Got my Biochemistry degree at Penn State and got into medical devices after college. Took 4 years to reach 200k/yr. Biochemistry degrees are great but if you want to make more money with a 4 year degree in it, don't get caught up in the details. Look at other opportunities that respect your degree but might not use it the way you originally thought you might.

@@louie6490 Most biochem majors plan on going to med school or doing research for the rest of their lives. Indeed, and I can imagine this is extra scary in the US considering the high cost. Doing an academic bachelor essentially prepares you for the M.Sc. The % of people searching a job after an academic B.Sc, in my field of study for example (Biomed), is super super low. If people are lab oriented and want to work with a B.Sc, they take a professional bachelor and that DOES give them enough employability because the focus of that course-set is more hands-on!

@andyiswonderful4 жыл бұрын
Good video. I've always found biochemistry to be fascinating, but I never took a course in it. You commented on the high level of memorization required. I've often wondered why there is so much for this discipline. Does knowing every step in the Krebs Cycle make a person a better biochemist? Then, giving the millions of biochemical pathways we know about, what is the point? No one could possibly memorize even a small fraction of them, except for an idiot savant, I guess. There was lots of memorization in Organic Chemistry, which is a topic I loved, but that memorization was much more applicable to solving real problems. Anyway, I got my degrees in chemical engineering, so no time or need for biochemistry at that time. Now, many chemical engineering departments have rebranded themselves as Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Departments, so I'm guessing there is more of a need for it now. Also, with the rise in the genetics industry, aligned with Pharma, I would think that biochemistry would be on the uptick.

Ok. So I have a B.S degree in biochem from one of the top 50 colleges in the us. I would like to point out that the salary numbers you put up are not correct. People dont make 90k with just a BS in biochem without climbing the ladder, so we call. Often times, people with a biochemistry college degree can either find a job in the industry tobe a slave and get dirt pay or you go get a more advanced degree. In the industry, theres a “glass ceiling” for people who dont have a phd when they try to climb the ladder. Not saying its impossible, but unless you got GREAT connections, you almost cant make it to management without a phd. I would not advise anyone to get their master in biochem too unless its paid for. A master in biochem would give you only a slight increase in salary for the same kind of work. If you wanna make more than 80 right out of college, do computer science. To be honest, I would not suggest anyone major in biochem. Even if one has the passion to do research on cancer metastasis, which is me, you should major in something more useful as an undegrad, then you jack up your cell bio knowledge doing undergrad research or as a phd student. But that requires experience and walking the path to figure out I guess. Its just the pay you put up is so wrong and people dont get paid at all near those amounts with a BS in biochem

I have a biochemistry degree, I did 2 internships at good companies, both paid, and I worked at a lab for 2 years all during my undergrad also paid. I have good references. My resume is better than almost every person I know in my program, at a good state school. And I've applied to over 500 jobs and no offers. Been searching for 4 months and I have to start paying loans now, and I'll probably have to get a normal job unrelated to my degree. Total scam if you ask me. Do some type of engineering or programming or math heavy discipline. I regret this degree. Also, I'm not some ugly weirdo, I'm handsome and tall, dress nice and am well spoken, so it's not some other factor. Biochem programs don't prepare you at all for industry. It's a PhD only route. The programs are designed by academics who have no idea what the industry wants. They want you to stay in academia, so they don't train you for the real world. You'll start looking for jobs and be like "why don't I know what GMP is? Why don't I know all these techniques? Why didn't they teach me any of this stuff?" Oh you know PCR and western blot and cell culture? Great, no one cares.

So I'm still in high school lol but I plan on going to college for a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics, and to do that I need a bachelor's in chemistry, biology, or biochemistry! So.... Edit: So when ya gonna make a Pharmaceutics video? Lol please!
@miam74012 жыл бұрын
Biochemistry all the way! The breadth and depth of knowledge that you'll cover in your entire undergrad biochem program will prepare you well for a PhD in pharmaceutics. You'll learn a lot of biological processes, chemical reactions, and metabolic pathways that will help you understand and visualize the processes that pharmaceutics relies so heavily on. Since biochemistry is pretty much a marriage of biology and chemistry, you really won't be missing out on the classes that each respective major will have. If I were to rank these majors on a scale of how useful they would be for a PhD in pharmaceutics, it would go (1) Biochemistry (2) Chemistry (3) Biology. Chemistry is very integral to drug interactions and so is understanding the biology of the living system you are creating these drugs for, so that's why I think biochemistry would be the best fit for your goals, since it encompasses both aspects.

I did biochem before med school. It's tough and your grades are likely to suffer a bit. Biochem tend to hear towards industry or research. Does give you reasonable work ethic for med school. But I found the biochem actually taught in med school was a joke compared to real biochem I learned in biochem 2nd year onwards. So up to you how sciencey you are. If you want to do a career in medicine with academia as well then this might be great ;) say oncologist or haematology

Is a biochem major with only a bachelor or maybe even a master more likely to get a natural sciences manager job than like a chem major or something? I see around the 5 min mark that natural sciences manager is a potential job you can get w/ a science/biochem degree but I just wanna know if maybe you’re more likely to get a job like that with a Biochem degree over other degrees, considering it’s a “manager” job. So with only a bachelor degree what makes someone more qualified than another person to get a job like that? Especially with it looking like it has such a high paying salary Thanks

do you have a question about this? I’m a biochemistry major who just finished junior year at a school that has a fairly prominent med school. biochem is a pretty prominent degree (along with chem, bio) for people planning on med school. were you surprised to be told he should major in it?
@dawgfather21017 ай бұрын
@haysdixon6227 Yes, at that time in our search, having so many say, "he needs to major in biochem," surprised me. Had a friend majoring in agriculture get into med school (early 2000s), so I figured it was mostly about how well you do on MCAT. But....now, 3 months later! My son has been accepted into the University of Georgia freshman class, where he will be majoring in biochemistry. Also.....UGA is in the process of having a medical school. They already have one of the southeastern top veterinary schools (which my HS sophomore daughter wants to be). UGA has a partnership with MCG (medical college of Georgia), but now they plan to have their own.
