This was supposed to be a relatively quick trip to make a straightforward bowl while my family was on a trip. A woodturner's dream right? Well, this rock hard yet fragile chunk of willow wood had other plans.
Being sold at ArtForOUR.org (www.artforour.org/our/p/willow-bowl-12-x-9-inch-handmade-willow-wood-bowl) to raise money for Operation Underground Railroad, fighting child sex trafficking around the world.
We need your help! Buy or Donate your art at ArtForOUR.org to help us raise funds for O.U.R. You can choose how much of your proceeds are donated. Here are my commonly used tools/equipment if you'd like to try them out....even if you can't find what you need, any purchases in Amazon using these links helps us raise money for O.U.R.
- Lathe: (amzn.to/3orYsOy) this Laguna lathe is freaking amazing, very well built, solid, strong, variable speed, 110 or 220 volt. I couldn't have designed it better. This Wen lathe was my first trusty starter lathe, great place to start this hobby: amzn.to/3aqIIGH
- Lathe tools: (amzn.to/3agd3ay) carbide tip, (amzn.to/3t5iMsA) great beginner set
- File Sander: (amzn.to/36o3hlE), this is the cheapest and highest quality I've found. Fantastic for those hard to get to sanding projects.
- Carving tool: (amzn.to/2MjTd6x), Rotozips are awesome, a little too powerful for small detail but great for roughing out the medium sized projects.
- Angle Grinder: (amzn.to/36lgewG), one of my most indispensable tools, (amzn.to/3iXtNHW) the flat head helps get into tight spaces, carving and sanding disks are a life saver.
- Grinder Carving Disk: (amzn.to/39oWqKG), this is a really great disk for roughing out medium sized projects
- Grinder Sanding Disks: (amzn.to/3cj91Rv), fantastic for sanding and minor-moderate shaping stages
- Round Sanding System: (amzn.to/3r11N8Q) sleeves go around an inflatable ball (amzn.to/2KVCUvW )or make your own foam ball, attaches to a drill, great for tight corners.
- Palm Sander: (amzn.to/3r1mJg8), the most important sanding tool, used on almost every job. I like the size of the sand paper for both this and on the lathe by hand.
- Chain Saw: (amzn.to/2MbWNj2), has worked well for years, I also bought this electric one (amzn.to/3qZOqpp) for the quieter in the garage projects
- Oscillating Tool: (amzn.to/3puK4q1) great for cutting and sanding sharp corners and tight spots.
- Super Glue: (amzn.to/3pFg5vT) thin and runny, perfect for stabilizing bark or other unstable wood.
- Resin: TotalBoat.com has been gracious enough to donate resin for my future projects, given them some love! You can get 15% off using my code: preece15
- Pigments: amzn.to/3sYC5ng, great quality for resin
- Pressure Pot: (amzn.to/3tfp1u2) 5 gallon for the big resin projects to get rid of bubbles, or (amzn.to/3pwX0M8) for the smaller average jobs 2.5 gallon, both need minor modifications to work.
- Protection: (amzn.to/39t3lm0), best face shield yet for carving and lathe work. Respirator: HIGHLY recommended for wood and resin work, speaking as a Dr, I'm telling you to protect those lungs: amzn.to/3tqYWbA and those ears: amzn.to/3qa9xW2

@Christine Ingram I was absolutely thinking the same thing, life brings us many obstacles to overcome, and people usually do one of two things, give up and toss the bowl, or turn it into something beautiful. I have had my fair share of obstacles, some of which include being struck by lightning and a having a near fatal bought of Bacterial Meningitis, but I feel like each experience has taught me to think outside the box for ways to persevere and allowed me to take the time to love and appreciate the beauty of imperfections in nature. Each crack tells the story of this tree's life, and Dan's artistry has now immortalised it's story in this beautiful piece!

I really appreciate you not using resin on this project. I’m still a new woodturner ( December 2020 ) but I watch allot of videos when I’m not turning. Yes resin makes some stuff look nice but I’ve noticed people using it as a crutch I guess you could say. If their turning goes to crap they bring out the resin. I don’t like the natural look of wood. Even if it’s not “perfect”. Your project looks beautiful to me & it detonated on you. You pulled yourself together & fixed it to look great again. That’s the sign of a true craftsman & woodturner in my mind. Again thank You from GrUmPy’S Wood Turning in New Market Tennessee. ....🇺🇸GrUmPy🇺🇸....

I have seen people wrapping their turns when working with something that chaotic. They wrap 'em & throw on a steady rest ... still no guarantees in turning, but it will at least reduce some of the carnage & help keep the pieces from being flung about the shop. Something as simple as duct tape & a Garbage bag can buy a little piece of mind & save you some time searching for pieces while you are hollowing. Looks beautiful regardless.

Heroic!! ... Beautiful result for the worthiest of causes! ... one thought for your embrace of aging wood is to do what your colleagues do for their aging patients ... tape 'em up! Many turners sand and finish coat the exterior before even starting the interior ... at that point, if worried about integrity, you could wrap the exterior with gaffers tape (super strong, stronger than duct tape or gorilla tape, and it leaves no residue} ... tape it up like a hockey stick! Wind it super tight; a round bowl can take it! Then hog out the inside, or even core it out with the One Way coring jig if the wood is as hard as that one was (better than the largest forstner bit), all while taped tight on the outside with gaffers tape ... just a thought ... Nice work, and now the criticism. 1- Not using a live center on a piece with a makeshift tenon is a failure in the making, especially with no live center. 2- You probable had the explosion because you were using a pull-cut from the bottom of the bowl; doing so exerts force on an already unstable rim. Use a push-cut from the edge of the rim - less stress on the wood. 3- Even if you're sitting on the end of the lathe, ricochets happen. 4- You may need the Death & Dismemberment insurance I sell. Seriously, I like your perseverance and your cause. The organic feel of a piece that's not perfectly smooth all over is very attractive.

This looks great, but I think it would've been a perfect candidate for casting in resin. It would've made it stronger, and still emphasized the beautiful cracks. A translucent black resin would've been amazing with this piece. It's still beautiful, though.

That piece was obviously too unstable to turn. I also enjoy working from natural, "flawed" stock, but people, do not turn something this unstable. The observation that things tend to fly off in the plane of the rotation is not protection against injury.

There are two videos that show bad blowups while turning wood; yours and The Wood Whirler ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/jne6qX-lirqbldk ). However, I think the Wood Whirler’s blowup took out a lot of his shop. Take a view of the link. I had a father figure who looked out after me as a child all the way into my teens. He was an expert Wood worker, pecan farmer and a great teacher who taught me many things about wood and life. When I returned to my home in Southern New Mexico, I stopped by his farm that he still ran at 93 years of age. He was tough as boot leather. His wife pointed me to his workshop where he was working on a project. When I entered the shop I found him on the floor in a bloody mess. A piece of mesquite broke off a turning and impaled him through the neck. It went the rough the face shield. He had been dead for about 30 minutes when I found him. The coroner said there was no way for him to have survived. Why am I telling you this? It’s those accidents like what you experienced that can be disastrous in more than one way. Turn safely, friend!

You are correct, I do mean well. But some of your techniques are in need of change. Starting and stopping your lathe with the speed control is a very poor practice. The red button is the only thing short of unplugging it, is the only sure way to do it safely. Having to force your check onto the spindle with pliers is another problem in the making. And lastly and most importantly failing to keep the tailback in place as long as possible can only spell doom at some point. Watch some of the other folks' videos and learn to turn safely. Good luck!
