The song "number of the beast" is a song that was written by Steve Harris (the bass player) about a dream. The line that the dream was mesmerizing is where he says "666 the number of the beast, 666 the one for you and me" so he mesmerized by the dream and it spoke to him saying that. Most of their songs are about dreams or historical facts. One of my favorite bands ever! Check out some newer live songs from their last tour they had great shows. Bruce is singing as good as ever and the band is still killing it.

and, yes, the guitarist often play the same riff simultaneously, though, typically of Maiden, they will be an octave apart, giving the song a signature depth of sound

The guy that came up at the beginning which you called "The Lead" was the bass not the lead guitar. There isn't really a conventional lead guitarist in Iron Maiden (unlike bands like Metallica), both guitarists play rhythm and lead sections, and there is obviously Steve Harris, their bassist.

The drummer here (Clive Burr) sadly passed away. This song initially proved an outcry in the US where they were branded devil worshippers and religious folks burned their albums in protest. Their songs are mostly historical or based on books but they are most definitely not devil worshippers, in fact the current drummer Nicko McBrain has a drum set with all the different incarnations of the bands mascot Eddie on but one main drum has a crucifix on as he's a devout Christian.

You mention the riff in the beginning. It is normal for all bands to have a signature sound. Like AC/DC, you know you will some heavy blues in their music. When Maiden hits the stage, the guitars are going to sound like a herd of galloping horses! Another funny thing you mentioned was the scream. In Bruce's book, he talked about that. He kept getting stopped mid verse while trying to record this song. The producer kept saying, "This is the FIRST time the Maiden fans are going to hear you. It has to be perfect"! He ended up getting really mad. They screamed at each other, threw furniture, etc. When he finally got it laid down, the producer said, "You think you can come up with a yell to finish that verse"? He was like, "Oh yeah. I got something"........... The rest is Metal history! :)

Some bass players use a guitar pick when playing which can give a brighter sound. Mr. Harris uses 3 fingers to play and it gives a fuller sound that is very under rated. I love it and he does not get near enough credit for his playing style. His playing is almost like a 3rd lead guitar player.

The guitarists Dave Murray and Adrian Smith are one of the greatest guitar ‘tag teams’ in metal along with KK Downing and Glenn Tipton from Judas Priest. They do have ‘battles’ on their guitars but they aren’t impromptu, they’re very close to the album. The difference with Iron Maiden is that Steve Harris jumps in with his bass and plays lead as well which is unusual for metal.

This is the classic Number of the beast line up, Drummer Clive Burr was replaced after this with current drummer Nikko McBrain. At 3:19 on your video it shows band leader and Bass player/ lyric writer Steve Harris, its easier to tell the bass from other guitars because normally it has just four strings ( there are exceptions )and it`s quite a bit bigger. There were two Guitarists at this time, at 6:09 Dave Murray starts his solo, at 6:37 Adrian Smith does his thing in a classic dual although the don't show him playing ( he`s the one with a red guitar-Ibanez Destroyer for the guitar players amongst you )
@philmus14 жыл бұрын
At this time Maiden had two guitarists (Dave Murray and Adrian Smith). They often doubled parts. Bassist Steve Harris also often plays in the guitar range. The band now has three lead guitarists with the addition of Yannick Gers. This means lead and rhythm parts can be doubled to give a beefier sound. Having three lead guitarists and a bass player playing the same octaves as them is a nightmare for live sound engineers!

Great reaction. Solos were as they were played on the album. Iron Maiden has so much going on in their music that they don't do improvisation much. They need to stay well timed. Deep Purple did do a lot of improvisation and there were duels between guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and Keyboardist Jon Lord during their live performances. Suggest the 1980 or 81 live version of Phantom of the Opera from their debut album. The 1980 version is the original lineup from lineup on a smaller stage. The 1981 version brought in Adrian Smith on guitar replacing Dennis Stratton. Paul Di'Anno features on both performances. Bruce Dickinson replaced Di'Anno and there are several versions with Bruce singing Phantom of the Opera. Not to be confused with Andrew Lloyd Weber version. For this competely different version I would recommend Nightwish. I prefer the version with Tarja over the version with Floor.
