This is a dope conversation. Part of the reason the battle rap culture got away from "freestyling" is...us fans wanted too much. We crave more structure, more metaphors, more schemes etc. So it forced battle rappers to write rounds. Makes for better quality battles but it lost the essence of what battle rap was during Mook's and Iron's prime.

+Enigmatic Beats Exactly my thoughts !! I feel like most street battle rappers used writtens in freestyle battles. But out here in L.A Freestyling off the top was the only thing considered to be skill 10 yrs ago and prior. If you sounded structured or came with writtens it was considered wack. Which is why I never really developed my off the top freestyle skills because I wasn't really good at it. But nowawdays if you go into a written battle with Freestyles off the top its considered wack. How time and strategies change. It has changed for the better but like romediddy said, the essence was lost. Never will it be the same again.

+r0mediddy I was never a top tier guy. I never battled a top tier guy but in the early-mid 2000's I used to street battle all the time and we wrote our shit. We didn't take it too seriously like these guys so none of us really had a problem admitting it. We just wanted to put on a good show. It wasn't that we sat down and wrote whole songs but we'd think up a trash line, what would sound cool with it and depending on who we were battling, if it fit, we used it. It was like we had a bank of bars to use. I don't really see anything wrong with that personally. We still had to think, on the fly, when and how to say what and to whom. It was fun so when I hear complaints about stuff being written I just laugh because really, why does it matter? Break dancers practice that shit. How is this very different?

KOTD fans hear wordplay and automatically give it a pass whether it's corny or not. If Iron was on Smack he'd be bottom-mid-tier, most of the PGs have crazier pens than him right now. Illmac doesn't "bar out" as much but his writing is on a higher level, period

Desacration u are correct these new kids act like the evented toilet paper lol. Battling rather it be todays format or the original freestyle format that cats like myself were into back in the day when I spit has been around for years. Hell way before there was a scribble jam or a smack dvd people use too battle on the local street corners or at the school lunch tables. Hell back in 76 or 77 battling wasn't even about raps people would battle too see who the louder boombox. Dont believe me ask bamabata and grandmaster caz they battled with boomboxes not bars. The first actual lyrical battle was on dec 31st 1981 three years before I was born when busy bee vs kool moe dee happened. Busy was a old school party rapper and moe dee was the blueprint for whut we know as lyricist in today's era. Moe dee shut shit down that night but the moral of the story is if moe dee doesn't spit those battle bars vs busy bee there would be no emcees or battle rappers dudes would sound like tech 9 not the industry rapper but the battle rapper from philly. Bars would not exist there would be no battles on your local block or high school lunch table think about that. There would be no illmac,math,myers,daylyt,lux,pat stay,hollow,clips,mook or even guys like kool g rap,nas,jay z,biggie, tupac,pun,krs,rakim,kane etc.. u get the idea hip hop in general would be super different could u imagine a world where your fav battle emcee spit non direct party raps too win? lol that shit would be crazy

+Artform Emcee The boombox battles you mentioned are the Sound vs Sound systems. To see who had the best sound system for everybody to hear. Battling off the top of the dome has been around Romeo and Juliet by Shakespear. Romeo's cousin ( Mercutio is his name if I'm not incorrect ) used to have what they called in the novel " battle of wits " where they would trade word for word, personal disses to each other. One said something clever about the other and then the other individual would respond with something more clever. This has been around for ages. Just not in the format that it is today. Its all well structured now. Which is a good thing for any great writers. But you are right ! Moe Dee was the one to go lyrical with it. Which turned it into what it is now. Salaam !
