more simple, natural to hear each instrument, than today’s music with the technological advances involved. I had many records from many artists/musicians then and I sure wish I had them now, lost them while moving to another town….they always helped chase the blues away. I’m 74, and still listen to many of these songs whenever I can find them. I thank you for sharing this, and I’m grateful to have found this one here with the longer version….thank you….👍❤️🥰

So we went up to the smoke room, lit some is n drank some beer, put on In the Godda of Vida , an was completely blown away 💯🎶🎶🎶🎶 by them that day , we must’ve played that song aleast 3 times in a row, an I will never forget that beat n song I’m n my 60s n still remember that special day and moment, that changed the way I listen to different kinds of music, I thought at first it was satanic music at first, but as I listen to the words a changed my perspectives of the song and the music, absolutely fantastic sounds n musicians, watched this video n was blown away again 💯 thanks for the mind reboot 😊🎶🎶 long live Iron Butterfly 🦋

Got to see them perform this at their Austin Civic Center concert in 1970, on a barrel of Orange Sunshine. Words can't really describe the ecstatic spiritual event that it was. The concert was a Cosmic Church experience. We all processed down the isles slowly, reverently, in perfect step with the driving rhythm. Our minds and hearts immersed in spectacular lights and Love. Everyone in that hall was one with each other, one with the band and the band was one with us.

@@kathyneville9768 Kathy, what a great birthday! 5-10-20! We are very fortunate to have the internet now. We can see all the shows we went to, and the ones we missed- like Led Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden, 1973. Now that was a concert for all the Universe to enjoy. Aliens, light years away from us probably think the same thing! Come on- Jimmy Page, Stairway to Heaven, live? It just doesn't get any better than that- well, maybe Jimi live at Woodstock, August, 1969. We sure have had a great life. Cheers from sunny Mexico!

Saw them live in Toronto in the 70’s at Massey Hall. You will never guess who opened for them and where booed off the stage ‘The Turtles’. How nuts. In a Gadda da Vida was the first long play rock single ( 17 min ). It was a great concert, they say I had a great time. So glad I could spend my youth listening to the best rock music ever. But you know what they say” if you remember the 6 p’s ,you weren’t there, and I have 15 years of grey haze that is but a vague memory of great sounds. Thanks, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Van Morrison, King Crimson, Grand Funk Railroad, Joe Cooker , The Doobie Brothers , Canned Heat and Jrthro Tull to menti on a few.

We were in the club that night.....just a small club which I can't remember the name. The band show up unannounced and played that song.....we didn't know it was going to be them until they were invited up to the stage.....we freaked. So long ago......LA/Pasadena area....can't remember which.....but it was a great night. Had it been announced prior to that night the place would have been jammed to the rafters. They brought their own guitars but if I remember right, which I might not, but I believed the drummer (Ron) used the house band's drum kit. From what we found out later they were getting ready to do a tour.....a lot of well known bands would do that prior to going on tour......just come to small clubs and do small sets. Great night. We were high as a kite.....great frame of mind to listen to this group.....loved it. Frankly I had no idea it was filmed or on KZbin until tonight.

Mike Pinera & Rhino Reinhardt (seen here in this video) were good guitarists & were in the group for Butterfly's 4th album, Metamorphosis. But it was Eric Brann that did the iconic guitar work for In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida. Brann left the band in late 1969 over creative differences. He was amazing!

Great band and they're gonna still be playing this in 2067. Whatever became of Erik Brahnn? He was a classically trained violinist. And Mike Pinera went on to play with April Lawton in Ramatam. Rhino went with the original singer of Deep Purple Rod Evans and formed Captain Beyond with Bobby Caldwell.

Hah! I was in a band in high school & we played about 4 tunes from Iron Butterfly. The drummer picked up tickets for us to see them at the Filmore East in NYC. We made fun of the name of the opening act because it was similar to Iron Butterfly-iron is heavy, a butterfly is light, we thought it was a cover band or something! When "Led Zeppelin" took the stage, we freaked out. We had never heard anything like it. We had great seats, we enjoyed Iron Butterfly, but we had our minds blown away by that opening band.

As a drummer, I can say for myself that you will never feel more naked than doing a long drum solo. This solo was sensational, well thought-out, with a plan of attack. You can do a long solo if you plan it. Doing it live, and keeping it under control, is difficult live, because you have adrenaline unlike what you have in the studio. I love this tune, and this solo. It was the first solo I ever tried at age 13...it wasn't as good...
