I think it stems from some article that criticised AsDA for the bright yellow labels as being a mark of poverty. Well, shock, horror, many are living in poverty! I too tried them and found them to be excellent, one or two where not to my taste, but that is all. I have no problem wandering to the checkout with a basket full of ‘Wally Labels,’ I think it shows how smart I am. I don’t give a damn what others have in their basket, so why should anyone be bothered what is in mine.

I think one of the best value meals you can make are chunky soups/casseroles. I remember when I as in my 20s working in a factory on 2-10 shifts and living alone in a flat near the factory, an old foreman took me under his wing and told me to by a slow cooker. He said to fill it with budget tins of veg, potatoes, chopped tomatoes etc, some chicken, some dried herbs and a veg or chicken stock and you will have a healthy meal for the whole week. Put it on before the shift and it will be finished when you get home. Then bag and freeze the rest the morning after when it is cooled. Tonight, 30 years later, I'm eating a soup made in an Instant Pot from tinned veg, potatoes and tomatoes etc with Farmfoods frozen diced chicken and its wonderful, its healthy and it costs pennies per portion.

@@ImakHunt69 it annoys me when people say they can't afford to buy food, when all they do is buy the pre made ready meals that works out costing a lot more and you get less. At least with home cooked food you know what's in it. You can actually make a slow cooker chilli con carne and rice or a slow cooker Bolognese sauce to put with some spaghetti for under a fiver and it'll feed a family of four with good portion size, and possibly leftovers, so they won't go hungry.

What people don't realise is that some of the essential range is actually branded products with a yellow label on instead. Two that immediately come to mind are: the tinned corned beef and the porridge oats. A third is their curry sauce, that's the same as Asda own brand katsu curry sauce at, at least, 1/3 the price.

I've always bought the value brands, no matter what my employment status is. What some people don't realise is, Asda rebranded their value range from Smart Price to Just Essentials. There has been stigma to the colour of the packaging showing people are poor. This was down to an article somewhere. It's food at the end of the day whether you pay 25p for a tin of beans or £1.20. People that don't have a lot of money will go for the cheaper options available. I remember Tesco value brands being in blue and white striped packaging.

In the US, nearly every off brand is processed at the same plants the name brands are, & all that's different are the labels & prices before being shipped out. These off-brands are getting harder to find, tho. Food Lion is a midrange grocery store chain that has its own brand, + good sales on everything. Lately, however, the no name brands & sale items are harder to find. There's a good amt of name brand foods, but clearly ppl aren't spending extra for it! FYI I live in North Carolina in the southeast, & we're about to run out of diesel, accor to the govt. They're saying less than 25 days. Truckers can't deliver anything w/o it, + school busses, farm equipment, & more. It'll be a catastrophe, yet our politicians act like they're just observers & are mad, too! Why, when they're the ones causing all this? Ppl here aren't concerned about brand names anymore, unless maybe if you're super wealthy! Pretty soon, there & everywhere, snobbery will disappear, & there'll be millions in the UK & here more than willing to eat no name brand foods! I guarantee it!

Another American in the comments, I agree with you. I’ve been on a budget for so long… now a fixed monthly pension. I got over labels a long time ago, for the very reason you stated. I look for my best value wherever and whenever I can. I buy my meat on the sales and offers….

You would be hard pressed to find a US politician willing to get in the way of big business making profits on price gouging. They would all be on the far left of the Democrat party. Or as the rest of the world sees it 'the centrist block'. Oh and btw Walmart bought ASDA over 20 years ago. How is Walmart for cheap prices in the US as I have never been there?
@marthaross6301
@marthaross6301 Жыл бұрын
@@gm2407 Walmart USED to have SOME cheaper prices…. Lately not so much. Plus their produce has been really ehhhh the last several months. Presently, I find my local Kroger (large multi named grocery chain) and Aldi to be the better prices. Followed by a few local small family owned grocery for meat sales. Then Meijer (another chain) I shop the sales flyers for loss leaders and buy one get one especially for meat protein. When our local farmers markets are happening- I buy as much as I can there. I’ve gone back to pressure and WB canning to make my life better. That then allows me to be taking advantage of best $$$ out there.

Tilly, without you sharing these hauls we wouldn’t of probably tried them. Mostly because we shop at Aldi and occasionally Lidl. We’ve been having a lot of the just essentials range this last fortnight and have been impressed. Yesterday we had the breaded fish. It was lovely. We used to have the bird eye seed crusted fish at £3 for a box of 2. For our family that was £6 just for the fish without sides etc. We were so impressed I got another 2 boxes. These ranges are the difference between some families eating and not. The savings we made this week buy buying a lot of this range meant we were able to go to Lidl yesterday and do a food bank shop. We spent £41.03 and got LOADS Incl nappies, toiletries and household items. We wouldn’t of been able to get so much if we hadn’t of bought so much Just Essentials stuff. My family will eat well and we could give to others. I do not understand why people would shame others who buy cheaper brands. Like you, we do not care what people think. You are an inspiration to many, including me. I’m glad I found your channel a few weeks ago. I always look forward to your videos. Thank you for sharing 😊 xx

Hello Avalon lady, keep up the good work. You are wise to be frugal. Who is the fool? The person that keeps spending, or the sensible person who has more money for themselves?! The ASDA company would not be able to sell value food if it was poisonous. The branded labels are more because of the name of the label. I have studied food hygiene and have a certificate to prove it. HOWEVER, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PROVE YOURSELF TO TOXIC PEOPLE. I WISH YOU EVERY SUCCESS!

We do - Great Valuw brand at Walmart, most grocery stores have their own brands, Costco, Sam's Clubs, BJ's. I'd say Aldi, but I'm boycotting that chain bc they'll be selling food made w/bugs 1st there, mainly cricket flour. There's already a massive cricket plant in Canada that I've heard about. Also, I've learned that their exoskeletons aren't good for ppl at all! There are certain things we shouldn't eat in our regular duets, & that's one of them. We'll see deaths skyrocket more than they already are bc of the ouchie, which I'd their plan!

The Essentials range is excellent. From 58p pizza’s, Italian hard cheese (great alternative to Parmesan) 28p tins of Toms & so much more. I had to take off my blinkers & try them. Not all the range is perfect, but we’ll worth trying with an open mind. ASDA & other supermarkets deserve some credit for these ranges.

Tilly, my husband works with apprentices and visits them in their place of work. He goes to a certain food company which I will not name, but in said factory they pack the same product in different boxes for different supermarkets! Most of it is all the the same just different packaging, (some does slightly more sugar etc) and with the exception of the specialty brands which do have a few more added ingredients…..and I have tried the JE range and and like pretty much everything I have tried so far. Great job and keep it up!

Well done Tilly. Any food is a great alternative to real hunger . I don’t think people who criticise the quality of the food have ever put their bodies to the test-like experiencing long term hunger, and having the “opportunity” to find out how much physical activity or mental activity they can endure on a bowl of plain porridge etc. When you aspire to eat “pure” food you can become scared of cheaper food-fear can be quite a motivator in getting you to consume food that costs 10 times more than the cheap and basic foods available.

If the choice comes down to eating or starving, be grateful you can eat. Store brand foods and name brand foods in any and all stores worldwide are made in the SAME factory. Only the labels are different...so why is saving money to purchase a less expensive product bad? At HEB, a grocery chain in Texas, they actually make a superior line of products for their store brand.

I did a haul at Asda the other day and bought to try alot of the "Yellow stuff" some i liked and some of it was a bit "mer" i will eat it but will not rebuy, and sadly some is going in the bin, and i hate food waste! But some of it is more than a bit strange. My top tip is to make sure you take your specs/glasses and look at what is in the ingredients with things you dont know! It was my silly fault for buying brown sauce that was made from Tomato paste didnt contain any vinegar or date paste or tamarind. The Husband said it tasted OK to him, but i bought some at Lidl today still budget we now have his and his brown sauce. Its why i like food reviews helps people know what to try :)

Absolutely right to check the ingredients and then you can make an informed decision as to wether to buy them or not... and I there are a few items in this brand, that our family don't like and we won't buy again, but as I said, it is all personal choice and tastes ... I like the Batts range of sauces from Lidl.

I've no idea what is wrong with some folk. I was a food professional, and if the food is a different quality when you want to do your best, finest presentation it is one thing, but do these people have no idea? Why doesn't everyone understand that we need to lay in as much food as we can? Why would they watch you if they don't get it? Now, I admit that I have picked up some name brands of some products, always on sale but they may be more than 'off-brands' because they are certified gluten-free, as one of my sons is highly sensitive to gluten, but I have plenty of other, cheaper ones for everyone else. I am so glad that you are not giving in to these fools who make unthinking comments. There are plenty of pop-up prepper channels where people who have no idea what they are doing are trying to put away a lot of boxes pastries, etc. that they could go and pick on!

I think the people making the mean comments may have researched the ingredients in prossessed foods and may mean well but aren't putting themselves across in the right way. I've researched a great deal on the foods we eat and its very shocking what is allowed to go into our foods. It's not the calories, sugar or salt. It's the chemicals put in to preserve, colour and enhance flavour that people need to be concerned about. Don't read the government funded studies, instead look for the independent ones. These foods are great to stop you going hungry but have little to none nutritional value. Unfortunately the times we're living through right now, we need to prioritise what's more important. Starving or consuming products known to cause diseases. It's a difficult situation.
