Yeah, I hydro locked one of the 454 Crusader engines on my boat in 2001 and did the same kind of damage, through a stupid mistake on my part (Long explanation, but totally avoidable). So, if you boat long enough, stuff like that happens. I dropped about $10,000 because it ended up being easier to just replace the engine than to fix it for me. That's always the question. Do you repair it (and doing the work yourself is definitely possible and will be cheaper) or do you lay out the extra coin and just get a new engine for a lot of bucks? But, it's all part of the Great Adventure! Good luck! It will be a funny story twenty years from now.

1) you got a good response from the marina because you were good at communicating the situation. In fact, you have been good at that all through this whole thing. 2) EVERYONE has an issue like this with the engine, eventually. Lucky for you, it happened with land in sight and the weather was not a total disaster. I don't know about British engines, but one thing I have heard is about how letting them sit is a bad idea. I know the temptation is to enjoy not turning it on for a few weeks because sail is more fun and "we sure saved a lot of fuel!" .... but you really have to turn it over and run it up every few days. 3) NEST EGG. For things like this (and a bazzilion other possibilities) you need a cash reserve that you can access from anywhere, preferably in the 5 figure range. I knwo it sounds painful, but once you hit 100k subscribers you should be able to swing that, and I predict you will be there by July. Better not be sooner, I'm going to be in the Canadian Rockies in June and I do NOT want to miss that day!

I was hoping it was just a bad injector but my long experience with diesel engines told me the knock was too loud for just an injector. Personally I’d embrace the suck and do a complete rebuild and not try to just patch the motor. Those are really simple engines and with your mechanic friends to guide you you would be fine DIY. Having a completely rebuilt engine would put you at ease when you cross the pacific. The parts for a complete rebuild are not terribly expensive. It’s the labor that’s a killer. DIY would cut the costs considerably. Thanks for bringing us along.

I hope you see this comment and it finds you in time. When doing valve work it's both important and easy to stuff paper towels and rags in the cylinders and below the working area. Dropping one screw can lead to a full day of extra work. I mostly work on motorcycles and it's a hardship in that environment. I can't imagine what kind of temper tantrum I'd throw if I knew I was going to spend a day doing painful boat yoga because I didn't spend a few seconds putting rags in the holes I should have plugged.

Quick comment regarding the snake plant (my mother always called it "Mother-in-law's Tongue", but there are several names)... They are dry environment plants, so like all cacti, bromeliads, and the like, they require very little water (mine go months at times between waterings), so as you found out, too much water will kill them quickly, rotting the roots, and ultimately the leaves. Instead of cutting them off and putting the leaves directly in water, let the leaves "scab over" for 48 hours or more first, then push the ends into mostly dry soil, watering sparingly every week or two, until they root and grown. They will take off, if not over-watered. The pothos (the long, gangly plant that grows everywhere and anywhere) should be good with much more water, but even if you forget, you'll just loose a few leaves, and it will still survive. Good luck! Love your videos...

A basic mechanics course will help you guys out so much, for a rocker to jump off the push rod like that means that the adjustment has come loose and the valve clearance gap is wrong. Love your channel because you guys are authentic, genuine, awesome, caring humans. We’ve all done something daft in our boats. I know I have. Try grounding on a lee shore at 2am on a deserted peninsula in The Gulf, heeled over, without radio and no prospect of assistance. We packed our bags, drank whisky (what else would one do?) and discussed our predicament … until dawn. Despite everything, morale was high. Ready to face a long desert walk, we were about to disembark into the shallows, but the tidal height increased just a tad …. and we were hugely fortunate to find a somewhat sketchy way through the reef and past multiple coral heads in the morning. It was a terrifying situation, but the dice rolled in our favour. As they have for you! 🎉

I was disappointed when you guys did not respond to my lengthy post during the last episode when I said the engine was "hydro locking."I did say it had nothing to do with AIR or FUEL. I went on to explain the principle of how a diesel engine works and how different the combustion process is in a diesel compared to a gasoline engine. I was trying to help you so you would not do further damage to your engine. Every time you crossed your fingers hoping the engine would start, I had my fingers crossed that it wouldn't. You have over 80,000 people subscribed to your channel. We love you and care for you. That is why we watch you. You would be surprised just how many people are on this channel at any given episode and how much knowledge is available to you. ASK and you shall receive. There are people on this channel who have been there and done that and made the mistakes you have made and the future mistakes you will make. Take advantage of the knowledge of others available to you. I would speculate that there are people in here who know your boat better than you do , certainly better than I. Our collective knowledge or our personal experiences with similar events can make your travels safer and less stressful. Good luck with the repairs. I hope you end up with a shop and a technician that will do a bang up job and treat you right.

It’s almost certainly not a hydro-lock, the engine started and hydro-locked an engine won’t crank. Also, this was weeks ago… given who these two are I’d lay decent money it’s already fixed.
@aytacercen9448 ай бұрын
If you noticed their engine would not crank either. Best they could get out of the freshly charged battery and a starter in good condition was half a turn or a full turn. Not enough to get it started. When the engine not running, what fuel and water has accumulated in the cylinder would go past the piston rings thus evacuating the cylinder because oil rings are gapped for OIL. Not water.. Next time they try to start it, the engine would start because there was no more fuel or water in the cylinder. I was under the impression. in this episode that was the diagnosis of the gentleman Teulu tribe checks with.. If not hydro lock, what do you think happened? I am always willing to learn.

A hydrolocked engine will not turn over. Three things about a dropped push rod. The first is adjustment, second is a bend, third is a lifter. In that brief close up of the push rods it looks like the problem push rod tappet is backed off quite a bit, compare it with it's mates on the other cylinders.. The valves are on the far side. The push rods are on the near side. Once you get the rocker arm assembly off, all the tops of the valves will be at the same height unless one is bent, quick test with a straight edge. The push rods will all be at different heights. Lift the problem push rod out and see if it's bent. Sometimes the intake and exhaust push rods are different lengths, compare your problem hole's push rods to each other for length. Another thing that can fail and cause the push rod to drop out is if the hydraulic lifter that rides on the cam has collapsed. A light tap on the end of each push rod will give you some sound feedback on whether the problem might be a collapsed lifter. The working lifter will give back a duller thump than the lifter that has gone all metal on metal. The only drawback there if if your engine uses solid lifters.

Not sure what type of engine you have other than a 4 cylinder diesel, but as a marine engineer of some 45 years of experience, I always carried at least one and usually two spare injectors (MBG can erode the nozzles of the injectors) and depending on where I was going, I brought a power pack just in case I blew a cylinder (a power pack is piston, con-rod, rings and bearings). Depending on how world wide the service is for your engine (I had a Yanmar and a Perkins which were pretty good) you can generally find someone to do or at least help you along with the labour, but if you don't have the parts, you can find yourself stranded. Oh, and there were more than a few times I was left resting on my keel when the tide went out and the marina's depth "estimate" was a tad off. You guys are doing great - learning is part of the adventure.

I threw a rod on a 6.2L Diesel so I feel your pain. The pistons had been bored .070 over spec by a previous owner so it was going to happen. I think the block cracked first. Some Advice: I really hope you have a full set of technical services manuals for that engine now. You really should have bought those prior to sailing so far. Technical Service Manuals walk you through every process of maintaining or rebuilding a diesel engine. Get a physical set and a PDF set. If the Tech Service Manuals are expensive, look in some marine service tech online forums to find out which volumes among the set are the most useful and buy only those books. You can refer to the PDF Version for the other info. Learn the sound of a well running diesel. So you know when she needs attention. When you hear an off-sounding-ticking put the tip of a screw driver to the top of the valve cover. Then lay your ear on top of the handle. Listen to every two inches of the full length of the valve cover. Before pulling the covers off for further inspection, if needed. You can also listen to the valve cover bolt heads. Tappet clearance settin should be performed per manual, first. Easier methods can be applied once you gain experience and learn your engine's running habits and maintenance sheduals. Try the listening technic after the rebuild so you know how the rockers sound when tappets are adjusted properly. You can also listen to various parts of the block this way too. I even use a doctor's stethoscope to reach difficult areas of the block. I bought a cheap one at a pharmacy. They make specific diagnostic tools for this part you may not fit one in a boat's working space. Diesel engines are loud when using a stethoscope. To avoid ear damage, only place one ear piece in your ear then pull it away slightly and hold it there. You can move the ear piece closer as you need too. Don't be afraid of injectors. Learn how to remove and clean them. You may need that knowledge and experience. Keep the physical manuals on the boat. The PDF file on several devices. Everyone was taught in a different style. They may all work but the manuals were writen by the manufacture for diesel service mechanics to properly work on the engine per manufacturer specification. All other advice people give you, including my own, should be weighed against what the manual says. In some cases you will find the manual was wrong or a specific component was recalled or replaced in later models. Learning how to decipher your engine block codes will help with this. Enjoy your day.

My only bit of advice is this! When you go back to put the rocker arm, as I call it! The rod that the rockers sit on! Just make sure you put the arm back correctly, as one side has oil going back into to lubricate it and the opposite side/end does not! With one engine on my dad's boat, the previous owner did not put it back the right way around and stopped oil going down the whole length of it and it was not expensive, but not pleasant! Take care both! I hope that is clear! I am doing this from memory back in 1979 ok 🥴

I've been a mechanic for 30 years they do make injector sockets should get one you will need to remove injectors eventually also you can do cylinder compression and leak down tests with threaded fitting and compression and leak down testers.

The engine problem is a pain and some work to fix. I've made many mistakes and I think the worst part is continuing feeling stressed about it, days, weeks, later, so make sure you get relaxed again, and focus on the things you can do. That in itself is so important. I know sailing couples who have both taken courses in many aspects of boat systems, maintenance and repair, in addition to all the sailing, navigation, knowledge. So not only can they both understand the issues, they can discuss them.

Dont forget that you have a 2nd back up engine on the tender, you can launch the tender and tow yourselves if you slip anchor and need to. Its not ideal but better than nothing and you can pre-empt dangerous channels by towing the tender when needed just incase.

Becca, if you don’t have rainex, you can cut a raw potato in two & rub that on the glass, it works the same way, just not as long. I’ve always thought Aloe would be a great plant to have on a boat because it’s good for so many things besides cuts. You can even bandage with it and many people even eat it. (It was $3 for each leaf at the grocery store) It doesn’t need much watering either. I hope all the mechanical and fuel problems are fixed now and you feel like the both the Boat & you guy’s are safe & can breathe again. I remember when this adventure started, you’ve came so far, learned so many new things and you have GOOD friends everywhere you go now that you can depend on…..Life is Good! 🍀

These things happen, that is how you accumulate experience. What you should have is a backups. 1. Sailing skills at a level where you can sail onto a mooring or into a marina (practice in a dinghy first). 2. A backup outboard engine with enough power to tow the yacht in a calm. Use the tender as a tow boat or towing alongside (position tender so prop of outboard mother is as far back as possible).

That was a great explanation of the mechanics of the engine head and the damage done, despite being flustered. I've killed multiple engines in my vehicles before and it sucks a lot, I'm with you there. It's easy to get bogged down personifying your boat and feeling like you did some moral wrong in harming it. You don't need to put that burden on yourself. It's a machine, albeit a beautiful machine, and you guys will be able to fix it!

Thanks so much. No idea if any of it made sense 🤣 I think Teulu would just seem a boat, if we hadn’t been through the weather or the hard times with her. But you are right, it’s just an engine and just needs to be fixed

Hi. To put back the rockers you will need a feeler gauge and a torque wrench, by looks the one rocker will need changing and a new and a rocker bolt . Make sure you do not over tighten the rocker carriage or under tighten it down , maker sure the correct gap for the tappets as well ( feeler gauge ) Wish You Well. Ps. If you have water in bore , take out injector , turn engine over back to TDC ( top dead centre ) While that particular piston at top (. Very carefully, cotton rag should soak up last bit , then Remove !! ).

Have you considered a 10 or 15HP external motor you can slide into a mount, or slide above the waterline as an emergency backup plan? I've seen folks store them in boat storage as well. They weight about 80 lbs but if you can manage, it's worth its weight in gold.

The old mariners used to put some wax on the bottom of a lead weight and drop it to the bottom. The sand/mud whatever that sticks can tell you a lot.

There's usually not a problem sitting on the bottom or floating above it. The problem arises when there is 1.85m of water under your 1.85 m draft. Any wave motion bounces you up and down on the bottom, potentially causing problems at the keel/hull joint. This is sometimes evidenced on bilge keelers that many think are supposed to take to the bottom in a drying harbour for example but at that critical point are picked up and dropped onto the firm stuff. I'm sure you'll be fine, I'm just posting for your information.

You are understanding the workings of a combustion engine. The camshaft turns, like you said, and in turn controls the movement, opening and closing. Looks as though it could be a bent con rod. Don't panic about anything, whether you cry or laugh about the situation, the situation is the same and the outcome will come good in the end. Injectors are pretty straightforward to remove unless one gets corroded, then it's a bugger to remove

When the gap between the push rod and the rocker lever is that big and the push rod is not bent and the counter lock is not loose , there can be the valve bent or there is massiv abrasion of the cam shaft . Both is no irreversible damage , but it is some hours work and maybe some hundred pounds !
@TeuluTribe8 ай бұрын
The chunk out of the rocker is slightly irrevesible but all can be replaced! luckily 😊

What I did when I hydrolocked my diesel engine in my car when I drove through a Ford. It’s absolutely imperative that you shut the engine down as soon as possible and don’t try to restart it. Instead of removing the injectors, I removed the glow plugs which was a lot easier. Once they were removed it was safe to crank the engine over and let the compression blow out any water. Once I had done that I rep,aced the glow plugs and she started first time, On an earlier occasion I hydrolocked another car in a flood and I tried starting it which I succeeded in doing but in turn the engine was f****d probably bent a con rod. It ran but rough as a bears arse. I learnt the hard way.
