Iron Gate Hut is a standard 10-bunk hut located beside the Oroua river in the Ruahine Forest Park. Built in 2019 by the NZ Defense Force, this modern new hut replaces the old SF70 hut which was once used for wild animal control operations. The new hut is in mint condition and has some great modern features such as double glazed windows, smoke alarms and insulation in the ceiling. The surrounding forest is predominantly red beech and is home to native birds as well as red deer for hunting. The Oroua river is home to the very rare Whio (Blue Duck), and also rainbow and brown trout for fishing. The hut can be accessed from the Petersons road carpark, and the track passes by the Alice Nash Memorial Hut on the way to Iron Gate Hut. The track is decently formed and marked, but can be a bit ambiguous in places and does include some steep sections and stream crossings. Overall Iron Gate Hut is a superb and very warm new hut, and a rewarding destination for anyone keen on the outdoors.
