Ive told this story before, but im telling it again because the world needs to know🤟. I used to hang out and drink with these guys back in the late 70's early 80s. We all drank in the Ruskin Arms pub in East London and I must have seen them play there at least 30 times before they made the "big time ". They were all the most humble decent guys you could meet. I played football ⚽️ with Stevie Harris for a local amateur team (Melbourne FC) and trust me he was as good at that as he is on the bass!!!! We were all(and still are) West Ham Utd fans(apart fro Bruce!)....Stevie always has their badge on his bass and wears a West Ham wrist band!!! I met Bruce whist he was the singer with Sansom and it was obvious he would join Iron Maiden. Stevie still keeps in touch......and they are all STILL the most humble decent blokes you could meet. Up the Irons⚒️⚒️⚒️

Great stuff mate. My father is from Leyton, East London. Massive Hammers supporter even after he moved to Australia at 14. Rest of the family are Chelsea scum. I was amazed how he kinda knew the name Iron Maiden but not really his type of music apparently. I played him a few songs when I was 17 and he didn't actually mind it....told him "they're East London guys Dad". Maiden shirt on the next day.

'Fear of the Dark' came out in 1992 from the album of the same name... The song was not a single initially but it became a crowd favorite during Iron Maiden's 1992/ '93 tour... A live version of 'Fear of the Dark' ... was released as a single in '93 from the live record 'A real live one' and made an impact (The live version is more popular than the studio version) However, the album 'Fear of the Dark' also marked the end on an era for Iron Maiden... Their longtime producer Martin Birch announced that he was retiring from the music business... And then, the bombshell news went public in '93 that vocalist Bruce Dickinson was leaving Iron Maiden for a solo career... He performed his last concert in '93 as a Pay-per-view event filmed for the concert video 'Raising hell'. Making matters worse, Iron Maiden's UK label EMI records was downsizing operations and the next Iron Maiden album would not get the same promotion... Bassist Steve Harris went through a painful divorce... and the band had to seek a new lead singer and a new record label in America After extensive auditions, Iron Maiden hired singer Blaze Bayley in '94 and Steve Harris opted to produce the next Iron Maiden album... 'The X Factor' was released in 1995, the music was darker and not like past Maiden albums... Fans did not like singer Blaze Bayley and Iron Maiden were forced to tour in small venues because they were no longer popular in the 'alternative' 90's decade. Their next album 'Virtual XI' sold worse in 1998. Bruce Dickinson also had no luck as a solo artist between 1994 and 1998 - 4 albums sold poorly... Thankfully, he reconciled w/ Iron Maiden and rejoined the band in 1999 and producer Kevin Shirley started working w/ the band from 2000 onwards to ensure quality albums.

Interestingly I love the Blaze era albums, particularly the X factor, I love the real dark feel of the album. Blaze still has a successful solo career and like a fine wine he's singing has aged well, also the vinyl version of X factor is by far the best version to listen to.

@@oukie666 It's a good album (The X Factor) but it's dark and a very different Iron Maiden album. I've seen Blaze Bayley live and met him. He has a powerful vocal and I saw why Maiden hired him back in 1994.

And the drummer has a good sense of humor, about himself. Y'all should check out one of my favorite songs called "Rainmaker", on the "Dance of Death" album. It's very positive.

@@osamaqtaitat, First of all, yes I do know Iron Maiden well. I've been listening to the band for years. I went to the concert in Austin, in 2022, not that I have prove anything. What is Bruce's real first name? Who did Adrian Smith make an album with? What British show inspired Steve and Bruce to write two songs? Secondly, this is a Halloween song. Halloween songs don't have to have been made for Halloween. They just have to have the theme, hence it being on many people's Halloween playlists. It's just like scary movies are fit for Halloween, even though they weren't set on Halloween. I shouldn't have to explain this.

You may very well not have heard "Fear of the dark" before, since it's not one of their super-vintage tracks. It's the title track off their ninth studio album released in 1992, making it recent in comparison to the very early fans. However, and despite it not even being released as a single (though a live version got some traction on MTV the following year), "Fear of the dark" has gradually become one of the most popular songs in the Iron Maiden catalogue. As you would have noticed from that crowd, Iron Maiden have been insanely successful in rejuvenating their fanbase and getting discovered by ever new generations, and it's those new generations that have latched on to "Fear of the dark" to a crazy extent. In fact, it may be argued (and I for one AM arguing it) that "Fear of the dark" today would be considered Iron Maiden's signature song, an honor previously held by the 1982 hit single "Run to the the hills". Very much in the same way as the current signature song of AC/DC is not any of their late 70s/early 80s classics like "Highway to hell", "Back in black" or "You shook me all night long" - but the 1990 popular culture phenomenon "Thunderstruck". But sssssh, don't mention that to the purist fans of either band - they'd through the mother of all hissyfits!
