i love how you pick up the appropriate themes associated with each symbolism or dialogue. If the first few episodes can make you teary eyed, then I don't know how would you deal with the upcoming episodes haha. Farmland saga is a treat, and it's just the beginning. Episode 9 is a masterpiece. Shall be waiting for your reaction to it ! :)

Ketil had to punish them because imagine he just spare them without any punishment, all the others planning to steal would just send kids to do it, so that they can get whatever they want from him without any loss. It was necessary process not just to give lesson to kids but also not to make any future disaster..

I think you have understood Ketil's character pretty good already. He seems like this nice guy that gives Thorfinn and Einar away to free themselves and being opposed to violence and war. But he is not the strong person that he is trying to be perceived as. In this episode we can see that he is weak. He is a slave owner after all. He profits from the free labor of the people he owns and don't forget that Arnheid doesn't even get a deal to obtain her freedom. He doesn't have the spine to stand up for what he thinks is right (as can be seen with the punishment of the kids) and he is against violence and war mainly because he is afraid of it. And it makes you question: Is he really that good of a person, if all his good deeds are done for the wrong, selfish reasons? He asks here "Why did you have to steal on my farm?". No real thought about them or empathy for the situation they are in, but more concerned about himself and that he has to punish them now to not look weak in front of the people around him. In the end I have to agree with you: Sverkel seems to be the better man than Ketil. Ketil looks nice on the surface, but Sverkel really is just and fair, even though he may seem rough and unapproachable at first.

Ketil didnt want to appeal to his son when deciding the punishment. In that times u simply had to punish tieves or else people would just sent their kids to ketils farm to let them steal cause he will not punish kids. Its not like he wanted to punish them but to not look weak to his men and more improtantly others that would take advantage of that he HAD to not look weak. I would say he quit dislikes what his son has become.

..... Are you seriously saying you missed the many hints the author left for us that screamed "Ketil is kind, but too weak mentally to act on them"? The Author left at least 3 hints in this episode. And no, punishing kid for stealing in extreme fashion isn't "Normal", this isn't the battlefield or Askelad's crew, this is a farm where the Master comand a team of Bodyguarda who follow him because he pays them money, not out of honor or pride. If you understand anything about Snkae you would know he doesn't care about morals or norse pride and honor; he only followd the rules and the rules say the Master of the farm is it's king and your employer so you follow him. The whole point of this entire episode is to show that their is a difference between being "terrified" of war and violence and "Hating" them.

one thing you mentioned - "how come they don't just hunt the deer" people who own the land in a forest during these times also own the forest itself and as such, peasants and/or slaves needed permission from the landowner to forage and/or hunt in the forest.

here is the thing... ketil follows Patel or snake suggestions because he has a fragile or weak actitude. With weak attitude I mean that he is unsecure about sharing his real thoughs

You really are giving Thorfin too much credit, he can't even halp himself at the moment let alone help others. Vinland isn't a show that skip steps in term of character development (Except Canute in season 1, but that has a lot to do with his character being extremely religious and his background as Prince) and don't make it easy for the characters to move forward; it will keep giving them obstacles that challenges what they learned and believe is right. Also, I have to point out how much I LOVE how the director handled the scene when Einar was fighting the other farmers; it felt like the show is telling us it's sick and taboo for farmers to fight each other when they're one whose job is to grow lands. The treats violence really well; they make it unbearable to watch when it's fr the perspective of farmer and normal people, but also make it feel very exciting and even glorifies it's when it's from the perspective of warriors like Thorkil and other warrior.
