Is ARMS Really THAT Bad?

In the last Nintendo Direct, it was announced that the next character to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would be from Nintendo's fighting game ARMS. Many were disappointed in such a widely disliked game getting the slot. Today, I want to look back at the game and see if it was really THAT bad.

Before I watch this, it's not a bad game, but it just didn't have a lot of content for me to justify spending $60. In fact, the characters are the most unique and awesome designs I've seen from Nintendo this gen. I had fun with that trial they did a couple weeks back.

Devilluke ラム It has NOTHING to do with people being bias towards realistic designs. These days we have several fighting games with characters with crazy designs like blazblue cross tag battle,guilty gear strive,granblue fantasy versus,and other non realistic fighting games, and alot of people likes those games,and characters. Arms on the other hand has bellow averege,or averege designs at best,with characters that has almost no dept what so ever in terms of personality. Also most of the cast of characters never says something other than their own names. People also mentioned Skull Girls,and Darkstalkers as examples of crazy good designs,execept the design of those characters has way more depth than what arms does. I myself don't really like,or dislike arms characters,but saying that everyone that don't like the designs are bias towards realistics chars,or Playstation,is not true

One of the things I always liked about ARMS is how neutral heavy it is, there aren't a ton of huge punish combos like most fighting games so it really came down to just being the best at spacing and ironic to its name, being good at footsies lol.
@NepheneeGyattRizz
@NepheneeGyattRizz 4 жыл бұрын
Ye. Fair point but for people like me the most enjoyable part of many fighting games is optimising your punish combo's and your advantage state. Arms doesn't have an advantage state and because of that it sorta makes the skill gap between a new player and a decent player very small.

Yeah, hard disagree with two major opinions in this video: the character designs in Arms are legitimately excellent, and the gameplay at a competitive level is surprisingly interesting (Having sunk several hundred hours into both Smash Ultimate and Arms, Arms is legit the better competitive fighting game, IMO). The game could have used more content, agreed, and I hope they add some more in game mechanics in a sequel - some sort of combo system would be neat, and flesh out the story more, stuff like that. But, it’s got more going for it than most people think.

Me and my friends would usually play with 4 people (2v2), grabs were horrible in that. Even if you yourself were able to block grabs, your partner would always get caught in them, and then there was that annoying mechanic were if your teammate gets thrown, you get thrown too, and then you’re vulnerable. Especially if the matches are just grab spamming.

The ARMS Community says “Hello!” I actually have over 1,500 Hours In ARMS (I make ARMS Tech Videos on my channel, so I Lab). To me, ARMS is like a Sport, like Tennis, it’s a simple concept, but it’s about mastering the Technique, Timing, and Knowledge of the Game. There’s actually a lot to learn: -Insta-Countering (Guard-Canceling) -Ducking under punches -Chip Damage to Shield Break -Weaken opponent’s Arms to break their shield easier, or deactivating their Arms -Farming Rush -Whiff Grab Tech -Boxing (Clashing Arms) -1-2-3 Hit Combos -Teleport Dashing -EMP Waves -Shockwave Deflects -Short Dashes/Hops vs Long Dashes -Dragon Cancels and Dragon Pokes -The width between the shoulders of the characters being different, so you need different curvature with your Arms -Healing Mind Games -Invisibility Mind Games -Pillar Mind Games -Misango Totem Mind Games -Actress Aura (Slowing down Punches) -Distance coming into play -Extension Speed vs Retraction Speed -Rush Deflecting -Arm Weight Classes -Arm Weight Classes in Rush Mode being different from in Normal Play -Knowing when to Rush, and when not to Rush. -Arm Girth Differences between Characters -Unblockable Moves -Yabuki Combos (Bouncing off Trampolines into Rush) -Widening Grabs by have Arms with different Homing Attributes on each Arm -Chaining -Confirming -Rush confirms -Barq confirms -Explosion confirms -Elevation Tricks and Manipulation -The thousands of different Arm and Fighter Combinations -I could keep going. A group called CasualARMS hosts online community events for ARMS every single week to this day. www.casualarms.net Most competitive play now is in Friendlies set up by Discord and such. Most Pros don’t play Ranked anymore, once they hit max bar. Also, from a lot of people that I’ve heard from, even KZbinrs who aren’t necessarily fans of ARMS, don’t mind ARMS being in Smash. Most think it’s a great fit, and were surprised that it wasn’t in the base game.

In my experience playing in ranked around the launch of this game, what makes the fighting more competitive is the movement options and strategy found by mixing different fighters with different arsenals rather than any combo system or special inputs. Love ARMS, I have a lot of fun with it personally. The biggest issue ARMS has, I think, is how quickly Nintendo abandoned the game. If they added some more maps, characters, game modes, and "boxing gloves", I think more people would still be playing it today. Hell, they released more dlc for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe kinda out of no where. So why not ARMS?

There's also the issue that the world is interesting, but there's little lore or stories of the characters out of the ring. I think that if that Dark Horse comic book came out on time, like in late 2018, early 2019, ARMS would of been a bigger interest. The only thing we have outside the game is a Free Comic Book Day teaser. Given how many other things have been delayed, it's no doubt pushed back again. Really hope Ian Fylnn can shed more detail behind the scenes.

I do think Nintendo should permanently lower the price. They have it in sale for like $20-$30 every other month. They might as well just keep it that price. My younger Sister was in 5th grade when Arms came out and her friends did want to play it everytime they came over, so I do agree it's bit of a party game. The main complaint everyone says they have with the game is there isn't enough variety, especially in Single player content. The second complaint is that it's extremely tedious to unlock all the Arms for every character.

Arms is horrible. It’s fun, but the bots get so many unfair advantages. I’m not just saying this because I’m actual sh*t at the game, but I’ve literally looked at the speed of your character compared to the bot, and it’s legit unfair. I was in a match one time and the bot was pulling out the shield and putting it away FASTER THAN A QUARTER OF A SECOND TO DODGE MY ATTACK. Whilst you have time to read a 5 page essay before you are able to attack again after shielding. Some of the bots also had tiny as* intervals. The second they unshielded, their arms were already at my face. And before I can even throw something at them, their arms are already back at their character and blocking whilst my arms take 3 seconds to get back to me. Don’t even get me started with Hedlock.

I've had loads of fun with it before some of the more meatier updates, and even then I felt like the modes available made it worth the purchase. The continued content added just made it better and felt like part of the appeal. The only aspect of ARMS that I felt at all ripped off by was the fact that updates stopped just as the lore of the world was really clicking into place. I'd been foolishly hoping for an octo expansion type story dlc, I'd even pay for it, but I guess that's off the table.

My and friend and i loved playing together so we decided to play online. But we could never enjoy it to the fullest because of the stupid rubber band mechanic. Having a 2v2 match while your movement is limited and tied to your second player is just a bad game design. After a while, we stopped playing because of that.

ARMS is legitimately good and fun, but I think the thing that holds it back for me is that electric type arms are kinda busted. Maybe I'm not qualified to talk on this point since I don't keep track of the arms meta anymore, but from my experience, electric arms are kinda busted compared to other arms because if you charge them and land a hit, your opponent can't do anything so it's a free punish. So why choose any other type, when you can most likely have the arm you want, but with electricity, so you can stun your opponent for free punishes? I just feel if electric arms either were heavily nerfed, or removed entirely, it'd encourage more experimentation and diversity in arm types. But I know people are gonna just be like "well get good and don't get hit", but that's just what I think
@ARMSStudyLab
@ARMSStudyLab 4 жыл бұрын
Not many competitive players actually use Electricity. One disadvantage Electric Arms have, is that they are generally the slowest Arms in the game. They may be powerful when a Charged Hit connects, but actually connecting the hits before the opponent can dodge away or counter, may be a problem. The ‘Sparky’ Glove Arm is one of the least used Glove Arms for this reason. It’s really slow. Plus the fact that if an unarmored opponent jumps, the Electricity doesn’t take affect. The opponent just gets knocked to the ground without any shock. It also doesn’t deal as much damage as other Elements. In fact, every Electric Arm has at least one glaring weakness. ‘Thunderbirds’ are really the only more frequency used Electric Arm.

ARMS I agree is definitely not worth $60 but I still had a lot of fun with it personally. If anything I love the ARMS roster of fighters, their designs I feel are very fresh for Nintendo. I do think their inclusion in Smash feels very forced but I do admit I think Nintendo really tried with ARMS. They just failed in execution in many different ways.

I agree with you on the price. $60 was asking for to much while offering to little, like 1-2 Switch (which shoud've been $15). I would have easily bought it at $30. I also agree that the characters are kinda bland for the most part, though my biggest gripe is how every fighter could use every ARM (don't know if this ever got changed), it made the characters even less unique. 10:14 I never bought it, but played the hell out of those Test-Punches before it launched and had a lot of fun with it. I don't think it's a bad game, just a not very content rich game, especially if you were to ever compare it to Nintendo's other party fighter, Smash Bros.

Arms is probably the most understated Switch game. It's a game that looks and runs perfectly both in TV and handheld mode, and also plays perfectly with split joycons motion controls and with traditional controls. It also has the Nintendo signature traits. It is very simple and intuitive but it also has a lot of depth. It also has a very strong and unique character in terms of presentation (visuals, art stile, music etc.) and in terms of gameplay.

Ok, not being sarcastic, genuinely curious, what other kind of content would you add? I'd be all for new additions to the game, but when I look at what comes with the game as of the last batch of dlc we have: 15 fighters. seems decent for the first entry in the series. 2, 3, and 4 player matchups some interesting mini games ranked mode casual (party) mode and some of the more basic fighting game modes (like fighting 100 enemies) The campaign mode could definitely be fleshed out, but honestly the average fighting game's idea of a story mode is usually just more of the same with flashy cutscenes. I guess you could have 'objectives' like defeating an enemy under a shorter time limit or a mode where you can only use certain ARMS, but I don't know if that would be enough to bring in newer players.

You see so much of "ARMS is dead" and "ARMS is shallow" and "ARMS shouldn't be played competitively" but it's all said by people who have little-no experience with the game. The sheep normies jumped on the ARMS hate train before it even released, and the people leading those sheep were people who played the demo and didn't immediately see the game's depth and strategy. ARMS is unlike any other fighting game, so if you're familiar with traditional fighters you will have no idea where to look when it comes to depth. Instead of actually trying to find it, they just claimed it didn't exist. In my opinion, ARMS is a phenomenal game and I much prefer it to Smash. I cannot play Smash for more than about an hour without boring myself and switching back to either ARMS or Splatoon. I don’t know how you can think the character designs are bland. These are some of the most creative and original fighters I’ve ever seen. A skateboarding snake livestreamer? A green goo monster? A ramen dragon girl? These are bland characters? I can understand thinking Spring Man isn’t super unique, but the rest of the cast is crazy. Just my thoughts.

Hey so I'm a big fan of traditional fighting games, and the depth is one of the reasons for that. I spent about 30-40 hours on Arms and ended up selling it in favor of getting FighterZ. So my genuine question is, where does the depth in Arms come from?
@levilanzl2389
@levilanzl2389 4 жыл бұрын
@@WaxxyVanderquail The main aspect of course revolves around how you combine your chosen gloves with your character's attributes. Lola Pop with a funchuck and biffler can play VERY differently from Master Mummy with a megaton and slapamander. I main Lola Pop, and one time this guy was killing me with a boomerang glove. What I ended up doing was using my air shield to: dodge away from his left arm, absorb the blow from his boomerang arm, and attack his right side as the boomerang arm took a moment to retract. I lost to him a lot after that, but it FELT so good to seem him struggle for a match or two.

My take on ARMS: While ARMS had potential and it wasn't a bad game, the gameplay was kind of uninteresting to me. It had the same appeal as a mobile game to me, where I could play it for a few minutes to an hour and put it down and even then, I have played better mobile games in comparison. I tried the ARMS trial on Switch and back then I would've bought the game on a sale back then, but in a time when the likes of SSBU, Dragon Ball FighterZ and the BlazBlue games exist on Switch, I'd rather play those over ARMS because again, the gameplay in ARMS is fundamentally uninteresting to me. Great concept, ho-hum execution imo.

As someone with over 1000 hrs with the game, I gotta disagree with what you say about the game not having too much complexity. ARMS is a 3d arena fighter, so comparing it to traditional fighting games is kinda pointless. There are many hidden layers to the game's basic mechanics that only those who seek to improve will take notice of. I'm not gonna be a blind fan and say ARMS is flawless. In fact, I completely agree with people when they say the game was lackluster at launch. A proper story mode would have been a welcome addition! I also get the impression you didn't check out the multiple things that were added to the game since launch (since you didn't mention them in your video). Things like tournament mode, Party Crashes (online events and arguably what most consider ARMS at its best), badges (achievements), gallery artwork, and the intricate lore of the game. People also complain about the low amount of characters but forget the notorious amount of ARMS + character combinations available. In my opinion, ARMS is not a bad game but also not a perfect one. It is a game with concepts that have room for improvement. It's also a bit too much to expect a game in a sub-genre of a niche genre to be a system seller. The game did well sales-wise (2.47 million copies) for a new IP. If you didn't like ARMS' gameplay that's fine, it's just not your type of game/cup of tea. Anyways, those were my two cents.
