We all know autosteer in a tractor is super handy, but is it really as good as people make it out to be? In this video Daddy Cornstar covers the greatest investment our farm made this year; our AgLeader OnTrac3 guidance system.
Daddy Cornstar used to be completely opposed to having autosteer in his tractors, but now he supports it 100%. What changed his mind? You'll have to watch the video to find out.
Daddy Cornstar gives highlights on everything he likes about autosteer, as well as the things he did not like. You will get to see plenty of live action commentary of our AgLeader autosteer system in the field.
Daddy Cornstar is a fresh supporter to the GPS world and he hopes he can help farmers who are on the fence about purchasing an autosteer system to pull the trigger.

Daddy Cornstar, you did an excellent job in presenting this video. Very clear explanation along with great video backup. I'M not a farmer, but spent many years running commercial boats offshore, where we depended on GPS to track courses, locate destinations, routes etc. I can tell that you've learned the GPS system, and are obviously comfortable using this valuable tool. And I know that the Cornstars would NOT endorse any product that was NOT true to its claims. GREAT JOB ! Capt B//SW FLORIDA.

You got to love that auto steer! whether spreading fertilize, planting , spraying or tillage they drive straighter than any operator I know and they save on overlap, seed, chemical, fert ,diesel and time. We've been slowly adding and finally was able to find a used one for the combine. We have tractors from the early 80's and they work great as long as make sure you steering linkages are all tight. Good job Daddy corn star on telling your side of the story . As expensive as inputs are it doesn't take long to pay for them ,not to mention operator comfort and you have more time to watch whats happening behind you!!

I was the same way with autosteer. We bought a tractor that had autosteer in it & didn't even use it the first year. It was our main tillage tractor & I didn't think you needed it for tillage. Then the service guy set it up for me & I started using it & now I wouldn't be without it. Especially ripping cornstalks in the fall. The ripper is only 18 foot wide so there is a lot of turning, with autosteer you can skip strips so you don't have to turn so short. I think at the end of the day you are not so tired out & you can focus on whatever piece of equipment you are pulling. Also I think you did a great job on the video & look forward to more. You guys do a great job on your videos.

Thanks for the interesting and informative video, Daddy Cornstar! I liked your video running the planter a while ago, and wanted to ask you if you have ever seen safety gloves made out of woven steel? They're used a lot by people who use knives at work: in meat packing plants, restaurants, etc. There are different kinds, and I couldn't find a good link to recommend off the bat, but I'm sure if you look online you can choose something you like. The purpose is to save you from being cut when you are prying mud from in between the planter discs/wheels. Think of the money you'll save in band-aids alone, not to mention peroxide and cut tendons :) Also, sure would love to see the complete process of digging a grave from start to finish (including back-filling and then re-topping after settling, if you want to show us) Would enjoy seeing the actual measurements too....do you actually dig to 6', or some other depth, by what length and width? I think you and your wife raised two fine young men there and Cole makes me laugh a lot, and keeps things always in the positive, which is a real gift! Thank you Daddy Cornstar! And Cole, are you reading Daddy Cornstar's mail again? :) Sorry my comment is so short ;)

Absolutely amazing. Can you say anything about the net effect of what the accuracy gives you, for example do you use less seed, do you get better spacing, straighter rows. I suppose you may not be able to evaluate that until harvest time and there are a million other variables to consider. I guess, less fatigue, ability to plant better at night and not having bugged out eyes is a great start in evaluating the value the unit provides. Thanks for posting.

I was always interested in how a farmer, who became totally dependent on GPS, managed when the satellites stopped working. Millenial Farmer recently had a video on GPS etc & I asked what'd happen if the system stopped working. He replied saying he'd 'fix it with iron, same as everything else' but that overlooked the point I was making. (I replied saying I'd forgotten that he had the 'tallest ladders in the world'). I appreciate the benefits as you mentioned, particularly for your eyesight & the ability to work longer days etc. But just imagine if that system went wrong & every farmer, everywhere, had to go back to the old ways before GPS. My farming 'work' started at the age of 6 in 1964... First job was chopping up kindling for the fires followed by being taught how to use a catapult (taken off poachers by my Grandma) before mucking out & breaking up fights in the pig pens... Seriously, keep well from England..;-))

I bet it is a great idea I have never used it we quit row cropping and just do cattle hay and a few fields of grain for the cows and we cut over 1100 sometimes 1200 acres of hay and I am looking at putting it on the two big tractors that spray plant and cut I think it would help a lot I'm usually give out by the time we have ran across 5 or 6 rough fields spending all day and into the night staring out the side window to see where the drill marks are or the spray foam

"My boys talked me into it" Congratulations on raising some fine young farmers. Because I'm betting this involved some SERIOUS negotiation skills. Along with some well thought out arguments as to economic sense of spending that much money. Glad it worked out for you, and by the sounds of it, your first year probably damn near paid for the system from being able to run all night repeatedly when you might not have gotten all the land planted otherwise. Having spent MANY hours working at night after my full time day job, and I totally agree, staring after the marker line all night long is incredibly tiring. You make mistakes with overlap and missed spots. This equals money lost.

Did you guys check out the Wheelman Auto Steer before deciding to go with Ag Leader? If so, what was the advantages or disadvantages of each?

Autosteer is a tool. Actually it does translate into money as Cole s dad was able to plant through the night to get the crops inbetween the rain and plant more accurately without double seeding in addition maximizing crop volume. They gained time and time is money. The farmers that got their crops in before insurance deadlines will most likely be the winners. Maximizing yields with autosteer.

@@CGW116A I see what you're saying, but that's stretching to justify the cost. I want to see data that shows a 100 acres split in half one auto steer and one manual and see the difference in yield.

Yield might not be entirely different but passes across the field and operator error/fatigue are greatly reduced. Say you're a foot off each pass on a 16 row planter. That's 2.5% more efficient, cutting your tractor related inputs but that much. Say you spend $100,000 a year on that that's a savings of $2,500. Pays for itself in three years. Not to mention you can put it in other equipment and keep a better eye on your equipment which would give you the potential to catch breakdowns before they do a lot of damage.

@@ColeTheCornstar With the countouring farming that was shown in the video most of the fields were on a curve. The amount of steering that was occuring appears to be a lot on their farm. I cant imagine trying to hold any line at night within a foot with that many curves/turns. There is all kinds of autosteer info out there on the internet as to the advantages. Reduce overlapping, Fatigue, seed/chemical savings, fuel savings seem to be most common things mentioned. My point is there is more that reflect yield totals. If a farmer can plant can cover more ground each day of a short rainy planting season including planting through the night without worrying about visibility the yield on the back end, due to time of growing season is increased, is improved as well. The next thing that will be coming is automated autonomous field farming. Large corporate farms will have the equipment first as they will be able to afford it due to their large volume of acres. These new planters/combines with the self adjusting/monitoring systems is the next phase. Technological change becoming more rapid even in farming.
