Is 25hp Enough to Pull a Square Baler

Trying a square baler with the 3025D. It did not have a problem pulling this. The PTO speed stayed up. This thing keeps surprising me. Who knows what I will find to try next. The hay bales will be used to make a make shift blind since it was wet when I baled these.

I know it's been a little while since you posted this but, here is why you can run it with no problem...The flywheel on the front of the baler produces 40 hp if spun at 540 RPM thats the way it was designed. When these balers first came out you could get one with a 16hp wisconsin engine mounted on the front of them and belted to the flywheel much like the kicker and that was all the power they needed after they got the flywheel spinning mass turned into HP and they run fine. That is why all you have to do is spin it at 540 rpm the baler does the actual bailing. Now the frame size of the tractor makes a difference if you run it on a hill. the plunger going back and fourth will actually scoot the tractor if it is not big enough on a hill. Not good going down hill!!!.....The speed the tractor is traveling also makes a lot of difference in the bale quality and the overall operation of the baler...Ive baled many a square bale with my 25hp new holland and my 1962 new holland 269 baler and it works fine.......hope to see you get more videos up....PS you will have more trouble pulling a haybine than that baler because a haybine does not have a flywheel to generate the proper hp. Go with a good sickle mower with double action and you will be set to do your own hay....

Thanks for the information. I did just pick up a sickle bar. I haven’t said anything about it because of other projects going on. It needs some attention where it has been sitting.

@@rsmstuff3178 Thats great i just watched the haybine video, i didn't realize you ran one already when i made the first comment. but the sickle will do better. Hope it's a sickle where the bar and the blades move or you will not be as happy with it. But if its just a regular sickle and dialed in it will work fine and be easy for your tractor to run.

Yes it was a big hole. Just glad I caught it on video. I will keep trying to come up with new things to try as money becomes available.

if you run a jd B with a baler, you can run the 3025D with the baler,I like my 3025D, good investment .I just wish it had live PTO.

I know the 25 hp can bale, iv seen tractor time with tim use a small square baler on his 1025r and it did it. When I start making hay with a 3025e I think I'm going to bit the bullet and get a 25 horse gas motor to run the baler independently to save wear and tear on the tractor.... just cause it can do it I think long term youd wear it out alot faster.

I can see your point on that. I have thought about finding a wide front for my JD B and use it some for the same thing. It just seems like time gets away from me. I would hate to have the tricycle front fall into one of the cow holes.

Small HP tractors baled hay for years with no problems. They are designed to do that. My grandfather used a 601 work master for years. It had a little more Hp than the 3025, but not a lot. He cut and raked with 8N Fords. I think the 8N has less hp that the 3025.

@@c.carney1948 yeah but it is sad to say that an old 25 horse tractor and an new 25 horse tractor are built different. Old tractors are over built and that's why they are still going strong. A new 3025e I'd be scared to bale alot because I do think every time the plunger hits that will tax the tractors internals over time wearing them out.

Should be no problem. Ford 8n's have pulled these with kicker wagons for decades. Good test would be a mower conditioner in heavy hay. thats a much heaver piece of equipment and will work the tractor more.

35 years ago i spent weeks wailing hay with a 28 hp tractor the rocking from the plunger is almost enough to put a 10 year old kid to sleep.

I bet it is because you have a gear driven drivetrain instead of hydrostatic. Those hydrostatic systems are not made for kids and don’t have the torque to the wheels of a gear system. Does yours have 25HP at the crankshaft or at the PTO? Asking because I am curious if my old JD870 with 25HP at the PTO has the guts too.

3025d is a fraction less that 25hp at the crank per John Deere.

I think the 3025d is probably one of the finest tractors JD make in that power range, it also doesn’t have any dpf to go wrong. I will be buy one to replace my current tractor.

My new Holland 270 requires 14 PTO to run the baler and another 12 to pull it. 4wd will really help it. I once ran a 271 with a JD 790 once all day. You have the newer version of that tractor.

You run the motor to the desired setting to get 540 rpm of the the pro. No more and no less.

If I remember correctly it was. I did scrap those bales. If my memory serves me right I think rain was coming and I didn’t have a way to flip it later. Just wanted to see if it would do it.
