I used the engine oil 084 with testors white contour putty on gears for a bridge kit gloped on the putty let it dry covered it with the oil and it made the putty look like thick grease.

I love AKs stuff they are very well priced and amazing quality. I have several of their enamel paints, pigments and tons of their acrylics.

My one wish for AK Interactive acrylics is that they release some more vibrant colours, I know its not their market as such (they seem to focus more on realistic colours),but I love their paints (obviously I haven't used all brands but of the ones I have used: Pro Acryl, Citadel, Vallejo, G.S.W, Scale 75 and Kimera- AK are definitely my favourite) and despite their huge range, I often find they lack the more vibrant colours I like. AK give me the nicest finish on my models, I'm quite new to painting so it might be a mis-use of the other paints I've tried on my part but I've found that I get quite a gritty finish with some of the Pro Acryl paints, I don't really like the smell of G.S.W paints and they often seem a bit more gel like, Scale 75 are nice but I often get more of a satin finish with those, although I've been told I over thin them and that's probably the cause. That's another reason I like AK paint; they're easier to use and less particular with how I thin them.

Do you fix the loose pigments like the steel and rust in some way, i.e. varnish?. I use AK stuff quite a bit now, mainly their 'Diorama' effects, after having such good results with the 'Swamp Goo'. While it would be possible to replicate the effects of these more cheaply (with Tetrion, sand, and so on), they are very convenient and look very good indeed (especially 'Rough Terrain' and 'Concrete'). While on the subject of cheap alternatives, I wonder if powdered graphite might give a similar result to the steel effect?.

Hi Parazatico, I know there is pigment fixers out there, but to be honest, I have not found a situation that warranted it yet. I have not had any issues with pigments coming off or altering with age. Open to ideas and not ruling it out for the future though! Very much agree that it is a trade off between convenience, cost and quality of result. Especially when working on larger scale projects, especially like dioramas! Interesting idea about the graphite. I may well have a play with that

Graphite is a very good idea. My kids have some pencils that came with broken innards so I'm going to try grinding them and using them on my models 👍🏻

For what its worth I have found that regular tile grout mixed with cheap acrylic paint from high street craft shops and then with kids play sand mixed in creates a very good facsimile of the textured terrain products out there. I would advise mixing the paint in to grout that way if you need to drill it, its already the colour of the rest of the ground.

I should have also mentioned Ive found stippled on grout is good for really heavy corrosion of steel (think tanks lying at the bottom of the ocean for 70 years lol) Ive also used talc literally blown onto a model with hairspray and and then a wash of rust ect applied, Ive also used bulk bought pigments from art suppliers that I have found are pretty much the same as the branded stuff you buy just cheaper and I find that AKs sand and gravel fixer is great for fixing heavy deposits of it down. Hope this is of interest 🙂
