A break in the wire is the most common problem with any handheld tool. It's because the wire keeps bending. After a while, it breaks the copper strands inside the sheathing and as a result, you have a dead iron, blowdryer, drill, or whatever it is.

I did this fix to my Rowenta iron about 5 years ago. My mom just mentioned that she just bought a new iron to replace her malfunctioning Rowenta iron. I asked if it goes on and off when you move the cord. Yup. Gonna fix hers tomorrow. Thanks for the refresher.

I appreciate your letting us see warts and all from beginning to end--the struggle with taking off the back of the iron, getting the cording back in....More realistic and so more doable by the average Joe--and Josette. Hands were out of camera range at one point, but you figured that out and compensated. Thanks.

Thanks! My wife quilts and is on her 4th Rowenta, each lasting about 4-5 years. I always suspected the problem was the control dial was getting dirty since it seemed erratic. I thought a broken cord would just fail and not be intermittent, particularly when it did so inside of the cord capture. Found this exact break point! I ended up shaving a small amount off of the sharp edges on the cord capture.

Thank you VERY much for posting this video. I just replaced the cord on my Rowenta Steamium iron. The problem was at the plug end of the cord so I bought a new cord at the hardware store and, following your awesome instructions, installed it.

Thank you. It was worth buying the torx T20 and doing the repair myself. The pinch point on the wire is a poor design. I didn't tighten the wire down 100% to lessen the pressure and hopefully prevent the issue from happening again.

Have the same iron with the EXACT problem. Handy to have a T20 Torx bit and couple of small wire nuts to finish the job. One additional thing I did is trim back a little on the notch on the wire clamp to minimize the wire kink. Hope this will make the wire last a little longer then normal. Thanks for posting this DIY video.

Great video. My Rowenta is not exactly like the one shown (I think ours is an older model); however, it is somewhat similar. I didn't try to locate the broken wire section; I just cut out the ~ 6 inches of 'probably broken cord' & re-spliced it in to the iron. WORKS GREAT! Now she is deciding whether to return the "new Rowenta" that we ordered as a replacement.

Thank you Adam, I fixed the iron. I made one change, instead of using couplers, I used Liquid Electrical Tape to join the wires. This was good as the space inside is very tight. I then used electrical tape just to make sure it was safe.

Quick comment on a great repair video... most hand held appliances use 'polarized' plugs meaning one wire is designed to carry the voltage, the other is effectively a 'ground'. So, BEFORE cutting the wires, make a long mark along one of the wires with a sharpie so you connect the the wires back so the 'ground' wire stays ground. It is very easy to get them confused and cross the voltage wire to what is designed to be the 'ground' wire - which is VERY dangerous for hand help appliances. Again, great repair video - just a note of caution on the polarized power cord.

Key question - why did you cut the old cord and make a new join with the replacement instead of disconnecting the old cord completely at the pre-existing join with the heating element, connecting the new wire there?

I just fixed my DW8080. I noticed that the actual point of contact on the strain relief is hinged, and comes to a point, which is exactly where the pinch point is located. I filed the point down just a LITTLE BIT to dull the point and lessen the pressure on the wire strands (I hope). The cord still doesn't come out, so it isn't a safety concern.

It's a good repair, however, you haven't addressed the root cause of the problem. The reason it broke is the crappy design that pinches the wires in the clamp as a strain relief mechanism. A couple of years down the road you'll be doing the same thing when it breaks again. For a longer-term fix, trim back the piece of the clamp that presses on the wires, and tie an underwriter's knot just under the pivot ball. That will prevent the cord from pulling out, and won't cause another breakage over time.

Great video. It seems my Rowenta Focus DZ5080 has the same problem. I am going to follow the steps you took in this video and try and repair it. I did notice that the major problem is that the wire is pinched inside by the white plastic piece that clamps it together. And this piece is sharp and is very tight, therefore pinching the wire and resulting in this problem. In the video after you repaired the wire you put it back in the same plastic clamp, and it looks like this problem can occur again in the future. Is there a way to avoid securing it with the white plastic piece?
@AdamDIY
@AdamDIY 10 жыл бұрын
I assume you are talking about the clamp that I am screwing together at 6:19 The clamp stops you from pulling the cord and having the connection split apart. Many hand tools and other small appliances have some sort of design that grips the plug. Chances are that it is not going to break the wires in the clamped area but further towards the plug. It's a safety thing, so I would just use the same clamp rather than try to find a new way around it.

Less than 10 minute repair saved my Rowenta DW5080 Focus from 2018 that was actually still made in Germany including the stainless steel sole (I don't believe today's models are). It's not even about the money, I can afford a new iron, it's about keeping otherwise good quality and about fixing things in a society that's all too used to disposing things.
