The market is super crazy right now. I started in Tech way back in 1999 then left the industry in 2015 to get into Real Estate as an Asset Manager. Now that I’m trying to get back in, it’s like my past experience never existed. I’ve had roles in Help Desk, Desktop Support, Network Engineer, SOC Analyst, and my last role in 2015 as a IT Project Manager. Back when I started you didn’t need a degree, just an interest in tech and a willingness to learn. Not today though, if you want to get in make sure to get a 4 year degree, certs, and some type of experience even if it’s volunteering.

I think one of the main issues with traditional college is that it revolves around Greed. Get the most amount of money via Gov loans on student;s back while delivering a mostly sub-par, bloated, slow-moving product. One would think that with all that Gov money and available technology and media the "Education Experience" would be..Amazing. But instead colleges are just growing for the sake of getting more money while providing little useful knowledge. At least in the Tech field. It's like an aging mafia refusing change so they can protect their profits. Anyway, Many alternatives nowadays.

There hasn't been an incentive for universities to really ever lower costs, until just recently with all the alternatives that now exist. That should put pressure on many institutions to drop costs when applications and enrollments fall.

If you are a black man like me, you absolutely will benefit from having one.

I would say a degree is helpful, but mot necessary for most jobs. I would say, if the job you want requires a degree, then get the degree.

So you think getting a certificate for say “IT Support Specialist” role worth it/enough? (I’m thinking of getting into it) *entry level
