I got a mini PC with the i5 8500t (35 Watt version). This was deliberate for the reasons you mention. It runs nice and quiet as my desktop computer, and has plenty of "power" for what I want to do, which is programming, web work, general browsing and videos. I have Debian GNU/Linux on it and it runs very well.

It's a big factor in my preference for these over laptops. So many laptops settle for 3-4 USB ports, one being DP-alt mode and a dedicated HDMI output. Meanwhile these things will happily have 5-6 USB ports plus 2-3 dedicated video ports, not to mention other things like ethernet jacks missing from modern laptops!

It's not buyer beware, if the items you bought it as set were meant to work with each other, they should be compatible with each. And for the power supply, not booting is not compatible. In my opinion that's fraud.

I ordered a 7060 Micro with a 65w i7-8700 and it came with a 130w power supply brick and have had no issues. My mother in law needed a computer a year later so we got Dell optiplex micro 7070 with the 65w i7-9700. They shipped it with a 65w adapter and upon boot the BIOS said system performance would be limited until the correct adapter was attached. Dell Happily sent me the correct adapter. I ordered both units from Dell outlet which is the only place ive seen Dell Sell the 65w TDP versions. But for the size its amazing to have this little box with a full power i7, up to 32gb ram, with wifi/B, Nvme drive and a 3.5sata drive. Only downside is intel UHD.

Regarding the charts, they look fine, but the text labels are TINY. Increasing the font size on that would make them useful. Interesting video, though it seems like that unit was frankensteined, as I think that's a 35 Watt heatsink.

They replied on my comment earlier that in fact the heatsink shown in this video is the 65W version, which to me seems weak compared to Elitedesk mini all copper one. It would be helpful to do a temperature test.

That seller would be getting be getting pushed for a partial refund or to suck up the cost and have it shipped back. Shipping stuff with what they say is one thing, but shipping something under the guise of it not working while claiming what is a reasonable expectation of a tool that works is semi-fraud. In other words, it is reasonable to expect that if a person says they will supply a dell power supply with a dell computer, or laptop, that that power supply should work on said device. To put a non functioning power supply in a bundle where reasonable expectation is they will be compatible means the seller itself is shady, and eBay does not like shady. This 100% would go all the way in the favor of the buyer, since ebay is very pro buyer.

I have a client who bought a few of these to replace some old PCs in their office, shortly before the pandemic struck. They are really tiny and were absurdly expensive. Well, in my country, anyway. They might be the exact same model as the one in the video, but they are definitely really identical. But I believe the ones they got have an SSD instead of an HDD.

I would have filled a complaint for deceptive sales practices against that seller. Yes he did send a list supply, but it doesn't work with the system... So he should have said that it was a non-functioning system. A quick picture of the system not hitting with the power supply would have proven the point.

IMO - leaving that kind of practice unchecked serves to encourage and embolden that seller in decieving other customers.

@asdrubale bisanzio I believe this was purchased through eBay, and they have a "Resolution Center". One of the options is for recieving an item that does not match the sellers description. That's what I would have filled. IMO - this is not about getting the money back, it is just about keeping the seller honest. If they realize that customers will take action when they are deceitful, and they are jeopardizing their standing with eBay then they might learn a lesson.

I saw a similar Optiplex 7060 Micro unit locally for the equivalent of $144 USD. It doesn't have wifi, but has the i5 8500, 8gb ram, and 120gb ssd (this doesn't bother me as its easy to upgrade). I have to make sure about the power adapter being the 130w version as from the pics I got from the seller I have a suspicion its a 65w one, but I hope I'm wrong and they have 130w adapters for their Optiplex 7060 Micro systems as they also sell the 9020, 3050, 3070, 3080 Micros. Update: Seller confirmed it was the 130w adapter. Currently unsure if I would get one to replace my Xeon E3-1240 v3 + RX 560 system as that is overkill in performance, but mostly in power consumption for what I use it for which is media playback, secondary computer, and bare metal Linux test machine.

I was thinking this might be worth it, I like this little platform, very robust and flexible...but. There's a big difference between a 14nm Intel 65w cpu and a 7nm AMD 65w cpu in terms of thermal performance. I'd love a 4350g/4650g in this package.

Ikr! This is especially useful if you need decent graphics because intel desktop graphics are not good. Even Iris Xe will be limited on desktop chips (24EU on desktop vs 72 EU on mobile) which is a shame for these mini PCs

@TheGoat The main problem is that "TDP" has to be in quotes. At 65 watts actual power draw, the AMD processors perform better and probably produce a little less heat. TDP is a marketing number, and had little bearing on real performance metrics.

@TheGoat at the same load, Zen 2 is FAR more efficient. The efficiency means a lot as these are just overclocked laptops parts. It would mean the difference between constantly noisy PC and a quiet one at the same load! And its also possible to limit the 4650G to 35W. Hell, 4750G is you're crazy enough or you're like "I wonder what it would be with EIGHT cores..."

@TheGoat In this case efficiency is actually the biggest issue. Intel's 14nm process is phenomenal when paired with their latest architectures. This is true as long as the chip can be supplied with adequate power and the cooling that goes along with it. 14nm on its own is as efficient as most other foundries 10nm, but can't keep up with TSMC 7nm with comparable architecture. In a SFF PC, efficiency matters, so a "65w" cpu that produces 65w of heat in a real word workload (intel chip) vs a "65w" cpu that produces 20w (amd chip) of heat at the same performance level will be unusable. If efficiency is no problem, 14nm is absolutely outstanding. At high power draw, intel can crush anyone. But you don't have SFF cooling solutions that can keep up with the "fast and hot" intel chips.

I bought a 7050 with an i5 6500 and the seller sent it with a 95 watt PSU. The system did boot, and I didn't get that message, but the CPU was limited in a lower power state as a result. However, I was slightly upset because the seller should have tested it out with the power supply and made sure everything was working at some point. I do as a seller, and I expect the same from others. If not, it should be sold as untested. Granted, perhaps it could be an oversight in my case, because you wouldn't know unless you were looking to make sure the CPU was boosting properly. In your case, there's no excuse IMO.

I've just got one brand new, it has 3x DP ports - I don't get what the point is? Why not 3 different video out ports? It would be a lot more versatile with 1x DP , 1 x HDMI and 1 x VGA for example. It is really not a system meant to output video on multiple monitors at a time, different port types would be much more useful in terms of connectivity.

We have a moderator in the forums that has a bunch of the systems in a glossary format, forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/tiny-mini-micro-pc-experiences.30230/ We can probably do a USB generation/ capabilities matrix, but it is fairly difficult to do cost/ performance. These can have different CPUs, memory configurations, and pricing changes. Thunderbolt/ USB Type-C ports can be added sometimes to the expansion slot. What we are trying to do is show off features of each generation along with the service and expansion aspects. Feedback understood though. Just trying to get something that is useful.

Very nice video! I was hoping you would do a video describing pros and cons of the higher TDP models, so this is very nice. I recently (last week) bought an EliteDesk 800 G4 DM (mini) based on your very positive feedback in your KZbin video and review article. It is interesting that there seems to be virtually no price difference between i5-8500T and i5-8500 models on eBay, so to me it made sense to get a faster one (I'm not stacking them so the fact that the intake/vents are on the top is not a concern). A couple of observations: 1. You note that the fan rpm ramp (at least for Dell) is much more aggressive on the 65W CPU. It would be interesting for you to do a comparison of noise at idle. For me, using this as a desktop machine, I will gladly take 20% more performance (for the same price) in exchange for it being loud at full-blast, as long as it is quiet at idle. I would assume that identical T and non-T models consume more or less the same amount of power @ the same clock multiplier, but the base clock of the T models is lower. 2., I had the same PSU issue! I bought a non-HP branded power supply that matched the specs on the bottom of the unit, but it gave me a BIOS error code (3.4). Only genuine HP "smart" power supplies apparently work in the 65W TDP model, whereas research suggests that any equivalent laptop PSU will work with the 35W units.

I was given a HP Elitedesk 800 G1 DM that had a dead NIC. snagged a new mobo from ebay for it and installed server2012r2 on it. It's just the i3-4160T model, upgraded to 8gb mem, but it's great as my little torrent/serviio/SMB server. i have a couple of 2.5" external drives that i store media on, plugged into it.

That heatsink looks weak for 65W TDP. I have the 65W Elitedesk G4 mini and the heatsink is beefier and all copper, not aluminum. IIRC Optiplex micro with 65W should have copper heatsinks too. You should be careful because there are people that put 65W CPUs on 35W models, and while that may work on some models the longevity of the components is questionable because they are being pushed past their design limits. It would have been very useful if you included temperature testing and a clip of the pc working and fan noise. For the record, the temps on the 65W Elitedesk mini get to mid 80s (°C) on full load cinebench multi core, and the fan is pretty audible like Patrick said, but it does not thermal throttle like other models (cough cough Intel Mac mini). But in standard usage temps are good and noise is null, I really like having the extra headroom when needed.

2 years ago I found a 7060 micro on craigslist for $300 with the 8700t and 16gb of ram. At the time they were going for ~$800 on ebay. I threw a cheap ssd in it and it was my TV controller until I found a 6i7kyb. I kept the older nuc just because I think they're more interesting machines.

That last one is an important lesson. OTOH, I would never sell a PC with the wrong power adapter. If I'm selling a "working PC", I want it to BE a WORKING PC when the customer gets it. Otherwise, I'm goanna piss off customers. Not a good business plan. It's also STUPID to send the wrong one. It could have been included with a PC that actually used a 65-Watt brick. If the customer that needed a 130 Watt and only has 1 PC, they'll probably throw the 65 Watt one away. Stupid waste for "bad press".

I got my micro 7070 for $150 off ebay. It had a Celeron (16 gigs RAM, 256 gig SATA SSD, Win 11, 130 watt supply). I had an i5 8500 (no 'T') lying around. It worked okay, but experienced lots of freezes. I thinned out the heatsink compound, which eventually made it a reliable PC. The problem I couldn't solve was the audio from the headphone jack. It 'POPS' periodically. Loud. Mostly it happened when audio is present in a program, after a period of quiet...like the audio subsystem shut down when idle, and needed to be restarted on demand. I haven't solved that problem yet, but the workaround was to use a cheap USB sound dongle. That's fine, but I'd like to tackle the original 'pop' problem. Any ideas?

A bit different. TinyPilot sells as an assembled kit, and has gone through iterations. It has worked relatively well since November when it arrived. Until PiKVM sales happen, TinyPilot is basically the turnkey option to get up and running quickly.

Hey, got a question. I have the 7060 micros as well but mine looked to be rated for 90 watt. On the bottom it says the power input is 19.5 volts and 4.62 amps. Is it possible that some are rated for 130 W while some are rated for 90 w?

I like these to run ESXi on because the custom image works across all Dell machines. I'm a telephony guy and not hardcore IT guy. The 65W heatsink is larger than the 35W heatsink but curiously the 65W heatsink is only retained by 3 screws whereas the 35W is retained by 4 screws. The 35W units seem to be more likely to have built-in wifi.

DisplayPort does audio passthrough, so if you used a DP to HDMI adapter or cable it would work. Dell makes a mount for these so you can attach them to the back of a TV or monitor using the VESA mount holes.

Seeing as it didn't come with a proper power brick and you had to get one, they could have just not included one at all... But how do you know if this even works or not? I wouldn't buy this at all or even consider knowing this information. There are better things out there that come with the proper stuff.

The GPU could perhaps be expanded via the m.2 slot, as you can get an adapter, however it will look a bit janky as the actual machine has no PCIe Slot (See here:kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2aknGaPm7uEhNU). And I’m not sure about the USB C port, however I wouldn’t see why not.

I don't get the point of this review, it was clearly only that cheap because they were clearing them out to make room for the 7080 micro which is much more expensive, and in line with what you'd expect for a Computer with the specs they have.

We are looking at over two dozen of these units as inexpensive cluster nodes. Most are 35W, but we wanted to check out a 65W offering. Dell, HPE, and Lenovo all sell tons of these systems, so we are looking at generational differences, vendor differences, and spec/options for the systems we purchased.

please help , I have this same specific model and the CPU fan is always spinning at very low RPM as a result this tiny pc is getting very hot even on surfing internet browser chrome temp. around 75 to 85 c always , it is painful there in no CPU fan control option in BIOS , anybody can resolve this issue I will be greatful to you . regards .

I am surprised how you did not cover a kill-a-watt test in idle conditions and at say 50% and 100% load. There is a reference of 80W usage but would it not be right to cover this important test as objective of this video is really to cover T and non T processors? Very disappointed to tell you frankly.

We have the idle numbers on the main site. Generally we just use a range that is basically idle to max. We also do not use low-end measurement gear like Kill-A-Watt units. The challenge doing exact numbers for T to non-T is that we did not have the 7060 with the T variant. So we could compare a HP or Lenovo unit to this unit, but since Dell uses a different cooling setup for the non-T version, the measurements would not be comparing just the T to non-T difference.
