After a winter with relatively little snow, the crocuses are already blooming on the slopes above the Albula Valley in mid-April. When a cold front pulls through at this time and a load of fresh snow falls on the green meadows overnight, there is only a short time window for a (final?) skltour in the backyard before the clouds clear and the afternoon sun relentlessly melts away the white splendor within hours .
In this video - one day after the bike tour in the last KZbin short ( • Biking in the Snow in ... ) - we ascend past the huts of Pardela to the Schmittner Alp and reach a scenic viewpoint on a grass hill named "Hubel" higher above just as the sun starts to emerge from the clouds. Here at 2200m we experience an alpine atmosphere with strong wind gusts and snowdrifts. Under these circumstances, proceeding to the summit of the Tiaun, which towers high above the Hubel, is out of the question from the outset due to the considerable risk of avalanches. However on the Hubel alone, the wonderful interplay between clouds, the last snowflakes and the sun is reward enough for the ascent.
The ski descent from Hubel was not entirely safe in these conditions. Even at this altitude, the sun has already soaked the loose fresh snow within a very short time. Since it fell on green meadows, there is no longer any base to protect against the boulders, roots and other invisible obstacles that are now hidden under the snow. However, close to the ascent track and with a few memories from snow-free times, it was possible to avoid the greatest dangers. Further down, where the snow has softened even more, there was definitely only one way back on the ascent track to the Schmittner Alp. From Pardela on it was necessary to walk home (not shown in this video). Nevertheless, this was a worthwhile excursion and an impressive landscape experience!
