I was at the Breitling Boutique yesterday and it’s a great watch. The movement is fine and it’s fit and finish is top notch. In a day where you can only buy an Explorer on the gray market for $12K, this is a good deal. They modify their movements heavily. I didn’t buy it as I just bought a Santos De Cartier large an hour earlier. That has an in-house movement but only 42 hours of reserve…and an ETA is probably a better movement to boot. ETA has served me well in my 2006 SMP300. The movement is fine and outsourcing was the norm for many of the most storied and iconic watchmakers throughout history. Also,who cares about the box? Rolex has a terrible box. That’s a millennial thing. The watch is what matters. I will go back and buy this watch in blue before summer.

Update: I ended up buying the “ice blue” platinum bezel version. Absolutely beautiful. 2K more but they offered me 8% off or an additional bracelet. BTW, I also own a 2022 SOH 2 with the B20 movement (70 hour, high end movement) and it has a solid case back. Again, the box means nothing, but the Platinum came in a leather version of their “new” box.

Interesting, the new Super Ocean received similar criticism because of the movement and related MSRP. The grey market price of the SO reflects a significant decrease from the MSRP. I expect the same thing to happen with the Chronomat GMT. Breitling design and finish is outstanding. The B01 movement is top shelf on there higher price-point chronographs. They need to figure out their in house movement on non chronograph watches, if they expect people to buy these watches at the AD or Boutique.

Thank you Bruce for another great review and video! I would like to share my view on it too. I own this watch with the blue dial together with the chronomat B01in silver, and the Superocean 42 AB20 in black, and I think this is an amazing everyday watch, is very comfortable, looks amazing, has GMT functionality and 200mt water resistance and the overall quality of Breitling watches. I agree that the box is a let down but again is something that people appreciate (not me to be honest) from an environmental perspective. I also agree that the price is a bit too expensive and themovement could be better but as you mentioned can be easily and very economically. I find difficult thought to be unhappy about the watch because of these things. Are watch enthusiast not the people who buy a Rolex or a Patek at 4 or 5 times the retail price just to have it? I think it has become a bit hypocritical from all of us to complaint about one brand overprice and not about another. To me any watch has an emotional buy in it. It has to give me what I want and make me feel good with it and because of that even if the price doesn't seems to be right it is not a deal breaker. I am sure most of watch collector do that although very few admit it. I love this watch and I wear it much more than the Chronomat B01 because it feels much better on the wrist and gives me the same vibes of the big brother without killing my wrist. Do I think about the movement, the box or how much I pay for it every time I look at it? Definitely not. Do I smile and feel reassored every time I look at its dial, amazing looking and unique bracelet, finishing and when I think I have a chronometer certified watch? Absolutely YES! ...and as someone else mentioned you can always get between 15 and 20% discount from a dealer which make the price a bit more even. ;)

It was Breitling that got me into collecting watches. Yes, they use third party movements too, but the quality of the watch is a state-of-art. The construction and the finishing is in another level. You need to have a Breitling in your hands to get the feeling of the quality of it. It’s impressive. There’s a video on KZbin showing the manufacturing of their case. If you watch it, you’ll understand my point. As the simplicity of the design, Breitling is following the trend of understating designs. Breitling is more about the wholeness than the movement it’s inside. I do not wear them anymore because I am old and I prefer to wear smaller and lighter watches, but I am still a big fan.

Very interesting video, Bruce. I'm waiting for delivery of a new green dial Chronomat GMT from my AD, and am very excited to be getting it. You raise good points about the pluses and minuses of the model, even though I don't completely agree with you on several of them. If I may, some observations and comments: the main thing that bothers me about the C'mat GMT 40 is that, for the money, Breitling could have used a higher quality movement; but, I dunno,- maybe to keep it thin required the movement to be what it is. One of the principal reasons I like the C'mat GMT is because it's THIN. I also like its versatility as both a GMT and a Diver. Very useful. It also does NOT bother me that the watch is an office GMT rather than having a traveler's configuration. The quick set date on the Breitling outweighs the pain in the neck of having to twirl the hour hand twice around the dial to advance the calendar a single day on a traveler's. Also, the white date window on the green dial is visually more pleasing (to me) and coordinates well with the other dial furniture. I, for one, applaud Breitling for toning the box way down, especially these days when resources are becoming scarcer and more expensive. I have several high end watches that came in suitcase sized boxes. Talk about a needle in a haystack! Omega has historically been guilty of this overkill. And my recently purchased Bucherer Heritage Bi-compax's box is so big, and had so much extraneous junk, that I had to store it in its own closet! On the other hand, Grand Seiko does a creditable job of providing an appropriate-sized, quality box for its watches, as does Ball, Rolex, Glashutte Original, and Tudor. IN FACT, I'D LOVE TO SEE YOU DO A VIDEO ON THE DIFFERENT SIZED BOXES THAT HIGH END WATCHMAKERS PROVIDE WITH THEIR WATCHES. THAT WOULD A LOT OF FUN. Love your stuff. Keep up the good work! Best regards.

First I need to get off my chest that while this is one of the quieter and cleaner Breitlings, rather than pointing to alternatives with more heft and presence, I'd love a more subtle approach to this watch. I don't need GMT nor diver functionality, but since I'm in agreement on the base dial being beautiful and the bracelet being a highlight (what do you call this style bracelet again?), I would also add the nice reflections coming off of that bezel, it makes me feel that there is a really tasteful dressy sports watch hiding in there somewhere. Best Green dial? Well, certainly better than that Rolex. Not even competition. The dial actually reminds me of the bottle green Bravur BW003, which in the whole I'd still far prefer to this Breitling even if obviously a different market segment. Also it is useful naming greens from Straum and anOrdain.

I have talk to George Kern in person rather recently. And here is the things: First, Breitling is now working on a true in-house 3-hands movement. But the difficulties is not on the hardware itself, but more on strategic. i.e. With current capacity, it will squeeze out the production of B01 movement. So, should Breitling expand the manufacturing facilities? But the question to Breitling in particular is that it is very known for its chronographs, a simple 3-hands models actually didn't sold that much. If this new 3-hands movement only digested by Breitling solely, that would be hardly sustainable. What would be the market acceptance of this movement if it is going to be supplied to other watchmakers? Breitling is now try to figuring out. Second, he said in terms of hardware everything is ready about the adoption of anti magnetism, just have to sort out / wait for some legal or patent issues. Third, it is likely to have some serious complications next year to celebrate its 140 anniversary.

Beautiful. Laugh at me all you want but I really want the mint green 36mm.

I tried the gmt Breitling on couple of weeks ago. Being not a true gmt movement and the winding not feeling quality at all, i thought the very steep price was an absolute disgrace and an insult

Nice vid, Bruce! I think Breitling is doing great things lately but I just never feel like they’re for me. They have a bodacious luxury vibe that doesn’t suit my style. Their case sizes also feel a bit big for me. I REALLY wish they’d do a mid-size 39-40mm Superocean Heritage. I’d probably go for that 🤓

I dislike most of the new Breitling models. The only thing that I like is the bullet bracelet.

Longines Zulu time less than 3k and although eta but only longines exclusive and 72 hrs reserve there is no way breitling selling this for good value

Also the Traska Venturer GMT has a True GMT movement, is thinner than the Breitling with the same PR

Still nowhere near as lazy as Rolex but the weak minded are easily persuaded 😅

The negatives are really funny. Sure the box is important, but you see it several times in your life. The watch quite daily. And I buy a watch if I like it, not because it has a super value for the price. Tudor looks really not luxury. Breitling hits my taste more than any other watch company. But I have a thin wrist and like this new thin watches. The butterfly clasp has to be on this band. Is there a possibility to make micro adjustment on a butterfly clasp? Never seen before. All in all a beautiful watch. My favorites are with grey and white dial. So I don’t really know now what to take, a date just or this one. Really stunning one.
@sirrus0379 Жыл бұрын
Thx for mentioning the date. I don't get why watchbrands still do this. For me a "bad" designed date is a knock off. Why put so much effort in a great watchdesign just to kill the overall experience with a white spot, that seeks attention all the time? A date should be subtle like in the Bell & Ross 03 line watches. Or it should be well integrated. Give it a frame, put it in the right spot, colormatch it to the dial.

There are only 3 Breitling models I really like: Natitimer, Superocean and Emergency. This model never really spoke to me.
@bigmacdaddy1234 Жыл бұрын
I would take the Breitling over the Tudor any day. It has a better fit & finish from end-to-end. On the Rolex forum, they are still complaining about the GMT date wheel on the Tudor not working right since inception until today. Rolex/Tudor never owned up to it and they can't seem to get it permanently fixed.

There are also ongoing issues with the newest Rolex 32XX movement, lol.

Yeah Breitling could be doing so much better. Their brand name, history and prestige are insanely big. But I mean....asking 5.5k for a GMT with pretty much a "basic" of-the-shelf movement with less than 40h of PR, a bracelet that doesn't even offer screws to size (not 100% sure on this one, please tell me if I'm mistaken), a clasp without the possibility of ANY adjustments (I mean...they even have great clasps on various other models, with on-the-fly adjustments, without the needs for any tools). When brands like Tudor are offering way better watches for way less money, better sized to my taste, I just see no point in getting a Breitling. And we can always add Omega to the mix - between getting this or a Seamaster, I know I'd get the latter without even thinking.

They make attractive watches . The whole contentious issue of using eta movements in 5 and a half k watches is very valid . If they want to use generic movements I don’t have an issue but charge 3 and half grand max Add to this the very poor packaging .. I honestly think such actions do the brand such harm and often find it hard to take them seriously..

Considering buying one. Yes, the movement does not match the price but I feel like every watch has at least one major drawback and if they don't, then the price is.
@wristopia4101 Жыл бұрын
Breitling say that customers can request a standard box if they wish to have one. How realistic that is I'm not sure, but if its a dealbreaker I would imagine the AD would go get one PDQ as they would be mad not to! Breitling are not Lazy, they are being rude to their customers IMO
@maciejkluz Жыл бұрын
The thing about the price … they will come out next year with in house movements 3-4 hands it’s confirmed and I think they just trying to match the price to avoid the oris situation with their in house movement. No one is buying them as it’s a too big price jump at once

Once again I think Breitling has completely lost their mind. This watch is using the same movement as my $700 Christopher Ward C65 GMT. Why would anyone buy this watch for almost $6,000 when you can get an Omega for the same price that is far superior? Clearly this watch was designed to take advantage of people who know nothing about watches.

IMO Breitling has better finishing than Omega

What do you mean that Tudor is a true GMT! Didn’t get it.
@ThePurple19684 ай бұрын
The finishing of the watch is way over watches like Tudor, good though they are. This is also a nice comfortable 11mm thin 40mm with a screw down crown and a beautiful dial. There is not a lot in the market that competes with it. Lastly, there is no such thing as true GMT. The way the GMT works is up to the user. I prefer time change rather then hour change GMT.
