As someone who has been using an i7-4770k since 2014, I can safely say I will upgrade, but I'm amazed at what my CPU can still do after all these years. [EDIT], It's been a year since I posted this, but I have finally reached the point where I need to upgrade. Act 3 of Baldur's Gate 3 runs at just 17fps for me. Sadly, my i7-4770k is starting to show its age. (I have a GTX 1080, BG3 is more CPU intensive than GPU)

at the start of 2021 i upgraded my old 6600k to a 5600X. Yeah, technically it was still able to game and everything, but nothing beyond that. It was tedious trying to watch a stream or videos, while playing, on a second monitor because it kept buffering or straight up black out. Yes they can and do work but if you play anything thats a couple years newer than the cpu itself it really starts showing its limitations.

I had bought a 4790k brand-new back then and used it all the way up until around 2019 when I started to get some mobo/cpu problems (possibly due to my long-term OC.) I wasn't able to quite figure it out and I didn't have the chance to test it in a new mobo, but I ended up upgrading to a Ryzen 3700x. Aside from the degradation, the CPU was plenty powerful to handle the majority of my tasks: compiling, gaming, light video work, etc. I get excited whenever new tech comes out and it's hard to resist, but older stuff is definitely still worth checking out especially if you struggle to afford the newer stuff. Still running a GTX 1060 6GB which was upgraded from dual R9 290X. Also note I tend to run local gameservers and have full IDEs running in the background while taking a break and running games. I recently had to upgrade to 32GB RAM for that but the CPU was still plenty for the task.

This is the kind of videos I absolutely love to see on any tech/PC gaming channel. PC gaming is not about buying the most expensive parts and creating a flashy looking setup at your house. Sure go ahead and do that if you can afford it. But, I really find more joy bringing back an older PC to life. Buy older hardware for dirt cheap prices, add in an SSD, do a nice clean install of your favorite Linux Distro (or Windows if you absolutely must), find open source software that runs decently on a given system. There are also thousands of games from steam you can choose from that run decently well for your specific hardware combination. My best gaming days were just playing any game I could get my hand on when I was using a Pentium processor 1GB of RAM a 60GB HDD and 128 mb onboard Intel graphics. It was good enough to run some absolute gems like San Andreas, Prince of Persia series, Age of Empires, Dawn of War and this is what got me into gaming and PC building.

HW Unboxed did a piece on this, and the results were that cache size was most of the effect. Ryzens all have the same cache per core complex, whereas Intel CPUs have more cache as you get higher up the stack. So it's not that much the cores (more than 6, anyway), it's the cache size. *And, while this was unstated, this is valid within one generation of processors. Architecture and production node changes also have a large effect cross generation.

I mine Monero on my Ryzen 9 5950X. With many games, I can mine on 24 threads (instead of the full 32, but getting about 90%-95% of the hashrate) while playing a game and still get 100% performance in that game. On the flip side, some games simply REFUSE to run correctly if I have anything else running on even a few cores. Even mining on 8 threads and setting the process priority to IDLE simply destroys the game's performance. Hell Let Loose and Heroes & Generals are two examples of this. And then there is my beloved Star Ruler 2 game, which successfully loads my 32 threads to 100% utilization. This, obviously, is a major exception to the general rules expressed in this video. I am eagerly awaiting more games that will let my kick-ass CPU shine. Other than that, the unused cores are still doing something useful... =D

I am currently typing this comment on an i5 2500k OC as well. This and the 2600k were really beast in their day and mine is still proudly kickin' ass and takin names. That said, my gaming rig is an i7 7700k build which was also beast for its day, imo. Both rock solid but I only really game on the 7700k with a 1080Ti. I wont be building a new Rig until I see the new architecture lineup for both Intel and AMD. That and assuming I can ever get my hands on an EVGA FTW3 3080 at MSRP (which will likely not happy anytime soon).

I think having 10 cores in 2021 is about as useful as having 5 cores in 2016... It's better than 8, just like 5 is better than 4... but it's just an oddball one-off, I don't think 10 cores will ever be utilized the way you hope it will. I think 8 cores is the new 4 cores, and will be for awhile... I think by the time 8 cores isn't enough for most people, 16 cores will be the new standard. I really think having 10 cores in 2021 is like having 5 cores in 2016... it's just a goofy number that will never be a standard.

I don't play a wide variety of games, but 2 of my games (Anno 1800 and Battlefield 1) use all 16 threads of my CPU. Back when I built my PC, people said nothing more than a quad core was necessary. I can't believe people are still saying that. Sure, a quad core can work. My dad's old 4690k with a good OC is still good for most 120 FPS gaming. However, game engines have caught up with the times and will use the extra cores. They didn't in 2014, but they do in 2021.

I went from hardcapped at like 45fps on ultrawide 1440p (DX 11 or 12, settings at ultra or low, RTX off or on) to anywhere from 80-125, depending on RT/DLSS settings. I was like, cool, then played for 3 hours and never went back. Gets old fast. But for something like PCVR it's a huge improvement. Games are now so smooth at 120hz, when before I was experiencing hitching. Not, like, a TON, but enough to be noticeable and just that little nagging splinter ruining some of the immersion. Expensive, but worth it if you have a good GPU.

If your performance is bothering you, upgrade, if not, then don't. I also think it depends on how bad something is bothering you. I downgraded a system I had long ago that was pretty high-end to a system 1/3rd its price because I needed cash. I did notice a difference in performance, but honestly not enough to care, I got used to it fast. Occasionally when multi-tasking it did show its age, but it was worth putting up with over shelling out hundreds of dollars. It gamed fine, and that was all that mattered. I went from the guy in the friend group with the best PC to the worse and I didn't care because it still could game. Eventually I upgraded once I had money like that, but for awhile I enjoyed my budget PC. People get too caught up in getting the latest and greatest or flexing on people. Unless you're a pro gamer with a high HZ monitor, does it really matter if you're getting 70FPS VS 140FPS? Don't even get me started on RGB too. I mean, to each their own, but me, id rather throw my PC in an elegant non-windowed case and save hundreds not caring about aesthetics and focus more on performance or noise. Realistically, how many new games come out with cutting edge graphics or cripple your system? I'd bet its not many. People end up justifying buying a $500 GPU for a $60 game they're only going to play for 40 hours max because they want to play it on max instead of medium, and then for the next 2-3 years they'd be lucky to have 1 or 2 more games push their system like that.

My P50 Lenovo has been kicking ass. The computer has heavy work loads, I am a professional engineer, half way through my masters degree in mechanical engineering, and conduct molecular simulations. With the demands I place on this rig it still works well…. I run SolidWorks, MatLab, Simulink, LAMMPS, VMD, and many more. I understand gaming and content creators have different needs. Also, I use a HPC when I need 1000’s of Gigs for large molecular simulations. I would enjoy more videos for STEM. Thanks Linus Tech Tips!

Preston... i have a 7700k, to get better temps and more performance... delid the CPU.. apply liquid metal and put back the heatsink with silicon glue, then overclock that sucker.. you may get lucky and hit 5.0Ghz... for me i did this and for 24/7 use, all my cores are OC to 4.8ghz and temps stay really cool while gaming or doing whatever... You can get online a delid kit which show you how to do it and cryonaught liquid metal paste... its very easy to do and you will see a massive difference.

@@youtubeshadowbannedme I think that depends on your perspective. In benchmarks the difference between a 3080 and a 3090 is around 15 fps. So to get a 20 fps performance increase as well as eliminating the stuttering problem I was having; I'd definitely call that an upgrade.

Excel on idle would not use many resources. In reality, people would just minimize Excel even on old single-core processors back in the days. Compiling usually takes all the cores available unless you specify otherwise. If you plan to do some heavy compiling while gaming (some people do that, for example preparing Linux distros which takes a while) you could use extra cores providing you know how to use them . Same goes for practically every application - it depends does it run in background (not just sitting idle) and is it optimized for multi-core .

I use a weak ass i5 7300 HQ 4c/4t (laptop SKU) everyday, I was having some issues with the laptop, they were mostly ram related, Windows was using way more ram than it used to. Now that I upgrated to 16 GB of RAM, things go fine enought, even when multiple programs are open at the same time (MS Word, Foxit Reader, Spotify, Discord, Edge Browser with multiple tabs) I don't experience major issues in Dota 2, my most played game. There will be games that would not be playable ofc, but I can easly close most apps in that case and focus on the game, I don't really need as most users, to have everything open at once. If you need to, that's fine, there're obv valid reasons to buy a high core fast CPU but in practical terms, as long as you can do what you need to, a 4 core CPU is perfectly adequate. Whatever your experience was with the i7 5820K, it doesn't prove anything related to lower percentiles and stuttering. For the specific things you do, it seemed to be an issue, it could also had been another cause. You simply assumed it was cuz of having 4 cores. IDK if you got that idea from the tech deals guy, that a high core count CPU is better in terms of 1% and 0.1% lows, that's not true. If a CPU has better frametames is because of it being fast not because of cores, at least in most games. It has being proven by Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed multiple times.

@@SpaceLion949 It seems like my 8 year old i7-4700MQ aged better. 4 cores and 8 threads (hyperthreading makes a big difference for quad cores). I use 16GB of RAM, i couldn't believe the singlethread perfomance of this thing at 3.4GHz for the age. I can run Pokémon USUM at 60fps in CITRA 3DS emulator only in one or two threads (bad optimization, there's a quad core version of the 3DS) in 1920 x 1600 internal resolution (more CPU intensive than native resolution, CPU also renders parts of the image). I also do music production on this thing and it is fast enough, maybe too fast for being that old and for a mobile CPU. Insane framerates in CSGO, 120fps dust 2 with a horrible GPU bottleneck at 720p very low settings (GTX840M). The problem with CPU's like the 5820K is their fundamentally flawed architecture, i think they don't use Ring Bus so they get higher core to core latencies even when they have more cache. I did tests in my 4700MQ at 3.4GHz and it makes Haswell Xeons and similar HEDT processors from that era look like Bulldozer chips, rarely goes beyond 35 or 38 watts while gaming, close to 80 degress running at 1 volt (-87.9 milivolts of adaptative undervolt). At all core speed (3.2GHz), it runs at 0.9 volts. I bet that CPUs like 5820K fail to match a Sandy Bridge Core i7-2600K (and it's 10 years old) in games.

@@SpaceLion949 I had 16GB of ram and still had stuttering in modern games on a 7600k. It was pegged to 100% in AAA games releasing around 2019-early 2020. Upgrading ram wouldn't have fixed that and I didn't win the silicon lottery so it didn't over clock much more then stock setting. It just depends on the games you play and it was definitely the 4 core cpu for me in those games i played. I would have probably been fine moving to a 7700k but It wasn't much more money to buy a 3700 ryzen cpu/motherboard combo that was on sale (Intel cpus were still ridiculously overpriced around that time). Good timing too as I would have quit pc gaming altogether thanks to the current hardware pricing.
