A Materials Science problem that calculates the proeutectoid ferrite,,eutectoid ferrite, and cementite weight fractions and masses of a 0.3% C steel as it cools from austenite. Includes detailed explanation and two different examples of the lever rule. It also explains the concepts of eutectic and euctectoid.
Similar to problems from "Phase Diagram" chapters of Callister.

This is one of the topics Khan haven't made yet. The definitions you give is really great. Speak slow and precise. Thanks.

You are very welcome! I'd like to do some stuff for Khan, especially for engineering, as they have stopped short of these topics.

When you calculate pro-eutectoid ferrite, your tie line went passed the boundary (solidus). If instead your tie line stopped at the boundary, what would that indicate instead? Or does it not have any meaning?

+Lene Fosse Thanks, Katherine. 0.76% is the point at which carbon is eutectoid in iron in this composition. It is shown clearly on the diagram, but maybe I should have stated it explicitly.

In part (a) you refer to it as the pro-eutectoid Ferrite. Is the Austenite you solve for technically pro-eutectoid Austenite in part (a) as well? Or is it not because the beginning microstructure is pure Austenite?
@EngineeringandDesignSolutions
@EngineeringandDesignSolutions 8 жыл бұрын
+Nicholas Volkenant "Pro-Eutectoid Ferrite" is in contrast to the "Eutectoid Ferrite". PEF is Ferrite made before the eutectoid point, whereas EF is made at the eutectoid point. Austenite is not developed at either point and is actually transformed into other constituents as the temperature drops. Thus, there is no "pro-eutectoid Austenite", nor is there "eutectoid Austenite" because Austenite is not produced in these locations (assuming a drop in temperature). I hope that helps.
