You just need common sense I recently traveled all over Colombia and I lived there for 3 years in the 1980’s, the country seems to be unfairly treated over the years for its reputation, for me it’s improved immensely and you will not have any problems there less so than some cities in the USA imo.

Saludos!

Guys nice video. I am from Bogotá. min 2:08 you say you are in Santa Fe and that you feel safe, you are actually are in the Macarena Neighborhood that is actually amazing because it's it is an art and restaurant district, many foreigners live in, so barrio La Macarena is not the red light neighborhood which is barrio Santa Fe which is pretty edgy. In Bogotá there are barrios (neighborhoods) and localidades (large districts) there are hundreds of barrios both just 20 localidades. Both La Macarena and Santa Fe barrios are part of the localidad Santa Fe. Chapinero is pretty large but the nice part is Chapinero Alto thats form 7th avenue towards the mountains 1st avenue. There is also a part called Quinta Camacho which is pretty nice. Usually most barrios near 7th avenue form the center of the city towards the north are safe for foreigners. There are a ton of places in other parts of the city worth visiting where you don't find many tourists, I particularly recommend the Virgilio Barco library and the Simon Bolivar Park, the Botanical garden is beautiful and the Maloka science and Technology museum are great.

I did tons of research before l visited Bogota as well as during the visit and my opinion is that area around Parque 93 and Usaquen seem to be safe and confirmed by locals living in those areas. Use transmillineo to travel around the city cheaply. Parque 93 area does not feel like you are in Colombia, however. I prefer Bogota over Medellin because of the weather. It is so much cooler in Bogota where as I thought Medellin was warmer. In coastal areas, it is just hot. Best area to visit in Colombia is coffee growing region. Great weather and beautiful hills and mountains. It is beautiful there.

Hey bro. I'm Colombian. Just let you know, the numbering of the streets anywhere in Colombia doesn't have to do anything with a safer place. Streets numbers are just a location reference. what happen is that communities grow or expand in certain areas and their behavior determines the safety aspect of them.

Jorge Hernandez Teusaquillo is a beautiful area or neighborhood located between the more expensive area in the north of the city and Plaza de Bolívar, the city’s main plaza and heart of it. Teusaquillo is known for its architecture, as is mainly English Tudor style. There are also many nice shops and restaurants located in those traditional brick houses.

First of all congratulations for your educational videos, I kind of been watching few of them so far. I think the safety issue is relative. It's true some neighborhoods are safer than others but it also depends on how you look. I'm Asian descent and like you both, I look foreigner to Colombians. If you look like them, most likely they may think you won't be an easy target. It also depends on how you dress, walking in shorts and flowered shirt with a big hat and sandals is like having a sign in your forehead "Look I'm a foreigner come and get me". Like I said I'm Asian but I dress like them, long trousers or jeans, a simple T-shirt and a baseball cap lowered down so it covers my Asian eyes, it works for me, it should work for everyone else. It also helps that I'm fluent in Spanish and know some of their slang, their reaction is a lot different than if you like to communicate with them with a broken Spanish. And most important "no dar papaya", everybody knows what it means. I see you in your video walking around with your phone next to your ear, you see? I love Colombia!

what we have in Bogotá are "localidades" which I think the best translation would be boroughs. There are 20 localidades in total and around 1600 neighborhoods among them. What you need to know is specifically the neighborhood you´re in which is of course determined by the street.

We’re only staying in Bogota for 2 days, then staying in Fusa with her family for 9) but I’m slightly nervous about safety in Bogota. They’re Colombian, but I’m a 6 foot 4 - 225lb white guy with blonde hair and blue eyes, I won’t exactly blend in. We’ll be with her adult brother and 4 male cousins who are from there, I guess I’ll just have to be careful. TLDR; Estoy muy emocionado pero un poco nervioso por visitar Bogotá.

I've been to Colombia several times to Medellin. The Colombians come in all colors of skin and eyes. It's your Spanish and how you carry yourself that gives a non-Colombian away. Granted most people are not that fair but there are people who are. I had a nurse, a guy, in an operation I had on my eyes that I would have sworn was from Ireland because of his looks, but he was astounded that I could speak Spanish. 6 foot 4, well, that's not very common anywhere in the world. I was also at a food court in a mall one time where everybody was very white and fair but they were all or mostly Colombian.

Born and raised in Bogotá and yes, neighborhoods are tricky. You can’t go by ‘localidades’ (some kind of zone division in Bogotá). Each ‘zone’ has many different neighbourhoods within them. ‘Chapinero’ itself has about 50 different neighborhoods 😅 and some of them also have the word chapinero in the name (for example Chapinero Alto is a very nice neighborhood). If you’re looking for a place to stay you can’t go wrong staying near ‘el parque de la 93’ or Andino shopping mall. One of my favourite neighborhoods 😊 close to Zona G (great nightclubs/bars/restaurants)
@SilvanaRodriguez16
@SilvanaRodriguez16 Жыл бұрын
And you can be somewhat correct about the numbers. The higher numbers for avenues/‘calles’ is where the ‘nicest’ neighborhoods are (only meaning where rich people live) as you can find hidden gems and great places to visit all over the city. I hope you come back to Bogotá and get a better experience 👍🏼😊

15:15 the song is called "El Honorable" by Los Dotores de la Carranga. It's lyrics are basically mocking Colombian politicians, and it describes nost of then pretty well. The genre of this type of music is Carranga, and it is originated from the department of Boyacá at the Andean North part of the country. 12:38 this genre might be a Bambuco or a Pasillo, maybe even a Rumba Criolla/Campesina, these come from all of the Andean Occident and South of the country nearing Ecuador. I'm glad you guys got to hear actually real Colombian music :)

I'm from cali Colombia and some foreigners and even Colombians talk bad things about this country. Let"s talk about some points: You can't believe everything what you watch on tv, because if you think south America is like the tv series narcos you have been brainwashed by Hollywood. Also Colombia isn't a poor country because in cali they spend 4.5 millions dollars in Christmas lights for a celebration that it last 4 weeks and that's something that I never saw in some non-importants cities in the states. Also if you think Colombia is a dangerous place, I wonder why some people is retiring and looking for places to live here. Also I dare you to walk your dog in cities like Detroit, st Louis and Baltimore and see how it goes...I do apologize with this guy for the scams in Bogota... But as I told many times, if you wanna stay of danger take out more money of your pocket and spend time in the best places...

I don't quite understand the motivation behind your comment, apparently they really liked Bogotá but you are taking a defensive position as if they had said mainly bad things about the city and the country. Also spending a lot of money on christmas lights doesnt mean there can't be poverty. Maybe politicians should rather invest in more useful things, to actually improve the quality of life, instead of an unnecessary amount of decoration.

Sorry to hear about that but Please don't get disappointed. Dear tourist people don't need to walk around the city wearing fancy clothes or jewelry, robbers are around the world, no only in Colombia. Colombia has beautiful places like Medellin, Cartagena, los Llanos orientales, el Eje cafetero, The Andina region and many more. There you can find the best coffee and one of the precious rocks which is the Emeralds. Colombian people are hard working, polite and friendly. Colombia is a wonderful choice to take a nice vacations besides it is not expesive. One of the biggest issues here is Government corruption.🙄but please if you want to take a walk go with someone who knows the area, you can visit, Monserrate, La plaza de Bolivar, El Palacio de Nariño, El Lago, Unicentro, La Candelaria, the zone of North, with beautiful monuments and elegant Malls, near to Bogota is Zipaquira the city of the salt. i feel like most places here in colombia are dangerous but specially bogota thats why i really think that if you come to colombia bota should be the place you less time spend on and spend more time on the coasts, most people here like myself are really paranoic when they are walking on the street, it was such a changing experience going to europe because it was much safer y was soo used to not showing my phone in the street or being scared every second i was left alone and thats really normal and many people here are used to that feeling of being alert. so being able to not fell that way really relaxed me.

I am from Bogota, and agree with you. I love Bogota but I don't recommend people going there unless they have traveled to other Latin American countries, they are men or women travelling with men, you have a lot of common sense, you are fully aware of all the possible dangers you can encounter, if you are not naive and you are suspicious of people you don't know.

itś a little confusing, Santa Fe "barrio" (neighborhood) is the red zone, prostitution. BUT Santa Fe locality (localities are composed of many barrios) is, with Candelaria, the downtown part, and have many safe barrios. The confusing part is that, the barrio Santa Fe is NOT in the Santa Fe locality, itś in Mártires one...??? (many locals don't know that,... but the maps show the locality etc), that is, Mártires, in the occidental border of Santa Fe locality...???. When you see an S in the ADDRESS, at the final part, or at the second place number, itś SOUTH, cause the south is also huge, incrementing the number of streets with a S. Other quote, Chapinero is also locality, AND in that locality is a barrio call Chapinero that goes mostly from 45 street to 72 street, the safest part of that barrio is up the hill, from 7th avenue (career) to the east part, and after 67 street up the 11th career; north from 72 street is el Lago, Chico, Cabrera, etc... barrios, that are Chapinero locality, but it's the north part, where the north of the city starts and where the wealthiest people live. Beside Simón Bolivar park is the Virgilio Barco library (passing a pedestrian bridge at the east-north entrance) , itś a very nice building... you can search photo in goggle. Most young people goes to the downtown hostels, there's more life in that zone, you have to, "no dar papaya" (you're just asking for it, in slang) beware of, thatś all. Nice video.

I absolutely love your videos guys you keep it interesting and so real I love it. I am from Bogota and I love my city but yes be careful where you stay. I would always recommend staying in the north specially around zona T and parque 93 also it is not santa fe where you are it is actually La Macarena and it is a lovely neighborhood love the architecture and culture there. Always be safe!!!!!!

So guys, just to clarify. Chapinero is a so-called locality, not a neighbourhood. As a bogotano here is my advice to anyone traveling and wishing to stay in Bogotá. If you are more of a backpacker stay in La Candelaria (historic center) locality of Santa Fe. There´s plenty of friendly and affordable hostels. If you are a laid back traveler but enjoy funky cafés and nice restaurants, stay in Chapinero, but here´s the thing: Chapinero is nicer and safer the more eastwards, so stay above (to the east) of carrera 7th. The city is lined by mountains on the east side. The video guys were west of 7th, on 14th (Av, Caracas) which is a bit dodgy. That particular area has many pawn shops which, are like ATM´s for thieves. If you prefer a little bit of luxury and to stay next to Bogotá's finest cuisine stay further north in Usaquén, or still in Chapinero but close to Zona Rosa or park on 93 st.

Keep showing that big camera in public, you are going to get mugged or worse, I told this before in another of your videos, I am Colombian and born in Bogota, but live in Miami, so please be careful. Why don't you guys try the coffee region, Manizales, Armenia or Pereira? They are the safest cities in Colombia and the living cost is a lot cheaper than Bogota and the are spring like weather and temperatures all year around.
