if you meet a belgian that get offended by the word french fries, it's an idiot :) I'm from Liège and i can tell you why the americans called it french fries... it's because there's a verb "French" that means cutting in small pieces... wich is the way french fries are cut...
@maxime8674 жыл бұрын
Liège!:(
@maartenvangeel60174 жыл бұрын
@@LyciaD3 yes it is because they are frenched. But how many people know that? Most think it is from France. So when people say french fries, 90 % or more believes it is French. So getting agitated about that does not make one an idiot. I used to serve foreigners all the time and i made sure they knew why it was called that. USA even changed the name into freedom fries because of dispute with the French. Such things do annoy me.

To answer your question about fries: (sorry fellow Belgians) Fries, as we know it today, where invented by a French dude. He saw the dollar marks in his eyes and expanded his business to Belgium. But Belgians weren't very fond of the taste of it, so we made those fries better. pre-bake the potato-fries at 160°C till they are soft (yes, you need to squeeze them to know), then let the fries cool down, next bake them again at 180°C till they are golden-yellow-ish... ad a pinch of salt and enjoy! Never get fries without sauce :D Mayonaise is the number one choice. There's a "people's praline", from the Leonidas stores. Every Belgian town has a town hall, a postal office, a supermarket, a bakery, butcher, friture and a leonidas. You can go in and get one of the golden boxes (small, medium, large, etc.). They offer a variety of pralines and Leonidas has classics (like the white one with the almond) and newer variations they mix up. It's what you get your girlfriend's mother, your own mother, yourself if you're feeling particularly Belgian that day :D Glad you enjoyed our country, other cities like Hasselt, Leuven, Gent, Brugge, Antwerpen are beautiful too!

Hold on, you can get Westvleteren in the Asian Wok? 😂 Sounds about right. It is the rarest beer available in cafés, bars or restaurants but available in Brussels in a wok... As a Belgian myself, I'd call that typically Belgium. We love our exceptional circumstances, overly complicated laws and strange decisions. Extremely weird to see a place I spent so much time in on youtube.

A praline is made using Belgian chocolate (nowadays even Swiss chocolate but packaged in Belgium hence the 'made in Belgium' trademark) so to a Belgian, they are not considered as the real deal. If you want to taste more yummy and way less expensive chocolate (like locals do), simply visit a supermarket/grocery store and buy brands like Jacques or Cote d'Or or Callebaut. You can get them with all kinds of stuffings too. Price comparison: 15€ for 500gr pralines (Neuhaus/Godiva/..) as to 7€ for 500gr of chocolate bars of the forementioned brands. Pralines are eaten or given on special occasions and are more 'snobby' due to their expensiveness and please visit a 'chocolatier' (you will thank me later 😉). If you are into history/culture/architecture, please visit Brussels/Antwerp/Leuven/Brugge/Gent/the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Ieper (Flemish fields). So breezing through my little Belgium will last more then 2 days 🙂 Oh: and please visit a small local brewery.. a tasty beer awaits you. Enjoy your stay 👍

Dandoy, you should have speculoos, there are way better spots to get waffles, same thing with chocolate. Neuhaus is a big player in Belgium, better to go to the small artisanal shops to get the authentic experience. If you need any tips on Belgian food feel free to ask me

In fact, what you call "normal waffles" (the Brussels ones) are not the common waffles. We eat them at fairs (usually with our hands despite the toppings) but not usually at home. At home, we do plainer kinds of waffles. Not even the Liège ones because they make the waffle iron so dirty with the sugar chunks caramelising in it ! There are plenty of recipies. I would say every household used to have their own ;-). I supppose now most people would buy them ready-made in the supermarkets but I still bake my own.

I find it very funny how a traditional thing in every big city in the world has a 'touristy' version :p The liege waffles are a great example , most (if not all :D) Belgians eat it without any addition. I know that in Prague you've got the same thing with their spiraled cone, the fillings are purely for the tourist :P

10:52 for the americans who instantly crinch on the word mayonaise. i have to note that in america the mayonaise (apparently) is discusting and a HUGE Diffrence from belgium mayonaise. the reason for this is that (i hurd) in america there are no restrictions on the recipe and volume of ingredients. in belgium on the other hand u need to have a certain amount % of ingredients of eggs,oil etc so thats why belgium mayonaise is amazing.
