The comments make me sad. I know that school sucks and we work towards something that ultimately doesn't have much of a future. I was majoring in biochemistry. I changed to Software Engineering. For us, future is very bright. If you do not know what you want to do. Software Engineering is the way to go.

I was a petroleum engineer that graduated with B.S. in WVU in may 2016. I never got a job and I gave up on the oil industry. I went back to school, doing a M.S. in mechanical engineering in 2 years in the automotive sector. I graduate in about 6 months and I already have one job offer lined up (about $70k/yr). To be honest, if you went to one of the top schools, such as Texas, A&M, LSU, OSU, or MIT, it's fine. However, if you are going to an average school, I would never suggest petroleum engineering, just go into mechanical.

I am not really surprised, oil and gas is a highly specialized field and the companies who do give out employment get very selective and they eventually reward only a single person out of a bunch of applicants. I got interview calls (also a petroleum engineer) from three multinational companies who only rewarded three individuals (one each)

What school? The top schools usually have 100% job placement. I'm a Computer Science major at ULL in Louisiana and this school is 15th nationally in PE with 100% job placement. I'm thinking about switching to PE. I wouldn't be graduating for at least another 2 years anyways.
@jacksonflowers24987 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did some research and the research indicates that the petroleum industry will grow in the coming years. Also, people will be retiring apparently. No offense, but I haven't heard of one good PE university out of Canada. Everything I see is mostly in Texas and Louisiana with some schools in the midwest. IDK what a CS degree from ULL will get me...it's nationally ranked in CS but not high, but it's the best school I can go to since I'm limited to Louisiana. I just don't wanna be stuck making 50k a year being a useless code junkie for the rest of my life.

the petroleum industry will be business as usual. vehicle fuel is only about 10% utilisation from the industry itself. Do you notice that electric vehicle is heavier that normal cars, therefore lots of bitumen products required for road maintenance and re-structuring

I'm a petroleum engineer graduate that didn't get a job in the downturn. Let me tell you straight up, if you are able to do the long hours, you will be awarded. Petroleum engineering has one of the most lucrative salaries in the field. However you will have to work a lot and if you every have family/friends, they will have to take the backseat. Most of the petroleum engineers work in the 7/7, 14/14, 30/30 shift. Meaning, you work for 7 days and then off for 7 days, 14 days on and 14 days off. During the 7,14,30 days, you would be working a MINIMUM of 10 hours per day, but averages out to 12-14 hours/day. It is hard work and you will regret it if you aren't willing to live at the drilling site. During this downturn, if you can't get into one of the top PE schools such as Texas Austin, A&M, Oklahoma, LSU or MIT. Don't even bother. If you have no clue what you want to do, but engineering, pick mechanical engineering, since you could go to work in the oil fields in that field, too.

Trouble with PE is that it's well out of date and based on 1950's teaching , has very poor basis of approximations and is still stuck with Oilfield Units, Barrels, Ft etc. PE needs a good reboot using SI and sound engineering fundamentals integrating all disciplines. Reservoir Engineering is a black box and full of anoraks , If it was based on real mechanical engineering principles the Industry would be different. The industry is full of siloed camps that hardly talk to each other Drillers , Completion Engineers and Subsurface and Geo guru's.

@666yaoz6 жыл бұрын
Very low chance. If you have networks, it is possible. However, the oil industry is very competitive right now. Supply of engineers > # of jobs.
@fdk70146 жыл бұрын
No it's not. Fossil fuels is a dying market and thus the future need for PE's is limited. In about 10 years most cars sold will be electric so you can understand what that will do for oil demand. Likewise, other forms of transport is moving away from oil too although it may take a few more years. Fracking is killing coal but cheap renewables will soon kill fracking. A new generation of solar technology is about to come on the market which will cost a fraction of today's already dirt cheap solar. Energy storage is a business in its infancy but with huge potential, that will help enormously with killing fossil fuels. Why do you think oil-rich countries like Saudi Arabia or Qatar is betting big on renewable energy? They could use their own oil but they go with RE, not because they care about the environment but because it's cheaper. That should tell you something.
@jonathanjeffrymulyana43904 жыл бұрын
Vehicle only made up about 30% of oil consumption. Gas is complementary to renewables as peaker plants.
