hi guys! I hope you’ve all been well recently, I just left the hospital so I had some time on my hands to do a video on something that I’ve been thinking of for a while now!
I’m sure we have all seen articles or discussions about whether or not social media is ruining the way we consume books and I thought it would be a good thing to maybe discuss a little further in detail- so I did🤌🏻
I hope you all love this video as much as I love you (which is a lot) and enjoy!!

I think that the point of Booktok ruining books/literature is that Booktok pushes books that are basically just wattpad fanfiction instead of real books. Most of Booktok is promoting books that are mainly smut and pushing real books to the side where you have to go looking for them. Now there are a lot of people who can’t read books without ”spice.” The constant and overwhelming promotion of worse books by the majority of Booktok dilutes the quality of all books because it’s what the publishers see makes the most money. To your point of the publisher making the author create books in very short periods of time the onus is on both parties involved because the author should understand what their contract says and the responsibilities they incur from signing that contract.

for me I see it in the way that erotic literature has always existed throughout time, people enjoyed erotica at the same time that Jane Austen and Oscar Wilde were in existence- so I don’t think that an enjoyment/publishing of spicy books necessarily ruined literature, because the two can co-exist. I do agree that there are some cases when spicy literature can go too far (EG when I recommend a YA book and get asked if it has spice) but the argument that “wattpad fanfiction books” are being pushed too much argues that 1) these books cannot be good / enjoyable, when they are to many people. 2) that no higher quality/emotionally complex books are being written (they are, by the thousands every single year) and 3) that booktok is being held responsible for every single consumption of books across the community, which is both not fair and too pressuring. sure I can agree that some books are awful to me, but then I don’t read it and find others that are more to my taste. regarding the authors and their contracts, I do understand the argument that they should understand what their contract says- but i don’t think it is that simple. There is a lot of pressure to hold onto your publishing deal and keep your editors happy considering it is so difficult to get into mainstream publishing anyway, a lot of authors probably push themselves in short periods of time as to keep their deals.
