Not big enough for hot enough. You would be risking stress fractures. This kind of forge would probably only be used for small things (hooks, rings, necklaces.) They'd need. Bigger burner and a longer forge for knives.
@benjaminfugate6216
@benjaminfugate6216 6 жыл бұрын
Ian S. I’m currently working as a bladesmith (3 years experience) and I wouldn’t say size is the issue, but the heat is a massive issue along with the rail track they’re using. My main forge I use is actually smaller than that lol, uses less propane, I can get nearly 8 hours of use from it unlike the 4-5 hours similar forges get.
@billcosby9156
@billcosby9156 6 жыл бұрын
The forge doesnt have the tenperture to heat it up. It cpuld barely heat up that round bar right there and that was soft steel. Hard steel would not get hot enoigh to quench it and using those steels are necessary

As someone currently building a bigger forge in a similar way; I highly recommend sealing the kaowool with refractory cement or a homemade analog. Over time, the fibers will break down and just not work as well as a solidified interior surface. It also helps to make some sodium silicate to glue down the kaowool to the interior of the can.

But if you really want to do something similar, try an empty propane(or helium. It's not so much a fire hazard) make sure the tank is empty, remove the valve, and chop off the top. There are various propane tank forge videos on KZbin.
@dadillac215
@dadillac215 6 жыл бұрын
You can also use an empty air tank. They are a dime a dozen and are an adequate size for a forge. Heck, you can even use the fire bricks alone to make one and then drill a hole in the side or top for the burner.

What about using two torches one in each hole to raise the temperature a little and give a more consistent heat across all the metal and maybe use the lid and some insulation on the lid to help retain more heat just put a decent size hole in the center to be able to put your metal in
