This area of the IRT while very frequent with high on time performance could use some improvements The 149th Street junction is where the 2 and 5 trains meet; 5 trains must negotiate a wicked S-curve between the 138th Street and 149th Street - Grand Concourse stations. The sharpness of the curve restricts the 5 train’s speed, which causes reduces capacity. So what’s I’m proposing is a new alignment would remedy the bottleneck, The 5 train merge would be rebuilt so it would occur between Grand Concourse and 3rd Ave stations so that the straighter curve of the tunnel would allow for much faster/smoother merges. Service on the White Plains Rd Line (2/5 trains) and on the Jerome Avenue (4 train) would be sped up. The down side is that the 5 train no longer stops at 149th street grand Concourse but that’s fine cause 90% of riders are heading down to Manhattan so it shouldn’t be a problem. The current 149th street junction would still be used for emergencies. Another minor change to remove the small bottleneck at 180th street to expand capacity on the White Plains Road line I would make is either have the 2 train the peak way express service and have the 5 train run local or have the 2 and 5 trains switch terminals The 2 train would take over the Dyre Avenue line The 5 train would take over the Wakefield line. Select rush hour 2 trains would head to Nereid Avenue like the 5 train currently does that way riders still have access to the west side of Manhattan keeping white plains road. Reasoning for this switch, The White Plains Road branch is about 4.5 miles long with 10 stations, while the Dyre Avenue branch is about 4 miles long with 5 stations. I believe that the peak way express service would be more efficient on the train line with the longer route and the interface at 180 street the wakefield tracks leads directly to the express track and the dyre Avenue tracks leads directly to the local tracks An additional benefit is When the 5 runs express south of East 180th Street, it no longer has to cross over the local tracks to reach the center track. And finally study the implication of CBTC for Bronx IRT.
