I have lived in Brisbane over 40 years and create content here on KZbin about Brisbane and was interested in what you had to say. I live 30km out of the city and find public transport easily accessible and use it regularly to avoid the traffic on the highway. We do need new roads, agree there. Brisbane mayor Adrian Schrinner cares only about the Brisbane Metropolitan area, and NOTHING else. The problems lie in the burgeoning area outside of the BCC area. Why does the BCC have total control over the bus service for example? All transport infrastructure should be the purview of the state government, not a single council. Unfortunately, the state gov answer to any congestion is always toll roads. They have never worked in the way we were told. They are too expensive and drivers actually avoid them.

You don't want people to criticise Brisbane, but then you criticise Perth, have you even been here? Criticising any state or territory, you're critising Australia. It is so negative. I lived on the outskirts of Moscow but moved to Tbilisi, Georgia, after the war started. Now I’m planning to move to Australia. Basically, Brisbane has all the modern city problems. It’s very similar to Moscow. But if you want to have some career opportunities, those are the types of problems you have to overcome. Use public transportation if possible. Use a bike if possible. In Moscow, I had a terrible 250-days-per-year mish-mosh water-or-snow type of climate. In Brisbane, you have nice weather. So if it’s possible, just use a bike or public transportation.

We always tend to whinge and bitch a bit about what we have, ( It's never good enough! ) I moved to Brisbane in January, 1977 and immediately got a truck driving job doing local cartage, which meant I got around all over Brisbane, Ipswich and as far as Deception Bay to the north. Here's what the road infrastructure looked like back then. There was no freeway to the north. Houses and land had been resumed to build it, but for some reason, the Bjelke-Petersen government put it on hold. The freeway to the south went as far as Juliet St in Annerley and it stayed that way far too long. Fairfield Rd was two narrow lanes of bitumen and the intersection of it and Sherwood Rd and the Ipswich Rd underpass, gloried in the name, the "Death Trap" and it all went under water almost every time it rained! Where Ipswich Rd crossed the also regularly flooded Oxley Creek, via a concrete crossing so rough, I used to see motorists occasionally stop and get out to check if they had a flat rear tyre! I well remember people back then referring to Brisbane as just being a "big bush town trying to grow up" and the place deserved the name! I hear it's changed a bit since then though! 😁

I think Sydney and Melbourne is worse. It’s called peak traffic for a reason. I live about 30-40 minutes from the city and I have access to buses and train from 6am to 12am. So all they complained about was peak hour traffic and transport. People complain over the little things. Think the name of the video was misleading. Buses by comparison are crap and many of their drivers are rude. That's why I don't use them anymore. They build plenty of brand new straight into the cbd roads. Of corse these are bus, taxi, gov vehicles only roads. We just get forced to pay tolls on the roads they sold and that’s probably 50% of the major roads. Then they close down bridges, certain roads and then massive amounts of damm bus lanes! The biggest problem is that the toll roads need to be completely remade every 2 years and this work can only be completed by the council. So these roads only get way more $$$$$$ and all roads around them will not be upgraded because then you wouldn’t use the toll road!

It is hell in peak hour traffic. I lived about fifteen minutes from the city, but it would take me an hour each way in traffic. I worked with homeless men in the city and it was just not safe to walk the distance to public transport late at night for female workers. Male, also, but we were more vulnerable. If you've kicked someone out for bad behaviour, and then you meet them up the street where the shops are and therefore the buses, you can be in actual danger. There were no trains near where I lived on the south side. As for accessible transport, we often had men who got jobs in an industrial suburb, and they had to start work at 7am, but there was no bus early enough to get them there. Most had no vehicle or bike, nor could they afford one. I always found the traffic terrible and I lived there for fifteen years. It was a relief to move to a regional town and not have that overwhelming density of slow moving vehicles to contend with morning and night. What I will say about traffic in Brisbane is that it is orderly. I moved there from Bundaberg, and the drivers in Bundaberg were crazier and getting onto a major road from a side road could take ages. I found Brisbane drivers generally obeyed the traffic rules, and the traffic flow was logical and okay. I hate all cities, but I've lived in Sydney, and spent enough time in Melbourne, and visited Adelaide, and to me, Brisbane is by far the best one to live in. The others are depressing. I have a sister in Perth and I know it's beautiful, although smaller than Bisbane. I'm old now and live outside a small regional town and that suits me. That was Brisbane in the 1990's, when it had the population that Adelaide had now. Since then a million people have moved to Brisbane and another million split between The Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. But still the majority of the jobs are in the CBD and inner suburbs and the majority of housing is single family detached homes. This combination maximizes travel demand as more people have to travel further and the low density of housing makes public transport unviable, especially all day frequent services. These types of public transport needs density of at least 25 dwellings per hectare (typical established suburb is 8-12, a bit more in newer areas) and preferably 50+ dwellings per hectare for a high frequency service. This type of density needs the majority of the dwellings to be either townhouses/row houses or apartments, with about 1/3 detached houses. As you can see, for most of Brisbane there's a long way to go for the majority of suburbs to develop that sort of character. So car congestion will likely get worse before it gets better as this type of urban transformation takes at least 30 years to implement. We need to adapt our cities to the type of housing that people under the age of 45 want and can afford. That's not necessarily detached housing, which is ultimately the most expensive option at a citywide scale. The solutions are known, but the politics are different.

I grew up in Brisbane - we had a saying about the English in the Australia - 'Whinging Poms'....But in actual fact I dont agree that Brisbane is a sh#4 hole - but I have not lived there for many years - so I guess it could be! Try living in Northern NSW - some towns have one or two buses a day! and no trains! Knife crime in the the outer areas of Brisbane has increased - places like Logan and Moreton Shire ( Caboolture, Redcliffe etc) was always rough going as far back as the 70s! Bike gangs, Maori NZ gangs, other ethnic gangs! It is true that you could live in many parts of Australia and not be affected by crime!

They will have to improve roads congestion for the olympics.... I wonder what the prices of houses and everyday goods would be as the city needs to fund the cost of the Olympics somehow either in state taxes/duties or car rego or fuel excise taxes... If i was moving from overseas, I would look at affordability, work/employment, income to cost.... Brisbane is a beautiful city I rather visit Brisbane for a family holiday than live there.....

@ThatJohnstonLife well I've been in Perth since 1981 (in Sydney b4 and Glasgow b4 Syd) my family and my wife's family are all here. We got use to tge simplicity and quietness of Perth. I don't see us moving. The income to cost ratio is good in Perth and we saving a lot$ for our retirement. Once kids are grown up we will retire abroad in Malaysia where we can stretch our dollar further and live like kings. Malaysia is only a 5hr flight back to Perth same distance as Brisbane. MM2H visa allow us in and out for 10yrs.

Fair, I am retired and no longer need the daily convenience of a car, but if I can and do travel EVERYWHERE by public transport so should many other people, even those working. Unless you need your vehicle for carrying tools etc, then ditch the car. You will save yourself an awful lot of money, but then again you may lose your self identity, after all you can't show off your new legs, can you? I actually object to my taxes being spent on more and more new road projects. Spend it on more public transport which have thought out routes and high frequency. Get out of your cars (often with only one occupant) stop being so lazy and help save the planet.

Yeeeah, I've lived in Sydney, and that place is trash. I love brisbane since moving, 20% off rego, even tho it was already cheaper than NSW, 50c public transport, $1000 provided by the state for electricity. Nice weather and beaches, friendly people...have no idea what that person's video is on about, perhaps it's an old one?

Brisbane is a typical Australian city , over dependent on personal car use , urban sprawl, invented by American car manufacturers to sell cars, has been adopted by all Australian cities , most which have very low populations in global terms. If you complain about traffic congestion now just wait till the massive increase in immigration has the effect of increasing car ownership. Anyway Brisbane is a burden on the rest of Australia , remember that on average it has catastrophic flooding every forty years or so and then expects to be saved by federal tax dollars, the city should be closed down and moved to a better location.
