I've noticed A LOT of Bears fans in the comments with many different opinions, which is awesome! Really glad to see so many new people get involved in the community and discuss something they're passionate about. Healthy, respectful debate is always encouraged around here and I'm working to get involved in each discussion in the comments section to give my thoughts! I wanted to share my brief thoughts on the debate. I genuinely think the Bears could do no wrong at their current stage as long as they get either Caleb Williams or Marvin Harrison Jr. At that point, it really becomes a balancing act of what you prefer: (a) Caleb Williams + resetting the rookie contract window + whatever resources they get from trading fields; or (b) Keeping and paying Fields + whatever resources they get from trading #1 + whatever they lose from trading back into 3 to get MHJ (if they need to/want to). Both are great options, but what do I prefer? At this stage, I lean towards option (a). By taking Caleb, you reset the rookie window, allowing a bit more time to continue to build up the team around him without having to spend extra money on Fields. Although I have been vocal in real life supporting Fields in the past, I don't think I've made it clear on my channel so far that I believed heavily in Fields after year 1. However, I recognize that he has continued to struggle with some of the same weaknesses that he came into the NFL with. At times he shows flashes of being an unbelievable player, but he has yet to put it together consistently for someone who has played 35 games and it's risky attempting to hold out hope that he'll be able to do it in year 4 right before you have to decide on his 5th year option and then pay him long term. Also, this is a fantastic (and very deep) WR class, so taking Caleb doesn't eliminate the choice to get another great WR. Especially since the class is not super deep in some of the areas that the Bears need most (#2 CB, #2 Edge Rusher, IOL). I think the Bears are better off restarting the learning curve with a new QB, with a ton of upside, and grabbing 1 or 2 WRs from this really deep class and supplementing the depth of other positions in free agency and later in the draft. This is not to say that option (b) isn't also great, it's just my preference. MHJr and DJ Moore would be a nasty WR core for Fields and would significantly increase his margin for error. His rushing ability, plus Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson (a RB tandem I really like), will put LBs in flux and allow MHJr and DJ Moore to win over the top and in the intermediate areas of the field (if Fields can progress to the point where he's finding and hitting those throws in between the LBs and Safeties). Obviously, the extra resources from trading #1 would set them up down the line to add guys in future draft classes that are better stocked at positions the Bears need. Anyways, my main point is that I think the Bears are in a great spot and I'm excited to see what happens! I hope you guys appreciate the nuanced take and my relative preference of one over the other, rather than just choosing one thing and refusing to acknowledge the potential of both options. I'd love to hear if you guys agree, disagree, don't really have an opinion, or think I'm missing something. Also, I'm very fine with people insulting me or making valid criticisms- there are quite a few on this video and I appreciate all who brought great perspectives on some of the video's flaws. However, to some of the others, if you're going to disagree or insult the video/me, atleast watch the whole video / read this whole paragraph first so we can have a substantive discussion 😉(I kid, everyone is entitled to post what they want - that's what the internet is for!). What worries me about Caleb as a Bears fan is that many of his flaws are the same thing people say about Justin Fields and he didn't look very good against some of the top defenses that he went up against such as ND and Oregon.

@@tccrypto8392 I would agree that he has some very similar flaws, but I'd counter that, by resetting the rookie window, you're now taking a guy who has those flaws and more time to improve them over a guy who has those flaws and has struggled to make consistent improvement on them if that makes sense. My counter is really more for the sake of discussion though as, like I said, I think sticking with Fields could be a very good option for them too!

I would agree that it makes financial sense to reset the QB clock. However, I get a bit nervous as a Bears fan as the last draft they did have the opportunity to take the 1st QB in the draft they traded up for Trubisky in a draft that had Patrick Mahomes and the rest has been bad Bears history. Not to mention if you take a look at the QBs that have gone #1 overall the last 20 years, most have been a disappointment or at bare minimum have never lived up to the hype of being a #1 overall pick.@@TheJumboPackage

I see more Josh Allen than I do Mahomes or Kyler. Caleb lowers his head and fights for yards similar to Josh Allen. Mahomes and Kyler both avoid contact as much as possible. He also has similar issues that Josh Allen had to overcome.

Remember how everyone saying Bryce Young was THE quarterback in the 2023 draft. Not a single first overall pick QB has won a superbowl since Payton Manning. That was a very long time ago. A top QB could get you wins but its a total team that gets you championships. The bears should just trade the pick again for even a bigger haul to rebuild their team

I would definitely agree that it's not just the QB who wins the championship, but I would push back against you a little bit in that I think the QB has a lot to do with a team's ability to get in position to win a championship in the first place. But jimmy goropollo and trey lance was on the same team too but they NEVER played as well as Purdy. Very hard to evaluate QBs. I thought CJ Stroud was gonna be a bust cause he had the worst QB IQ test. But he is awesome! All i know is that marvin harison jr is a freak generational talent. We are assuming that if the Bears pick Caleb Williams and he wins a championship, that he is winning it as a Bear. I could see the Bears getting Caleb but they really need to fix the line. No QB is gonna do well behind that line. Plus they would miss out on MHJ then. And its a very good chance that he will be a top WR in the league. Imagine the reaction of the Bears fans if MHJ becomes the best WR in the league and hall of famer. Physically he is bigger than his dad. They also need a new offensive coordinator

Daniels has the best deep ball in the Draft (per Analytics) and has great field awareness and tremendous wheels. He is much further along than Lamar was when Lamar was drafted but as we see Lamar continue to shine as he has so far this year, it can only make the stock of Daniels rise as we approach Draft day.

We don't know their capacity to learn, their willingness to learn, and how quick they can pick up complex concepts and implement them. So many of the greats are guys who are motivated by the desire to keep getting better, so hopefully that will be him and every other QB in this draft!

He misses a lot more reads than you think. Youve automatically assumed theyre turned down... thats not necessarily the case. The other factor, and its one crippling Bryce Young, is that your pockets have much less space in the NFL. Meaning defenders will close off a lot of those last second launches to the middle.

Great and informative breakdown. As a Bears fan, I'd love to get your breakdown of Justin Fields, compared to Williams and Maye (especially if you've studied Fields in college). Based on your assessment of Williams and Maye, it sounds like they have a lot of similar issues that Fields had/has (footwork, not seeing open receivers sometimes, etc) - and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on if you believe either Williams or Maye show clear signs of being significantly better in the NFL than Fields.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! Honestly, I wish I could provide that type of assessment, but I didn't scout Fields coming out of college so it would be difficult for me to give you a substantive answer without just making something up for the sake of giving an answer. From what I've seen from Fields in the NFL, I'd agree that it's a lot of the same issues w/these prospects + the fact that he still makes a lot of the same mistakes (e.g., missing open receivers, holding the ball too long, struggling to make it through his reads at times, inconsistent accuracy) after three seasons. He shows some incredible flashes of playmaking ability and accuracy so it's not impossible for him to be "the guy" for Chicago, but it's concerning that he hasn't been able to polish up his game in the 35 games he's played in the NFL. I was a pretty big believer in Fields after year one, so I still see the same upside in him - it's really more the fact that he's going into year 4 and making some of the same mistakes that concerns me about his future. Let me know if you agree or disagree!

While I really like Fields, his ability to make anticipatory throws is far worse than Williams. Also, William's ablility to feel pressure in the pocket and respond is significantly better than Fields. Also, while Fields makes some really athletic moves to extend plays, William's comfort and movement in the pocket is much more natural, and buys time more consistnetly. That, and the fact that William's release is SO much faster than Fields make this comparison really difficult for Fields to match up. Realize that Field's best year, he had 41 touchdowns, but still only threw for 3200 yards (233 per game). That is a crazy amount of TD's for yards that low. Williams had 4600 yards last yr when he played 14 games, and 3600 with 12 games this year. Fields is never going to average much over 200 yards in the NFL. It is not realistic that his stats will get better than they were in college. Williams averaged over 325 last yr, and 302 this year.

I think what makes Williams short coming more of a big deal than just nitpicks is many of those short comings have to be trained out and fixed as early as possible by good NFL coaching which I doubt he will find being a top 3 pick and if he has any lack of passion for football he may not be driven enough to reinvent himself for NFL style football. He's clearly very athletic and could be a very dangerous QB but I think if he doesnt have good coaches around him (which is most likely going to be the case) he will be the next Justin Fields or especially Zach Wilson who was very athletic and talented in college but didnt transition to the pros very well and his confidence has never recovered and he plays like he's terrified and over thinks everything. Also seeing how good CJ Stroud has been this year shows that throwing with anticipation is the most important QB skill at the NFL level. Williams really only throws to wide open dudes which will almost never happen in the pros, so he is gonna turn into Justin Fields 2.0 holding on to the ball for too long getting sacked waiting for guys to be wide open. Whereas CJ Stroud releases the ball before guys have even made their cut. That is the only way to survive as a rookie QB in totals NFL and with how much Williams plays a run and gun style I think he will struggle to change his playing style to be able to throw with anticipation more often than not instead of running a scramble drill offense.

Very possible! That's the unfortunate balance that needs to be struck to create a successful QB: good coaching combined with a coachable player who is willing to learn. Harder to find than it seems because of all the tiny factors that go into it (personalities, learning styles, surrounding situation, etc). I think you have some legitimate concerns, but I have a bit more faith than you do that his problems will be fixed in the NFL. But we both agree they need to be fixed!

Excellent breakdown! I'm a Bears fan and I'm struggling with wanting the Bears to draft him. I feel that Justin is making progress, but I am often hollering for Justin to "throw the ball, Justin!" I also feel that the play calling was subpar this season. What I liked about your analysis of Caleb's strengths is that he is always looking to throw the ball, whereas Justin may look to run. He has improved in this area though. On the other hand, your analysis of his weaknesses is giving me a lot of pause. I also think about the potential draft haul that we could get for trading out of the first pick and potentially getting a Marvin Harrison Jr. and maybe Latu or Verse. Your breakdown did too good of a job, lol! You have a new subscriber though!

It's the pocket presence. Caleb's got it. He knows how to navigate within the pocket and go thru his progressions. He keeps his head up and eyes scanning. Drake Maye and even Justin Fields don't have the same pocket presence. Fields just ducks and bails out with the slightest pressure. That's the difference.

You have a few years to bring him along on a cheap deal and surround him with talent, whereas with Fields you need to pay him soon. I think Caleb also has a higher ceiling at the moment, given what we’ve seen from Fields. I don’t really hate either decision!

Nice breakdown of Caleb and Mayes in your other video. Bears sitting at #1 pick so far. Justin has the same positives of these quarterbacks, but also all of the negatives. The problem with Justin is he is going into the 4th year and still retains the negatives---holding ball too long, lack of anticipation, turnover, seeing open receivers, suspect mechanics, lack of awareness in the pocket; whether due to poor coaching (that is obvious) , lack of weapons and protection, or just plainly does not have it.

I see Justin's glass 1/2 full and not 1/2 empty. Even though he has had a lot of negatives, I see definite improvement with him this year. He has not regressed like other QBs (Mac Jones, Sam Howell) but is actually making strides. He has a lot of untapped potential and I just think proper coaching could eliminate many of the bad habits he has. He many never be as polished as fans want him to but if they can accept his flaws like Buffalo fans accept Josh Allen's faults, everything should be okay. I mean, after all, Chicago has won 4 out of the last 5 games so we should always look at these little but significant things.

Thank you for a thorough analysis. Sad to say, as a Bear fan I hadn't even looked at any of Caleb Williams highlights or breakdowns. I think the biggest concern is operating in structure with the most glaring aspect being his failure to direct the ball to specific spots. You can get your receivers destroyed with such a callous approach. And I feel his freewheeling style allows him to make the throws he makes on the run, but it will lead to heartbreaking fumbles and interceptions in the NFL. He will have to adjust quickly or go through a painful transformation. I'd love to see your analysis of Justn Fields coming out of Ohio State and see how accurate you are in your breakdowns.

Thanks for watching! I think he'll reel it in a little bit at the NFL level, but obviously there is no way to know for sure. As for Fields, I unfortunately didn't watch his college tape coming out so I can't say for sure if I would've accurately predicted his NFL play. However, every single person who watches draft tape is going to have hits and misses, so I don't think one hit or miss will make or break their credibility!

As a Bears fan, after seeing this and your Drake Maye video, I think the Bears need to grab Caleb Williams. If you're putting him in the same conversation as Mahomes and Allen, I'm definitely in for that. I don't think Fields would ever be as good as that, unfortunately. I think they need to trade him. Trading the 1st pick to keep Fields and try to build up the team more would be a bad idea in my opinion. In the current division situation, the Lions are good, and the Packers found something in Jordan Love which is also scary. The way I see it, the Bears don't stand a chance in winning the division unless they catch lightning in a bottle with Caleb Williams, which they very well may.

Nice assessment, makes me feel more confident if the Bears decide to move on from Fields. I feel like we saw more of this accuracy in Caleb's sophomore season, but then again I didn't watch every USC game. His play vs Notre Dame this year gave me concerns whereas in his sophomore season vs ND he looked like an all-pro. My only question is how serious Caleb is about not wanting to play for the Bears? We've seen what happens when a top QB prospect would rather play elsewhere and was willing to follow through.

Caleb reminds me of Aaron Rodgers in terms of his game. Moves to throw, makes full field reads, throws into windows with different arm angles. My only issue with his game is I doubt he will be able to have some of the longer extended throws in the NFL the rush gets there in the NFL. Luckily though he doesn’t rely solely on extending the play. He can throw with timing and deliver from the pocket when he needs to.

I have a really good feeling about how this will come together for the Bears. Obviously nothing is ever certain, but I think DJ Moore and Keenan Allen are excellent, reliable WRs to pair with Williams and he'll have Kmet, Swift, Herbert, Everett, and Velus Jones as well. His size kinda concerns me. He’s listed at 6’1” so I’d bet he’s more like 6’0”. But I read somewhere his hands are on the smaller side. And the 32 fumbles in 36 games is very concerning me. I love Fields and if this guy is “can’t miss,” I’m good with it. But, like most Bears fans on thus thread, I’m torn. Every day I change my mind. Today, I want to keep Fields.

I really like Fields but he isn't as decisive as Williams seems to be. Fields also has a slow dropback, he takes longer to throw due to his high, slow release angle, & ultimately I would trust Williams out of the pocket more than Fields. When it comes playoff time, you face the best defenses & they will scheme running QBs to the pocket. Thats why I believe rushing should always be secondary but a QB like Fields definitely relies too much on it. If I'm the Bears, i already know what i have in Fields & so even if Williams busts, i didn't think Fields would win it all anyway. I'm trading Justin for at least a 2nd round pick, drafting Williams at #1, & then with pick 8-11, I'm taking one of those top 3 WRs assuming one is left to pair w/ Moore & Kmet thus giving Williams a solid group to come into as a rookie on top of an already improving OLine & one of the best defenses in the league in terms of stopping the run & getting takeaways. This would be the best team the Bears can offer a rookie QB. Trubisky & Fields never had this type of supporting cast when they came into the league

You’re misrepresenting how the cap works. The signing bonus is prorated across the course of the deal, so that $27million is prorated across the 4 years, adding up to 6.75mil per year. For an example, look at how Bryce Young’s contract is structured. Young’s total cap hit over 4 seasons is around 38-40 million total, with gradually increasing cap hits (same signing bonus every year + increasing base salary every season). The largest cap hit Bryce has is in the last year of his deal at 12mil and the cap hit in his first year is only 7mil. The same logic will apply to Caleb’s contract if taken #1 overall, but Caleb will be slightly more expensive. You’re correct that Fields’s cap hit in the next two years w/the two year option is around 31 mil, but that doesn’t include his next contract. So the options are Caleb for 4 years at 41 million total (with gradually increasing cap hits starting at around 8mil in first year and ending up around 13mil in his 4th year) or Fields for 2 years at 31mil total + whatever you have to give him to keep him past his 5th year option. Obviously the 41/4 is less per year than 31/2.

Helmet scouting is not fair at all. People said the same thing about CJ Stroud and look at him now. Just because people wore the same uniform and played for completely different coaches, with completely different talent around them, and went to completely different teams, in completely different time periods doesn't mean a player can't be successful. You may discount this point as unimportant, but if you look at the statistics of warm weather college QBs playing in cold weather outdoor NFL cities, you will find a dramatic drop off in performance compared to other QBs that grew up in the cold like some Big Ten QBs. Honestly, I don't think they can go wrong with anything. JF1 has lots of potential and his floor is raised by adding a guy like a MHJ + whoever they can get w/extra draft picks if they trade out of 1 and trade back into 3 to take MHJ. On the other hand, Caleb resets the rookie contract window and can probably do quite a lot of what Fields can do now, plus the potential for him to be even better for the team. Going to be an interesting decision!

Great analysis. If I’m the bears I personally think this kid is way too much of a risk. Especially with a generational wideout there If I’m the bears I’m moving off the pick to go to number 2 if someone really really wants Caleb. Give me the assets. I’ll take the sure thing and you can take the risk. From there if I’m the bears I’d rather draft a QB later or just give fields another year vs draft Caleb at one and give up mhj and all the extra asset. Also way too many character risks with this kid too. If you get an extra first for this kid you’ll probably be drafting again next year in the top 5 because Caleb is gonna turn the ball over a lot, especially on a bad team like the patriots cardinals etc.

The issue is we don’t know exactly who they 1 or perhaps 2 guys are. But regardless… I know the bears overall will be better if they don’t try and guess who that guy might be and just take the assets and build around the guy … because the only things you know for sure 1. Justin is getting better 2. Justin is well liked and has good character 3. Keeping Justin gets you a better overall team. 4. And he can make most throws albeit it not from crazy platforms like Caleb. So imo don’t shoot for the stars on this one. I have major concerns about Caleb’s character In 3 years I truly believe people are gonna say… Jayden Daniel’s was just as electric electric as fields but way more accurate as a passer. But it’s hard to make that move when you have so many assets on the line.

As a Bears fan, I just don't see him as some must take upgrade over Fields, especially since his issues, are largely the same ones Fields has at times, and the reasons given, are a lot of same ones Fields has on top of it...plus, some really horrible coaching from the OC who refuses to gameplan to his abilities most of the time. What most of those calling for them to draft Caleb never seem to mention, is do they think Getsy should stay? Because if Fields isn't the type of QB for Getsy, then neither is Williams, they're too similar and on top of having to adjust to playing under center more often, he'd likely have to deal with Getsy refusing to call plays that fit his ability, further handicapping...really don't want to see Getsy ruin another young mans career.....And if they get rid of Getsy, then, well other than the issue of having Fields in yet another new system with another new OC, you can negate a lot of that by actually choosing an OC who wants to run a system that would actually benefit Fields and the talent around him. The line is still suspect, but improving. Either way, good breakdown. I just don't see him as an upgrade over Fields, especially with other issues on the Bears team. If I'm the Bears GM, I'm sticking with Fields through his rookie contract, bringing in an OC who actually wants to work with him, drafting MHJ to add a second legit WR (right now he basically has Moore at WR and Kmet at TE as the only really reliable targets), getting an upgrade at Left tackle (I like Braxton Jones, and he has a lot of potential, but he's not elite at this stage and it's an important position worthy of an upgrade to let them settle it in training camp, either way, you end up with more depth at the position) and in the 3rd or 4th, add a Center because, my god, that is a huge weakness. They could also use more depth and upgrades at the guard position...while they can and will add some of that depth in free agency, the best bet to get players of the future long term, is going to be the draft, and if they have the 1st overall pick, the thing that makes the most sense to me, is to trade down, even if only one spot, to get additional picks and still get MHJ (though there seems to be several really good options at WR in this draft who would be great additions alongside Moore). Hell, with this strategy, it's likely the Bears would end up with three 1st round picks in the 2025 draft. If Fields falls to pieces or hasn't shown he can be the guy at the end of his rookie contract even with a better OC who is playing to his abilities, then well, you have plenty of draft capital to move up from wherever they would end up drafting to go get one of the top QB's in the 2025 draft. Drafting a QB is always a gamble, and with the defense improving much faster than the offense (largely due to coaching in my opinion), you don't want to waste 2 or 3 years of a competitive defense on a new QB who may, or may not, show you any real ability at the NFL level. No matter who is QB of the Bears though, I think it's clear Getsy can't be the OC, especially for Williams who has so many of the same pros and cons of Fields. It would be insanity. (Sadly, I've seen more than one Bears fan insist that we can't properly evaluate Getsy as an OC because of Fields...which, is backwards thinking, good coaches will adjust to the players on their roster, not insist on calling plays for the guys he wishes he had on his roster...he fails to do that, and that's the evaluation in and of itself) Just my 2 cents (and then some) appreciate the breakdown.

First, thank you for watching and for commenting your thoughts, I appreciate it! I'd agree that Caleb definitely has some of the same issues as Fields did coming out of college. I think that the benefit in taking Caleb would be to reset the rookie window, because they're going to need to make a decision on Fields's 5th year option next season and then decide whether they want to pay him. But to your point, it's kind of a balancing act of what they'd rather have: (a) Caleb Williams + resetting the rookie contract window + whatever they get from trading fields; or (b) Fields + Whatever they get from trading #1 + whatever they lose from trading back into 3 to get MHJ. It's definitely a tough debate, because you stand to gain more from a team building perspective with the resources you get from trading #1, but you're also still a bit in limbo w/a QB who has struggled to improve some of the same problems he's shown since day 1. But of course, just to equivocate some more, its very possible they'll draft Caleb and have the exact same issue down the road with way less resources. I don't envy their position, but at the same time I do because I almost think they can do no wrong as long as they get either Caleb or Marvin Harrison Jr. As for Getsy, I'd agree he definitely started out the year struggling to scheme around Fields's strengths. He's gotten a bit better, but still not great or even good at playing to Fields's strengths. I'd love to see Fields with someone like a Shane Steichen who has worked in a lot of different schemes w/different QB types (Worked w/Norv Turner & Rivers in SD, then Turner & Weeden in CLE, went back to LAC to work w/Justin Herbert underneath different OCs, then completely changed up by working w/Hurts & Richardson in Philly & Indy). Getsy spent a lot of time in Green Bay working with Rodgers, McCarthy, and Lafleur so he's had a little bit of exposure to different things, but no one like Fields and I think if he were to get better at it, it's definitely going to take time so I'm not sure if they want to afford him the time to do that w/Caleb or move in another direction. I know that was kind of rambling, but I wanted to address some of the main points of your comment. Let me know what you think!

@@TheJumboPackage I don't disagree with you, but to me, resetting the contract isn't a huge deal given the cap space the Bears have to work with. If they were still under the previous regime, it would be urgent, but Poles has done an excellent job of creating cap space and stocking up on resources (draft picks) to allow a lot more flexibility. Picking up his option will cost them a little over 23 mil I do believe, but it would give him two full seasons under any new OC who might be brought in (and I love your suggestion and think he would be a great selection. They need a proven OC primarily so they know he would be willing and able to do what Getsy has not, which is call plays to the players ability, not just Fields, but also that O-line, which is improving but still isn't good enough for what Getsy really wants to do) I'll understand if the Bears do move on from Fields, but it will also just be yet another QB the Bears of failed to develop and potentially ruined their career, though I think if he were to move on to a team like Atlanta, with some of the weapons they have there already, a lot of Bears fans might be regretting that move midway through next season. The coaching has been the biggest factor...and to me, the biggest indictment of Getsy is that we saw what Fields did last season, when he did finally learn to call plays to fit the talent on the offense (which was basically just Fields, the running game, and sometimes Kmet and Mooney, the line was just horrible, though Braxton Jones improved as the year progressed)...Fields kept the Bears competitive in almost every game. They lost 7 games by one score or less, but the defense was bottom of the league as well then. This season, many of us expected him to build off of that, expand it, incorporate some of his own system of pocket passing now that the line was improved but primarily building off of what worked and should work even better now that Fields has an additional WR, who is a legit no.1 option...instead, it was a stubborn insistence on forcing him to stay in the pocket. It does not work for Fields for a few reasons, some of which are (IMO) there was no real trust in the line yet at the start of the season. They hadn't proven they were improved yet, mainly because they weren't, not all around, in large part due to the fact that we started off with two starters being injured or unavailable anyway, I don't think our starting line played a game together until after Fields was injured this season. Getsy struggles in play calling beyond the initial script of 15 or so plays. He's predictable, makes it easier for teams to simply know what play is coming, unless he's allowed for Fields to move the pocket and sort of do a bit of practiced improv...Fields was already improving on keeping his eyes downfield when he scrambled last season, the problem then, was that there wasn't really anyone getting open, but we still saw some magic happen because he didn't just take off and run, he was moving with his eyes downfield just in case someone did, and a few times they managed to do it. (though, usually he had to tuck it and run, but he was looking on many of those). Going into this season, with a legit no.1 WR, Kmet, Mooney (who sadly has really fallen off and seems to have checked out...reminding me of the last year of Allen Robinson far too often), it should have meant just huge improvements on similar plans as last season...it never really materialized. We did see Fields showing his passer ability in back to back games before his injury though, (when the line was mostly healthy, I think maybe we were only missing one of our starters by that point? or my timeline could be off, but the line was holding up better either way). I think that's his true capacity and to me, that's more than a "flash"...I feel like it's not always Fields who is inconsistent, but the play calling. Either way, Poles will make the decision. I just don't see that "instant upgrade" in any QB in this draft class that some Bears fans seem to see. I do see some big red flags around a few of the guys, and not just reported ones that nobody is backing up, but ones we've been able to see with our own eyes (that rumor of Fields not having a work ethic, not being a leader, before his draft, certainly didn't turn out to be true...which is another concern I'd have in trading him. He is a leader in that locker room. The guys are questioning why this is even a discussion and getting a bit irritated with the media asking about JF1, with Moore saying that he doesn't think the QB's in this class are better than Fields, Jaylon Johnson talking about how Fields is their guy and a leader they all look to, etc)...and we've certainly seen players sort of tap dance around questions about the QB if there is any doubt in the locker room...(sort of how Eberflus danced around a question about Getsy recently..when directly asked about the offense, he replied with how "Luke is a great guy" type of response) I'd hate to see the Bears blow up the improving chemistry by moving on from a guy they all believe in, and going with someone who will have to prove themselves from scratch, and who may already have some obstacles and preconceived notions that may take longer to overcome, if ever. Poles will decide though at some point. I understand your points, I don't disagree with them, I don't know that I feel it's as big of a positive to reset that rookie QB contract though. Too many holes still exist so the extra picks from trading down from 1st are a pretty big deal. We'd have three 1st rounders next draft with some interesting/talented QB's coming out then as well...But, it's all a gamble. Seems like a lot of QB's taken 1st overall never live up to their expectations. I'd rather keep building, knowing that if we have to move on from him, we have the cap space, the draft capital, and by then, a solid team, to go ahead and do that in 2025 or 2026, but I'll understand if Poles sees it differently. (I think I rambled more than you did, it's sort of my style lol)

@@mr.guillotine3766 Haha, I ramble a lot too so no worries. I thought your comment was really interesting and had a lot of interesting points! Specifically the one about Fields struggling in the beginning of the season due to lack of trust in the OL. I think that's such an interesting point that I hadn't really thought about because he had been bludgeoned by their OL the prior year, so he needed time for them to prove that they were actually going to holdup before he was willing to sit in the pocket and beat teams solely through the air. I also agree it doesn't make sense to limit his game in that way because beating teams w/his legs also makes it easier to win through the air because the threat of the run is there. It's also interesting to note that since their defense has improved in the last few weeks, the team has looked much better as a whole so Fields has much more help and has looked much improved. In terms of resetting the rookie window, for the Bears, it's not so much contract oriented, as it's time oriented (i.e., they have more time to continue building the team before they need to shell out money for a QB), but I definitely see you're point that they have a lot of cap space and their cap is not much of a concern. I also agree that Fields will be awesome in Atlanta if they wind up keeping Arthur Smith and totally get your worries about failing to develop another QB (I'm a Jets fan, so I don't even need to explain why I understand it haha).

Gonna pile on from a Bears fans perspective. I really liked your breakdown and appreciate the work you put in. I’m a JF1 guy but I see the appeal. The pro comp feels like it’s spot on, I see CW as a boom or bust prospect. If he hits he’s gonna hit big and live up to the hype. But the bust potential is a huge concern. I don’t like the “generational talent” term being thrown around bcuz he doesn’t wow me like a Manning or Luck did. He needs to land in a perfect situation and I don’t think the Bears are that situation. I’ll cheer for whoever the Bears decide on if they stay in the 1 spot. And again I appreciate your analysis.

Thank you, I really appreciate your comments! But I also appreciate the nuance you approach the situation with. I think what gets lost on some of the commenters here is that they may spend a lot of time hating on Caleb and then he'll (possibly) be on the team in a year and they'll have have to live with it and support him. I think it's best to keep an open mind. I agree he definitely has some bust potential, but I think he has a higher floor than most people realize due to his ability to play in structure when he wants to / needs to. cant blame him for feeling like he can do something special every play, i think thats an abundance of confidence... however he'll need to learn to take simpler plays early in the nfl, otherwise what seems like confidence could become arrogance... i see alot of mocks having him go to washington, and id be thrilled for them to finallly get a chance to derail the qb carousel, but he'll need to throw quick and be ready to scramble behind that o line.
