From your very good account of how it feels to actually use it, I think that for me the one advantage that I would appreciate was the new feeling of much greater openness you get when the top of the steering wheel has been “chopped off”. I am old enough to remember when shifting went from the floor to the steering wheel. I also remember when shifting to drive Park reverse went to buttons on the dashboard or in the middle of the wheel. I remember how many people thought they were both stupid ideas along with the idea of moving your headlight dimmer from the floor to the column. We have all adjusted to it. I think there is a yoke because it will be easier to slide or pack away once we have full self driving in every car. What do you think?

Most of the time if I use the top of the wheel, it’s done without conscious thought. If the top isn’t available you typically adjust somewhat passively without much thought.

Enjoyed your frank, honest reviews from two drivers. Next month, my ms should arrive and I’ll be stuck with a yoke, whether I like it or not. While it does look futuristic and different, it doesn’t solve any problem, especially in model 3 & Y. You could claim in the S, it’s binnacle display is more visible. But, we’ve had round steering wheels for over 100 years and no one complained about impaired visibility. I think your car would look better with a white yoke matching interior.

@@marvin-rollinusa7962 I love my yoke and it's a real attention getter. After using it for a week, it's not very difficult. But, what strongly dislike is the tiny horn button. One large consideration is that the Yoke on the Model S they did some redesign to ensure the airbag deploys correctly. So you may be sacrificing safety with this aftermarket Yolk that hasn't had the correct testing. The upper portion of the steering wheel is part of the support for how the airbag deploys on the normal steering wheel.

Reserved judgement on the yoke until I had a good look at my car. All the advantages you state can be achieved by lowering the steering wheel. The stock wheel does not come over the dash and I can easily rest both arms on the door and center rest. If looks is all people want and you don't have a heated wheel, remove the wheel, peel back the "leather" above the "T", cut the top off, round metal and restitch the leather. Just a thought. I have not seen or heard of this being done. Much cheaper than what the after market retailers want.

I went from a Raven S to a Plaid S just over a year ago (rather abruptly when someone driving the wrong way on a freeway hit me head on, but that is another story); I found the transition from wheel to yoke surprisingly easy. I got used to it within the first ten minutes of driving, having figured a technique for sharp turns by placing my hand under the yoke on the side rotating upwards and rotating the yoke as a lever, while temporarily releasing the hand on the other side and holding it ready beside the yoke, to grab hold again when I turn it back to its center position. I was not that worried about the yoke form factor; I was more concerned about getting used to buttons in place of stalks, but that, too, was not that difficult a transition, and no worse than all of the other brain-recalibrations I've had to do over the last decade in going from gas cars to Teslas and other EVs already. The signal-in-mid-turn does not really seem to come up that often; I've signaled a turn with a partially tilted yoke a few times, but not right in the middle of a sharp wheel turn. Though the S is now offered with an optional traditional wheel (though still without stalks), I would recommend the yoke unless one is overly intimidated by the shape, as the overall interior layout and dash was designed with a yoke in mind. Seeing and driving the S answered a lot of questions I had about how the Cybertruck will work, especially now that a photo of a later prototype showed it now sporting the same yoke as the S and even a similar-looking dashboard display in addition to the main screen.

GREAT REVIEW! One question, I bought a yoke at the Hansshow site. What was really nice about this was how you used the core triangle harness of all the attached components from the original Tesla steering wheel, WITHOUT HAVING TO REMOVE THEM AND RECONNECT THEM. What is somewhat scary is using the ones that were not made or OEM by Tesla. What is your position about not being able to use the core harness and detaching everything???

Nice Trevor! Congrats and I too have been thinking of the for some time. I just drove a brand new Model S LT with the Yoke Wheel and I had the same thoughts as you did. I am a 10 &2 for 50% and a one-hand on the wheel relaxed for the other 50%. However, it really did not take me long to get used to it...a minute or two really! The turn signal buttons do take some getting used to, especially when doing a roundabout as I usually signal into one and out of one. But it does work. I may to take the plunge and get one of these as what sells it for me , is the additional visibility you get by removing the upper half of the wheel! And I know for my wife, she looked at it and that was the first thing she commented was wow, I would be able to see over the front a lot better!

Older video but I rented a Model X Plaid for several days and the very first thing I would do is swap to a real wheel. Hated the yoke...I drive 9 and 3, 10 and 2 is old and incorrect. But that aside, from a performance perspective the yoke is a joke. There is nowhere for your thumbs to really grab onto during high performance driving. It has nubs on the top but it's so easy for your hands to slip past those. Hence the regular wheel installed on the Unplugged Performance Pikes Peak Model S Plaid. I enjoyed the video though so thank you! Like you said not for everyone....the open feeling though I admit is really nice!

I love the looks of them, but not enough to ditch my stock steering wheel, and here's why. Formula racers with yokes are basically able to go lock to lock without having to flip the yoke over entirely. That's the part that really bugs me. I don't know if the Plaid has different steering calibration that prevents yoke flip in tight turning positions, but this is the one thing that is holding me back from wanting to order and install one.

What you're talking about is called progressive steering. Something that Tesla could implement very easily through a software update for cars equipped with an OEM yoke like the S&X. I've never found it to be a problem in day to day use. Not recommended on the track but who does that regularly?

I’m seriously considering one to go with my Hansshow steering wheel centred screen which is awaiting fitting. Hansshow do another yoke steering wheel but it is way more expensive with all the fittings so you dont have to transfer them. Looks nice. I do like the extra bottom space that I would use for hand placement. I have my wheel with a white wrap and so glad that can get switched over with buttons. I drive 9 and 3 a lot, rare I have my hand on the top. A lot I also one hand at 9 with my thumb or a couple fingers in the top crease so the nub would still feel ok. I don't often do the full one hand turn but that's ok. I used to drive with right hand at the bottom of my older car, now it's my left at the 7-8 position for AP not to nag with the wheel higher. I had some issues with my posture that when getting the 3 would cause me upper back pain. So even if this is weird I'll get used to it. I don't really care for buying things from Aliexpress and I'd have to consider if I really want to break loose the wheel and torque it back down for a yoke.
