as a girl, i understand what you mean by "debby is nothing but her role"... even if she has characteristics that stand out, she falls into the "lover girl intertwined in the action" trope. I wish we could have seen more of her and the relationship she has with Baby. I enjoy action movies, and Baby Driver is one of my favorite movies ever, but female characters are often left out or not developed enough in this type of media. (great video btw, i love the way you explain things) :)

the same goes for Bats. he really felt like a character. I mean, most of the characters in Baby Driver feel like they're in a movie. they couldn't exist in real life. every one of them has a purpose, but I don't expect them to have a life outside of that purpose. the characters really are just characters. don't get me wrong, I personally love that aspect of the movie. it gives it kind of a surreal vibe. sorry if all of that wasn't clear😶

My way of thinking about the whole Debby situation is that we are shown that the cook yells at her and always give an attitude to her whenever he speaks. I guess it could hint that her life is bad or boring and she only gets the thrill of life around Baby. I still think that she should've been fleshed out a bit more but that's the best reason I can think of.

And the implication that her mom passed away from the laundry mat scene! Wright definitely put in details to make leaving with Baby seem like a good option for her but I still think he didn’t quite give her enough reason.

Fun fact about the masks, they weren't able to get the rights to use the Halloween mask so they used Mike Meyers instead. That's likely what caused the plot hole. I like to imagine your version where only JD has the wrong mask was the original vision

The movie commits to it's pace and premise no movie is perfect every filmmaker has to make sacrifices the way i look at flaws in film is how much did it distract me basically if I only think of the problems after the movie is over not really a problem to me

I wouldn’t say one is better than the other, but I would say I personally prefer Scott pilgrim overall. I honestly didn’t really care for much of the characters in baby driver; baby himself does have interesting traits and a good backstory, but I just really don’t care for Ansels performance. Everyone else is either underdeveloped or not very interesting in my opinion. I think what really saves baby driver for me and makes me at least acknowledge that it’s a great film (8/10)is the craftsmanship. I would argue it’s maybe the one it does have over Scott pilgrim. The editing and cinematography are probably the best in any Wright film and really any action comedy in general. The action and songs are amazing too and I love how they’re synced up to every scene. But again, I dont unfortunately love the film as much as many others do. Without my bias of nostalgia for the film, the reason why I prefer Scott pilgrim overall is because it simply has more of everything. It’s much more funnier to me, which is subjective yes, but I also think that the way the film uses editing and cinematography to enhance the story is really masterful. Baby driver might have better looking shots and editing on a technical level, but on a creative and artistic level I like Scott Pilgrim more. Some people call the film problematic because of the “dating a high schooler” plot point but, the truth is that’s the POINT of the story and of Scott’s character. The film knows it’s wrong, and Scott does deserve the disrespect and everything that everyone in the film throws at him. The entire opening of the film, everyone is basically berating and making fun of Scott, some even being quite hostile and unpleasantly blunt, which is deserved. His growth towards the end is a little rushed, but he at least achieves the stepping stones to become a less terrible person than he already is. There is maybe too much characters in the film, but in defense the film is adapting a series of graphic novels plus most of the minor characters, while not very important or brief, do have lots of funny moments in the film. Like I said, I prefer the film because it’s a more varied package for me; I can laugh at Scott being an idiot and the many other jokes in the film, I can have a blast with the action, bop my head to the incredible soundtrack and score, I get invested in the story and battle of the evil exes, in other words it’s a movie I can put on any day. With baby driver, I’ll have a good time nonetheless, but it’s not something I’ll come back to as often. It’s like the food that you like but don’t love that everyone else really likes, and whenever someone serves it at a party or for dinner at a friends house, you’ll eat it and you’ll enjoy it but it’s not something you’d be eating all the time. That’s simply how I feel about the film. I’m not gonna sit here and pretend like Scott pilgrim is this perfect masterpiece though, as much as I love the film: the romance isn’t as fleshed out admittedly, certain parts of the film outside of the high schooler thing haven’t aged well either(some nostalgic yet dated 2010s media, iffy treatment of bisexuality, the brief racism that Gideon remarks to Knives, etc) the film has its flaws. It’s not enough though to tarnish my enjoyment of the overall picture though. I just simply love the atmosphere of this film and enjoy the whole concept of it, as absurd and comical as it is. I appreciate that baby driver is wrights own, original idea, and I think it’s fantastic that some consider it their favorite work of his, but in my eyes I’ll always prefer Scott pilgrim and the cornetto trilogy. Still, both are great, despite some problematic aspects of both films both in the actual story and behind the camera(ansel allegations, the “dating a high schooler” aging poorly, Kevin spacey,etc). TLDR: both are good but I like Scott Pilgrim more. you can like whichever one you want.

I watched Baby Driver back in 2018 and I never stopped thinking about it. I’ve seen it about 100 times and used to think it was a perfect movie, I even want to be a director because of movies like Baby Driver. Edgar Wright is an amazing director in terms of editing and visually slick storytelling. Then I watched Last Night in Soho and I was sorely disappointed, I realized Wright.. can’t write lol. Especially the female characters were so so underdeveloped and didn’t have any human like charm. Ever since I’ve studied baby driver more closely and realized something about the way he writes his characters is way off. Especially the female characters, and I really appreciate that you mentioned it in the video! I’ve been wondering if someone else had helped write or even just re wrote the story how could the female characters be improved? Maybe more scenes with Debora to fully develop her character and give her a better reason to leave with baby? Maybe switch the roles between buddy and darling? I’m still not really sure because the movie kind of works out the way it is, in a way. It’s almost portrayed as a fantasy land the way these criminals still take time to dress so nicely (which I think is both to represent their personalities and make it more eye catching) but this wouldn’t happen in real life, during the ending scene where baby is getting arrested, the 3 cops are wearing different colored pants, the one in the center being a different shade to please the eyes. So, it all feels cartoonish and like it’s really not trying to be so real? Or maybe Wright got lazy which checks out considering his side characters from other movies.
