In 2018 I took the Zephyr from Martinez to Chicago...57 total hours. I had the same roomette and could not even consider "NOT" having my own room! It is a must for privacy, comfort, sleep, and changing clothes.

I am glad the Army and backpacking taught me how to sleep anywhere. I can sleep like the dead in Coach, never mind a Roomette. I hear so many lament how the motion of the train prevents them from sleeping.

As a seafarer, I get that, I'm used to the rolling motion of the ship but when I've brought others along, I hear the same things. Glad you're able to capitalize on the train for some added sleep!

I took a roomette from St. Louis to San Antonio for a 31 hour train ride and it was pretty cool to say the least. The one major issue was that due to the storms that inundated East Texas, I had to ride a coach bus from Fort Worth to Temple and then about 45 or 50 miles from San Antonio, we had to wait our turn to move on as there was a ginormous train with about 15 to 20 cars rolling on the tracks heading northbound. We got to San Antonio at a quarter before 11pm which was only a half hour late.

On a previous train trip, we diverted due to flooding, so it's not unheard of. Sounds like aside from that bus ride you had a great trip. Thanks for sharing.

I've taken 3 long trips lately, and curled up in my coach seat. (I'm small!) A roommette was what, $200 or 300 more? Even with free meals, I could think of other ways to spend that extra money when at my destination. I can eat (and sit in the booths) at the cafe area. I usually spend most of my time there or in the observation car. And isn't a "bedroom" an extra THOUSAND dollars? But anyway, thanks for the ride-along! I LOVE train travel! Remind people there are no long waits, long lines, baggage xrays, luggage inspections, etc., and weather very seldom cancels trips, as it does with flights.

Depends on length of travel. For a day trip of a trip ending in the middle of the night, I wouldn’t do it. End to end on the Zephyr? Definitely take the sleeping car.

It's certainly nice having extra personal space.

I wish it was this nice on the LSL. Always crowdwd, and I only needed to get off at Buffalo and not NY/Boston

There are certainly benefits to the two deck superliners over the single level viewliners

Are there still mask protocols on Amtrak (required or recommended)? Thanks!

When I took this trip in February, there weren't any mask protocols.

Did you get your bid on this roomette

When I went to book tickets roomette prices were reasonable so I booked the roomette from the onset.

Roomette tickets come with access to three meals in the dining car as well as an alcoholic beverage for supper.
