Great video! I am now convinced that for the VAST majority of us (who don't regularly race crits) a bike like the Revolt is the best bike coupled with larger tires. The expensive/aero/stiff bikes that the pros use with skinny tires are good for them but not for the majority of people on this earth. Plus, a wider tire (like a 38mm) can provide much more confident handling that may actually make you go faster than a skinny 28mm so I'm not surprised by the results of the David's test/video. Yes, a light racing bike will be easier to go up hills but so can a lightweight gravel bike. I'm ditching my stiff race bike and opting for a good all-round gravel bike that still weighs around 19-20 lbs with a good set of 38mm tires.

I own and regularly ride a 2018 Defy Advanced, 2020 Defy Advanced Pro, 2019 Revolt Advanced and a 2019 TCR Advanced Pro. I have ridden all 4 fitted with 28mm Grand Prix 5000's on Hyper 50mm wheels(plus other identical wheelset/tire combos), the TCR simply kills the Revolt when it comes to holding speed on tight turns and in agility on winding roads. The Revolt also feels heavier on climbs, not drastic, but noticeable. On fast descents the Revolt feels more stable, the TCR slightly faster but much twitchier. The Defy lands in between and is a better all rounder, in my opinion, than the TCR or Revolt.

The longer distance would highlight any smaller differences which don't show up on the shorter test. To be honest unless you're racing seriously, I think a gravel bike with a swap of tyres / wheels is plenty good enough on the road. The main advantage to having two bikes is that it's nice to have something a bit more pristine for the road, whilst saving the gravel bike for the mud and slop.

I wonder: how long until the pros move to what I will call "super wide" tires? Obviously there are some types of racing for which traditional race tires are still best, but for some of the longer classics-style racing, I suspect someone is going to give 38s or 40s a try someday. I mean, in a sport where saving even few watts matters, how much faster might a pro go over the cobbles, and/or with how much less energy lost due to all the bumping? They will take enormous risks to get into the smoother gutters on the side, or to ride along the ridge in the middle of the road even when it is wet and they could slide down either side at any moment. Would high-end tubeless tires, including those classified as "gravel" tires, be faster? One of these young riders who is not totally caught up in "it's always been done this way" will at least try, I'd wager.

My experience with my Revolt is that a 38 versus a 43 provides livelier handling and more feedback with little penalty in rough stuff and is noticeably lighter but once the 43s are on there I am reluctant to swap them out because the ride is so smooth that a 5 hr ride leaves me still relatively fresh. Occasionally I consider trying a 35 or even 32 to do a similar test but then I decide I don’t care enough about speed to bother and if I did I would work on my aero tucked positioning more. @@davidarthur yes but does it really, with the same wheels and tyres and decent gearing. My gravel bike on semi-slicks is pretty much as quick as my road bike. In fact it weighs slightly less as it’s a 1x. I’ve done the same routes and they are very similar for average speed (within 1kph over 1-2 hours). The gravel bike only falls away a bit on fast group rides, and that’s my decision to run it 1x. Great video as always, Dave. This road gravel conversation keeps us all entertained as the gravel bikes keep getting more racy at one end of the curve, and then adding suspension at the other end. I own a Cube Nuroad gravel bike, got myself a 2nd wheelset for it. On the one wheelset i got road tyres (Schwalbe Pro One) and on the other i got my gravel tyres (Schwalbe G-One) . Riding the gravel bike feels awesome with road tyres to me. Its still pretty confy due to the geometry of the bike.To me it feels kinda better then a endurance road bike. (My bike is fitted with a road groupset).

I can basically confirm your findings. If you swapped the wheels over to the gravel bike, it would have been very close. I have a "ride from home after work route" I do a lot. I average between 1/2 to 1 mph slower on my gravel bike. It will vary a bit depending on the tires I had on my gravel bike. The Challenge TLR 42c were the slowest while the Specialized Pathfinder in a 38 was the closest by a lot. I've been tempted to try my road wheels on my gravel bike to see how different it would be.

That giant revolt with the wheels from the TCR... if that difference goes to a handfull of seconds, then you won't be dropped riding with it in a grupetto. With the huge added bonus of being able to throw down another set of really gravel wheels. Two bikes in one.

Chainrings, sprockets, and groupsets have a big effect on times and speeds, etc.

Of course frame geometry and gearing is relevant. But I here run slicks (30 rear 28 mm front) for road on my Ribble CX SL. I've also got a second set of wheels for off road with the same cassette and rotors with 42 mm knobblies. The road setup is almost as quick as my BMC Roadmachine on 28s or 25s! So I agree one bike with 2 sets of wheels is adequate for most riders.

Lots of 'I can't believe how close they are' comments, as if it's a shock. But the truth is, 99% of riders, on any decent reasonably comparable properly set up bike (and that includes bikes from at least the last 10 years), will not see much difference at all between a £500 2nd hand bike and a brand new £5k (or more) bike. Hype sells bikes..........

Good video. Yes, it would be interesting for me to see the result of the giant revolt VS with narrow tires. Because I will buy a light gravel bike with the intension to use it as well on the road.

Hi David. Do you still have this bike? I never have seen a subsequent review video. I bought one, in large part because of this video. I really like it, but have seen many reports of cracking seat tubes! Mine is still good after 1300 rough miles. I would like to know what you know about this issue. Did yours crack? Thanks. Your vids are really top notch!

I've heard the reports about the cracked seat tube but I've not had that happen on mine which I've still been riding. Final review is coming soon by the way

The Giant Revolt is an absolute all around bike. That said, head to head against the TCR on paved road, the Revolt doesn't stand a chance. The TCR has better power transfer through the frame and enables a more aero position for the rider. You should ensure your position on the bike and watts are exactly (or very close) the same too

Great comparison. Are those the 50mm Hyper wheels on the TCR? I'm really considering hitting the buy button on those. For my first carbon wheels on my BMC Teammachine would you recommend them 50mm Hypers? I've also been looking at the Hunt 44UD Carbon Spoke wheels.

get the hunts, ive got them on my tcr sl, with 28mm tubeless, fantastic performance and looks!

I'd say the hypers are hard to beat for the price. If you want an entry set of carbon wheels then get the hypers.

I got a Giant Revolt Adavanced 3 in 2021with a shimano 2x which is so disturbing off road. Now looking for a gravel bike with 1x (sram or campag) and carbon wheels and the choice is between 3T, Orbea and Canyon. The prices are aligned with Giant.

Thanks for this video David. Been struggling with the next bike question throughout winter. My road bike is great in dry conditions of summer but in a wet and gritty winter, looking for something with disc brakes and that can take some more of the winter road punishment has pushed me toward a gravel/all-road bike. This is really interesting and running slicks 32mm on the gravel bike may be the perfect answer. Gravel vs All-Road, any suggestions

This bike. Unless you're seriously racing having this bike and a spare "road" wheelset will be all you need. A few years back I did Ride London on a proper CX bike on Gravelking SKs - mainly because I ran out of time to change the wheelset in the car park. Was agony towards the end - neck and shoulder pain - due to the CX geo. This is way slacker/longer but will be plenty fast enough on the new wide slick tyres we've got - I mean they even do GP5000s in 32mm now,

Really wish someone would do a test like this but with the same road wheels and tyres on both bikes. There is loads of talk about 'quuver killers', and I'm sure there are loads of people like me wondering if a gravel bike could replace their 'race bike' without then struggling to keep up on the club run.

would be great to see the time difference at the same power output.

Would really like to know how the revolt goes on the road with road tyres on the rim, and another complete set of road wheels with a road orientated cassette.

I have a 2 by 10 with compact chain rings on my old gravel bike. I spend most of my time riding gravel, pavement and stone dust trails, with very little single track. As far as my riding goes , its very close to perfect

Just recently found your channel, loving it ❤️ Would love to hear your thoughts comparing this to the canyon grizl CF? Looking for a do it all bike, commuting, a bit of road and some longer gravel/bike packing. These two are quite similarly priced and at the top of the list so far.

Great video again Dave, it’s very helpful as I have the last years revolt the same model as that, and it’s been fantastic, but I spend 95% of my time on road with it. I’m in the need for a wee bit more speed, and I have been looking at either a pair of Zipp wheels with 32mm road tyres , instead I’d getting a road bike to complement the gravel bike, so test with narrower wheels and tyres would be great, and could save me getting into having two bikes. I worry about comfort on the TCR as I’m running 41psi front and 43psi rear on the revolt and gives great comfort and compliance and it’s been very good appt chasing that top Strava times and it’s handles excellent. But getting a 40mm tyre to last and not blister has been an issue, the Maxxis ones I have like road tyres as poor wearing and blister so easily, I’m not sure what else would be good, as they grip well on road dry, and wet and give good confidence when pushing hard, any good rolling 40mm road tyres I could swap out for?, thanks Derek

Great video, very useful comparison. I've been riding 35mm road tires for some time now, and just love them. I don't race, but for even my hardest efforts and fastest segments, they are every bit as fast, if not faster, than the 28s and 32s I have run previously. My next bike is a Fairlight Secan, a steel gravel bike recommended on this channel. I'm debating between 38s and 40s, and this video may seal it. For me, comfort is king. Not only better for long rides, but with no loss of speed. I ride crappy roads, so even if a wider tire was slightly slower in a sprint or through technical turns, minimizing the abuse I take keeps me strong for longer. Sincere appreciation for David's reviews. They have not only confirmed much of what I thought anyway, they have added to my thinking as well.
