Some filipinos don't support but they love to drag people down, and yes there's always a crab mentality here in the Philippines, some are judgmental, some are negative criticism. As a singer, it really hurts when no one supports you on your craft or passion, but if you have a dream, you just keep on moving, just keep on reaching your dream, never give up. If you want to be a viral singer, you must be handsome, yes one of the main criteria for some Filipinos is the looks, they don't focus enough on the talent but they are more focused on the looks, if you handsome or beautiful, then congratulations you will have many supporters....

There are a couple of factors that play out. 1. There's no government and media support. When I worked with VIVA in the early 2000, we had to convince radio stations or even to the point, pay just to play local music. And even with the regulations they passed, foreign music is played at 70%- 80% while the whole local industry had to fight for that remaining 20% of airtime. 2. Our music is stuck in the 80s ballads genre, or 90s pop R&B which to date is not internationally marketable. We need musicians like Anggun, who stayed true to her roots and made it international because of her unique sound. So however great our singers may sound, be it vocal range, techniques and style - they are just mere interpreters with no original sound of their own (probably with better vocal arrangement). 3. Philippines is a pretty small market, and unfortunately with less purchasing power to even generate buzz around the world. Korea had government and public support, and it took them a long time to get to where they are now. You see how they promote their own food and music on all media? 4. True, a lot of western musical artists have Fililino heritage, but that's all we have in common with them. There were signed as Western artists with Western music. Doesnt count. 5. A lot of our singers dont write their own songs. And if they do, they are the typical acoustic ballads that may have more European flavor than western. 6. Yeah, Filipinos always brag about their artists only for validation. But believe me, they dont buy these artists records at all!!! Regine tried it, she made it to the Asian market but was too old already when it was time to go west. We cant rely on singing competitions, we all know we can nail those. If you want to be proud, then check your own music playlist and let's see how much original Filipino music you listen to. And that's reality.

I think it has something to do with the originality in type and style of music. Filipinos just tend to copy or imitate other style but we dont have our own style that could be embraced globally. For example kpop they have they’re own style of music even afro pop is now hitting the globe now getting a lot of recognitions from western singers like JB, Ed Sheeran etc. and yeah one big factor is the support from fil community like koreans and africans are doing. I live here in nigeria and people here really love their music they dont get tired listening to it u hardly hear a western songs being played here.

In my opinion, I think filipino talent esp in singing is marketable internationally but to look for ways on how to put "autotune" is kinda I think the problem since everybody else use it to promote music and style and to some filipino singers they dont regularly use it and what if someone we knew like a very good singer use it suddenly it will feel weird I guess and I mean we are in a place where there are a lot of great singers so why we should try to fit in to a world were autotune is a thing. It doesn't make sense and our singers is more competitive and flexible enough to sing because it kinda like in the genes. Im not against to any superstars out there but u cant just market someone who is already good in its craft and try to fit in to a world were everybody uses enhancement just to gain fame. Autotuning is everywhere and there are only a few who make it to fame using their raw voice. Some our fave tiktok songs are in autotune and yeah they got beating and the hype but to filipino singers they dont sing for the beats and style. They sing to communicate what they felt at the moment and they always sing from the heart.

In 70's, FM radio stations here in the Phil. were told to play one OPM song for every hour because these radio stations played American songs only and I think it was a "carry-over" of American occupation from 1900-1946. Almost half of the viewers are all young viewers, nowadays they prefer pop with all those bling bling, sexy dresses, attractive young and sexy singers with those music videos that is pleasant and attractive to watch to. Some Young viewers dont focus on vocals but focuses on what is in and pleasant to the eyes. But for us older we prefer Bruno Mars type of music and some ballad . Filipinos are more focus on vocal skills but the trend is not into belting. Yes we are into some OPM ballad and pop too but the influence of social media specially Kpop are more strong because of so much advertising. And yeah that is the reality.

They need more original singer-songwriters who write in English or even in mixed English. I see reactors reacting to the local language singers but that's not going to appeal to most of the world discovering new singers if the song is in a language they don't understand so the singers need to use English to gain attention and attract fans. Eventually someone will break out commercially and the gates will open to many other good singers-songwriters. Once they break out commercially, then even their songs in the local language, if good, will appeal to their fans. Their international fans will make an effort to understand the songs written in a foreign language. There are some individuals and groups who have the originality and talent to potentially break out. They just need to keep pushing harder so they're ready when the lucky break and opportunity comes.

If someone goes viral for this one video, they will market it so much that it became common and after that they will produce music or songs with the same feels and the hype is already dying out.other thing i notice that producers/media exploits this artists' background story that the talents became a side note. Yes filipinos love their own talents so much that we(or i) enjoy it better if we can show that we can also do what other artists do, but better.

Filipinos are talented singers, but FEW are good music creators. Even here, only indie artists can make music on their own, a lot of vocal belters are very reliant on composer's and song writers. Music is not just about the voice. It's art. I don't listen to a lot of Filipino singers myself because I can't just listen to a good voice that doesnt have substance. Famous singers here can only get you as far as the show season. But after that, if you are just going to wait for a composer and a song writer to write songs for you then nothing will happen to you. Bruno Mars? Sings Well, can compose, can write songs, multi faceted. Olivia Rodrigo? Can compose, can write songs. A lot of our local singers? Only singers and nothing else. It's not always the race.

Not true. A lot of the good singers only belt bc it's what gets them the audience's attention especially when they sing popular songs "better" than the original western singer. But when they do release their own songs or Opm or when they sing songs that are low key with their own flair or creativity on it -- because the song isn't as well known, it doesn't get much attention. Filipino Composers, Song Writers and Singers are all creative in their own way, you just don't see it much bc they don't sing those so much on stage.
