Thank you for the insane amount of testing on show here, and for breaking it into chapters so I could skip around and watch just the games I'm interested in. Btw - my preferred way to play DESORDRE in 1440p on my 3060ti is with Path Tracing low and DLSS=Performance with the FSR3 mod enabled, which works flawlessly in the game with Path Tracing enabled, but is glitchly in Lumen, for some reason.

The VRAM is the main reason I went with 6700xt as my upgrade from the gtx 1070 instead of a 3060ti or 3070. Seemed silly to buy a card twice as powerful but still the same VRAM. And im happy with my choice because i got a new 4k TV and playing games in 1440p/4k regularly use 8-12 gb of vram

Thanks for the effort on doing a bunch of these tests. I was actually planning to upgrade my RTX 3070 to 4070 ti super but decided to just wait for RTX 5000. This video really helps my decision. 8GB VRAM wouldn't be enough on some AAA games with max settings/texture but DLSS tech really helps to lower it down and make it playable.

Is 8GB VRAM enough in 2024?, easy answer is Yes. I know that cause I actually have one to play all my PC games, and now with the Frame Generation mod I can even play Starfield at the highest settings at 1440p at 90ish FPS with my 3070, another game 1440p, high settings and high FPS is Avatar, the issue in todays new games is not about you need more VRAM the problem is within the game putrid mess of optimization, and developers are just relying in DLSS or FSR scaling methods to fix their putrid mess of developed new games.

It seems to work well in most games, which is great. I have a 3060Ti and haven't noticed any issues so far, but I play at 1080p and mostly on high or optimized settings. By the way, if anyone has a problem with VRAM in RE4R, I recommend turning off RT (it's very subtle and I don't like how shiny Salazar's castle is with it), set shadows to high (looks the same as max, but eats 2 GB less ) and use high (2GB) or high (3GB) textures because at lower settings they sometimes pop in and out while 2GB and 3GB don't.

Thank you! So bandwidth and VRAM are both important, and if a game manages to exhaust both at the same time, that's when you have a problem. So for example, 6700 XT may be low at bandwidth, but its generous VRAM size makes up for a lot of those of the more demanding games. That was interesting to learn. If I said things right, of course.

I also ended up picking up a 6700xt over a 3060ti as my previous GTX 670 4GB lasted me waaaaay longer than it should have with it's extra 2GB of VRAM. It was also like $60 cheaper at the time. I have loved it for the most part. I wonder if Ancient Gameplays would make a quick video troubleshooting bandwidth limited scenarios vs VRAM. I know you can usually see VRAM spilling over into RAM and getting frametime spikes, but I suspect I may be pushing my 6700xt a little too hard in games like Alan Wake 2 and Avatar. Or it could be my SSD in Alan Wake 2. Or it could be some weird other setting in Avatar (especially with framegen on in Avatar). Just weird I get stutters in those games when moving the camera from time to time even though I have a 7800x3D now with it.

The thing with vram spill over is, on some games it won't show any performance hit like fps drop or stuttering, instead game engine will try to lower textures resolution, most people won't even realized this happen if it's not rendering too low to ps2 like textures, and without side by side comparison, the other thing to watch out is frametime pacing, when you max out vram usage it usually become erratic and microstuttering start to occur despite the game still producing enough fps.

One of my favorite past times is designing/creating a vehicle in Automation: The Car Company Tycoon Game and exporting and testing/racing the cars in BeamNG. With my prior 5700 XT, the 8GB framebuffer meant I had a slideshow in both games if I kept Automation open in the background when I loaded up BeamNG, so I needed to close Automation after exporting and then open up BeamNG. With my 6800 XT, I can run both games simultaneously and I can just alt+tab between them when I'm testing my builds. 16GB may not be totally necessary, but damn, it sure is nice to have for my use case.

The 3070 was a decent card that should of had 12GB instead of 8GB. Just like the 4070 now. I'm curious how accurate the in-game VRAM usage info is. For example would a game really be using 6 or 7GB out of it's 8GB graphics card? I just keep getting flashbacks from when I played The Last of US part 1 on pc. Im sure there is some sort of memory spill. Im sure 8GB cards are fine for most of the 1080p cards, but if I was building a new pc in 2024, regardless of the resolution I would definitely want a minimum of 12GB VRAM. Just like you would want to have 32GB instead of 16... an SSD instead of a HDD... etc etc..

Good video but I think you should stress test the GPU with the most demanding sceneries games have to offer. In some of the gameplay examples it was clear that the frames dropped considerably when you looked towards a vast open space or during driving in Cyberpunk, some didn't feature this like TLOU and Metro Exodus that only had interior footage which isn't very graphically intensive.

1:10:18 I think that 10GB of VRAM should be sufficient for 1080p gaming (if you don’t max out the ray tracing settings). However, for current-gen games with 1440p and ray tracing, the picture looks different. In this case, cards with 12GB of VRAM should be the minimum. I understand that ray tracing can look cool in some games, but for the time being, I am absolutely fine playing the games without ray tracing. Not everyone is a hardcore enthusiast/elitist; there are also people/gamers like me who are happy with less. Sooner or later, I will also upgrade to a card with more VRAM, but for the moment, I should be okay with my RX 6700. By the way, you could also do a test with cards like the 3080 10GB, RX 6700 10GB, RX 7600 8GB, and RTX 4060 8GB. However, only focus on the raster-performance at 1080p (high - ultra) and 1440p (medium to high with FSR/DLSS).

I'm still getting by with 8gb for 1440p with my 3060ti that I bought in 2021, but since the middle of last year, I'm increasingly having to tweak settings to work around limited VRAM. Using DLSS Quality or even Balanced, along with lowering texture quality settings are the most useful settings to tweak. You can still squeak by with 8gb for 1440p gaming in new titles, but nobody but should be buying an 8gb card for such a purpose anymore. Hey felow countryman, just one litle opinion, cause it can be usefull improve your excellent work. Put more racing games on the benchmark, but real racing games, like F1 games, ACC games, etc. I am currently thinking of upgrading to 1440p, mainly cause of Formula one games, or racing games in general. The issue, we racing gamers (competitive) is the imersion needs bigger monitors, and if the resolution is "low" like my atcual 1080p, it sucks lol. Currently i am thinking about update to the rysen 7 7800x3d and a 4070 Ti Super for playing, and cause i need to buy a new motherboard to go from the i7 10th gen (the one without the K), i going to buy a MB dual slot to pair with my current 3070 and use for the extra 2 monitors on 1080p and obs. I'm going to try so maintain my AZZA 360 blizzard and 850W psu. What do you think? But for now, Is my current 3070 pair with i7 10700 able to run F1 23 on 1440p at 150fps at least? As always, GOOD, Awesome, and very useful work. 💪💪💪💪💪

Honestly, its just barely enough if u want to play modern titles at decent settings. So no, if you already have a 8GB GPU, you're fine for now. If you're planning on buying a new one though, I'd suggest going with 10 / 12GB cards. If your budget can allow that. Perfect card for 500$ is honestly the RX 7800XT. Great midrange card, and it'll last you. Sense 16Gb of vram.

True answer is: that depends. Do you care about ray tracing and ultra textures at higher resolution than 1080p? Then NO! absolutely not, dont even think about 8gb cards. But if you want tu turn you settings down to high and sometimes medium and dont care about rt at all , specially in the near future, then just go for it. i would absolutely not buy a 8gb gpu for 1440p monitors, i have a 3080 10gb and i dont even use higher settings and still have problems here and there due to vram... video is kinda biased in that regard, sorry.

Acutally my 3070 undervoltage at 818mv 1800mhz + oc ram 1000mhz draw max peak 170watts. I dont care about 2% better fps but efficient fps per watts. I know rtx 4000 series destroy but the price... ony my country 6800 add about 100$ more. It is it worth? I think yes but i dont know. Pair with my 12600k. 1440p ❤

Hey Fabio, there's been issue that has been affecting people with Vega and RDNA system. Systems with Vega iGPU and RDNA dGPU. I finally found the fix for it. If you can make a video about it and make people aware about it. It started when AMD started splitting the drivers into Vega and RDNA starting with 23.10.2. I took my time and found the Fix for it. I think I'm the only one with that finally solved this issue in the world. If you can, i can try to email or contact you regarding this, so that you can make a video about it. Thank you.

@@AncientGameplays It basically affects steam starting up loading time.. timeline window in Davinci resolve will be blank etc.. I'll copy paste the fix I posted on reddit down below.. It is a big paragraph explaining the whole thing.. Guys I found the permanent fix for this. I played around with the drivers to find it out. So basically what happened is AMD stopped updating vega drivers. So now the two drivers are diffferent, RDNA and VEGA. Since most you have APU with Vega graphics and a dGPU with RDNA, this problem arises. AMD messed up while splitting the drivers on 23.10.2 drivers. On 23.8.2, Vega and RDNA graphics are on the same driver version (BEFORE THE SPLIT DRIVERS) which is around 660MB in size. On 23.10.2, For Vega and Polaris is 660MB + RDNA is a separate driver package which is 660 mb. Total 1.2GB. If you go to AMD Driver Page for your graphics card, Under Driver details, there's a Release Notes link. If you click that and scroll down, you'll see something liek this, The AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 installation package can be downloaded from the following link: By clicking the Download button, you are confirming that you have read and agreed to be bound by the terms and conditions of the End User License Agreement (“EULA”). If you do not agree to the terms and conditions of these licenses, you do not have a license to any of the AMD software provided by this download. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 Driver for Windows® 10 & Windows® 11 64-bit (RDNA only (660mb size)) Systems pairing RDNA series graphics products with Polaris or Vega series graphics products: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 Driver Including Vega and Polaris Series Graphics Support for Windows® 10 & Windows® 11 64-bit (vega (660mb size) + Rdna (660mb size) ) What you see is AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 Driver for Windows® 10 & Windows® 11 64-bit (THIS IS RDNA only (660MB size)) AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 Driver Including Vega and Polaris Series Graphics Support for Windows® 10 & Windows® 11 64-bit (THIS IS VEGA (660mb size) + RDNA (660MB size) the combined driver, 1.2GB Total) Do not install the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 Driver Including Vega and Polaris Series Graphics Support for Windows® 10 & Windows® 11 64-bit This includes the messed up Vega drivers that was released during 23.10.2 and up. or DO NOT AUTO UPDATE FROM THE AMD SOFTWARE (VERY IMPORTANT) THE PERMANENT FIX What we need is 23.8.2 drivers where the Vega drivers are Perfectly fine. and the latest RDNA drivers for the RDNA GPU. Download both 23.8.2 drivers and the latest AMD graphics driver (at this time it's 24.1.1) (Do not download the vega + rdna combined drivers 1.2GB in size). Only the RDNA only Driver which is 660MB-ish in size Download DDU and DriverExplorer(for extra clean up) from Github. Extract Driver explorer zip. Go to SAFE MODE Use DDU to clean drivers in SAFE MODE. Select Clean and Do not restart option. BE CAREFUL Go the the extracted DriverExplorer folder and run the Rapr.exe. It will open the app. Sort the list by Publisher. Select all the AMD or Advanced Micro Devices stuff. On the right side, check Force Deletion. Then select Delete Drivers. After that is done, Restart your PC. Install 23.8.2 Drivers Full Install option. After installation is done. Restart PC. Open AMD Adrenaline Software > Settings > System Tab > Turn off Automatic updates and put it to manual. Now Install AMD 24.1.1 (As of now) drivers. When u try to install the driver, as you'll see only RDNA part shows version number in the installation window. For your Vega iGPU, it shows the Download Driver link. Do not press that. If you see this, you have successfully fixed the issue. Proceed with installation of the RDNA driver. then Restart. Then install AMD chipset driver for your motherboard or laptop. IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO FIGURE THIS OUT!!! So now you have 23.8.2 drivers for your Vega iGPU that is not broken and.... latest and greatest (24.1.1 as of now) for your RDNA GPU at the same time. AMD really messed up vega drivers when did the split drivers. It's not only Steam that is messed up actually, davinci resolved and even photoshop is messed up. FOR FUTURE DRIVER UDPATES. DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY INSTALL IT FROM AMD SOFTWARE. IT WILL TRY TO INSTALL THE COMBINED DRIVERS (VEGA & RDNA) WHERE VEGA DRIVER IS MESSED UP. TO INSTALL LATEST DRIVERS, ALWAYS GO TO AMD WEBSITE, DOWNLOAD THE RDNA ONLY DRIVER (660 MB in size). NOT THE 1.2GB size one which includes the combined drivers. THE LATEST GRAPHICS DRIVER PAGE ALWAYS INCLUDES THE RDNA ONLY DRIVER. IT'S WHEN YOU CLICK ON THE RELEASE NOTES Under DRIVER DETAILS AND SCROLL DOWN, YOU'll SEE, SEPARATION BETWEEN RDNA only --- AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 Driver for Windows® 10 & Windows® 11 64-bit (THIS IS 660MB in size) VEGA + RDNA (Combined Drivers) --- AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.1.1 Driver Including Vega and Polaris Series Graphics Support for Windows® 10 & Windows® 11 64-bit (THIS IS VEGA (660mb size) + RDNA (660MB size) 1.2GB Total) Hope this helps.
