53 years young, 112 pound brown belt here. Started when I was 45. Getting smashed by the bigger, stronger, younger ones all the time. Some times I win, some times I lose, every time I learn. Don’t chase the belt. It is waiting for you when the time is right. The gift is in the lesson, during class. Anytime is the right time to start. Repetition, refinement, discipline, loyalty, respect! You have the rest of your life to get it right.

As an older and smaller jiu-jitsu practioner do lower level belts ever beat you? Just curious because I'm a white belt and 45 years old. I'm concerned about moving up in belt levels but losing to lower level belts because of my age.
@dpdrums1
@dpdrums1 2 жыл бұрын
@Rob edwards, Yes, you will lose to lower belts. You have to leave your ego at the door and look at losing in a different light. I look at losing as being exposed, not knowing an answer to a question, making a mistake, trying something and failing. Sometimes, I just get out muscled or out hustled. You will lose, but more importantly, you will learn. Give it time and don’t be in a rush.

@@dpdrums1 Thanks, for the response. Also, I'm not a big guy. I weigh 170 lbs. I've noticed that being a big guy makes you better than what really are. You can can use strength, pressure and weight to overcome many things. This allows bigger guys to role with higher belts a lot easier. This has been my observation.

Started when I was 40, now a 42 year old blue belt. The best realization for me was that younger guys are generally faster, with more stamina and recover faster. You need to keep them locked down. Control the position and rely more on technique to conserve energy. Don’t try to keep up with them, you’ll only burn out and get injured. Also, more training is better than harder training.

At 41 and a Blue belt I've learned this the hard way. Need to keep reminding myself to just take my time and take it easy with the younger guys. Strength isn't always an issue but the recovery does take so much longer.

Very informative video, thanks for posting. Started at 48, got my black belt at 57. Whether you can start BJJ at 40+ and be successful depends on the school. I'm fortunate that my school focuses on technique, has normal people from all walks of life that are respectful on the mat, and kicks out the knuckleheads and MMA wanna-be's who refuse to listen to the professor and put other students at risk. By the way, note how Joao and Marcelo roll with each other in this video You can do this "flow roll" all day without getting injured. A good school teaches and promotes this kind of sparring as a training option. Now 62, this is how I roll most of the time with fellow advanced belts. I've got nothing to prove and would prefer to stay injury free since it now takes way to long to heal.

Maybe, or maybe just super dedicated, show up most days, focus and retain all techniques, it can be done. He might lose in training at times to super blues and purples, but be able to know the techniques in better detail and correct and coach them when something is off. Black belt doesnt mean you can wreck everybody, Helio and Carlson at red belts were in their 70s and 80s, and could barely move, but they could still teach and correct and point out mistake and proper techniques.

Getting your belt tends to happen quicker when you’re older, because your skill set is “you vs you.” An older grappler’s skills are based on his age and potential ability at that age, as the instructor sees fit. This isn’t always the case, but it usually is. Bravo to anyone who rolls despite their age 🤙🏼

Never happened in our school over 3 years of existence. And that is not simply luck, it’s by design. Of course it’s possible to have accidents, just like in any sport. But if you join a good school the chances are drastically reduced. Take care!

@@gbsainteanne first role at the end of the first lesson. He in my closed card. I pulled his head down and in response he put both palms on each of my lower ribs and pushed down to break the guard. That was enough to break both ribs. The lowest rib on either side. I think that’s a pretty common response to being pulled forward within someone’s close guard. I have course couldn’t go back after that and then the pandemic hit so probably if someone’s that injured you would not know it because they would not come back.

I broke two ribs in judo. I realized later that I had made the attacker fall on me in a new throw we were learning. My falling technics needed more work. I haven't broken anything since. I started judo as an adult at 41.

Stated Judo at 58, added BJJ at 59, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My trick for Judo and BJJ takedowns, Stand lefty, to bait my lapel, when my opponent goes for it, two on one. I confound and confuse lots of younger, faster guys. Sshhh, that’s my secret, don’t tell anyone. In my opinion BJJ is for every age group. The friendships and connections you make with your partners are like the fountain of youth.

Defintely age, weight matter in all grappling sports. Someone said that when rolling over 40, every 10 year difference with your opponent is equivalent to a belt difference, similarly, every 10 kg weight difference is equal to a belt level difference. So for example if you are 50 BB and roll with a 20 blue belt 10 kgs heavier, things will be very equal on paper.

Jiujitsu is probably the best art for older people. You're not going to smash the younger people, but you will still get good enough to handle 99% of normal people.

My former sensei in sumo ( yes I said sumo. It's not what you think) got into Jiu-jitsu... in his sixties. I personally think if you are blessed with good health, age is a number. Jiu-jitsu is the next art i am considering to get into. I have rolled before and I was in my early forties when I did. I am 46 now, but I am still very functional. I personally older people should pre-condition before getting into something like this and really zero in on what you need to do to prepare for what's needed which from what I am seeing is functionality, strong core, cardio, and flexibility. I constantly stretch specifically use ginastica stretching . Age is just a number in my opinion. I do have a wrestling background and I love grappling. I do want to continue my " visionquest" like my sensei. Covid is putting a serious damper, but my time is not over in martial arts. Not yet.

I started at age 50. I was promoted to Black Belt at age 63. I hav competed locally, nationally, and on the World stage. I have competed giving away as much as twenty years and have more than my share of gold medals. Do not look at age as an obstacle, don’t brag about how old you are either. Give it, get it. I was promoted at the Lab, by Professor Bret Oteri. My co-presenter was the legendary Roberto Abrieu, AKA Cyborg
