If you're wanting to work in construction while going to school, look into an apprenticeship too. No student loan debt, hands on experience and minimal school (8 weeks of the year and a job to go back to after). Skilled trades will be in huge demand. There are lots of people retiring, and not enough apprentices being signed up currently to meet the demand. College isn’t for everyone and you can become a construction foreperson after your apprenticeship. Many employers want experience for these roles, not necessarily a degree. Get into a trade, take initiative at work to get involved in safety positions and continued training, and train other apprentices. That will also get you into management.

If I could add: while doing that CM degree and working them construction jobs: pick an industry or niche within such that requires quality control. If you're able to get the QC certs for your trade and also have that CM degree, then you'll never be out of work. Asset integrity is an underappreciated avenue of employment and may need more people soon. Most all of the older cats I know across my region are about to retire

CM degree is great. I got a job right out of school and worked through college. Sometimes I wish I did a civil engineering degree though. A lot more opportunities down the road if you want to work for a DOT or city. Even within big contracting firms the PE’s get promoted a little higher it seems.

It's actually funny that when I started going back to school a few years ago fresh off a two year stint with a demolition company, my local community college (of a large metropolitan area) was dropping the construction management degree program. I'll still be alright, and I'm probably better off with what I ended up graduating with, but that was incredibly surprising that they were dropping that program. That's one place that shouldn't have dropped a program like that.

Or get a trade and then get promoted to being a project manager. Far better and valuable. I have a trade, management experience in the field and have surpassed university graduates with degrees in management and construction. Currently a studying architect, you’re right, design/construction management has good prospects, and so too engineering (not just construction)- but proof of whatever skills you have learnt is just as valuable. Showing other people have trusted you and your professional opinion previously in the workplace.

@hughw5805
@hughw5805 Жыл бұрын
@@zachrojas2534 hmm architecture with a specialism has equal chances to get a good salary but it could be boring: e.g warehouse or data centre design. The stress will always be there with Arch but it comes with the kudos I guess. I am considering doing engineering management after my BArch degree perhaps, but really if you can get a company to support you while you complete a working masters that is the ideal situation in my opinion.

I have been a Restoration Technician for the past 3 years in South Florida with several IICRC Certifications (WTR/FSRT/AMRT/TCST) as well as Xactimate training and experience (which is the standard estimating tool we use in our industry) and I just think it’s time to get into CM. My current employer is also a GC so I have some experience managing subcontractors in both residential and commercial jobs. I just don’t know if my experience would be enough to get an Assistant Project Manager position at some decent Construction company. I also did 3 years of school, I went for international business but I had to stop school completely at the time and I had to get a full time job. I want to go back and finish my bachelor’s degree, fit it somehow in my schedule. Either finish my degree in finance and start a whole new career or finish it in CM which aligns more with the experience I already have. I’m 24 and planing to propose/start a family soon. So I just want to have a solid career with a good income potential in the long run. I’m also bilingual English and Spanish. Any recommendations are welcome and appreciated!! 👍🏼🤝
