The song is based on a novel. It's about a kid who has been mistreated by authorities his entire life. He ends up in juvie hall where the governor also mistreats the kids in his care. The protagonist of the story/song gets favorable treatment because he's good at long distance running and the governor sees this as a road to rehabilitation. He trains like a madman since during training, people leave him alone. A race is set up between runners from the juvie hall and those from local schools where the governor intends to prove his theory of rehabilitation. The protagonist is yards away from winning the race with a huge lead. But he stops and stares at the governor, letting other runners pass him. It's the only way he has to get back at the authority figures who have mistreated him for so long.

One of the best songs for roadwork. I also don´t get into a runner´s high, unless I am on the treadmill and then I can get into insane flows where I sustain 190 bpm for 40 mins and I have to stop myself cause that shit can be dangerous. Body is completely wrecked afterwards, but the shower is pure bliss.

This came out in that weird period where a bunch of metal bands experimented with guitar synthesizers. The other big one was Judas Priest's Turbo. Both bands came their closest to being seen as hair metal bands as they both went with long coats in concert and puffy hair. They looked a lot different than they ever have before or since.

Run on and on.... Run on and on.... The loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is a metaphor. The song talks about running for your dreams. Keep running till you drop, meaning you never quit until you're dead. And in the end, when you're at the top of the mountain, you are at the top alone because there will be no more room at the top for anyone else...

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is a story about a young lad who is caught steeling as he is from the poorer side of town (Nottingham City, and actually my own local city as I live in good old Robin Hood's country 👍🏼) and is sent to borstal and put to run against the school's rival in a long distance running competition. He feels like "throwing the race" because why should he win for the institution who keeps him from his freedom? Great book and movie of the same name.
