Is Castle and Key 7 Year Old Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon Better Than Weller Antique?

just opened a bottle procured in Indianapolis (9/29/24) Proof: 108.5 Nose: very dry, toasted grain forward, very slight marshmallow component. After opening up a bit, I also get a faint lemony note (lemon pledge?) All in all, nose doesn’t really have much going on and you have to really dig for notes. Palate: holy cow! The palate doesn’t match the nose! Lots going on. Very sweet up front on tip of tongue with a bright and rich caramel Creme Brûlée. It then transitions to sweet cinnamon candy mid tongue with some nice graham cracker notes. That cinnamon lingers long on side of mouth. Moving back into palate there’s a nice mild sweet curaçao deep at edges of palate. Finish: there’s an overall mild menthol- like cooling sensation that coats the roof and back of the mouth; not so much a flavor as a sensation. The cooling drifts a short way down throat as does a bit of cinnamon. Slight Kentucky hug in upper chest but any further finish is medium in back of palate. Yet, the mouth notes, especially the cooling and sweetness hang on in pleasant ways for a while. Summary: This is an easy bourbon to really like; I just really wish the nose had more going on; if so, score would be much higher.

Picked up a bottle of batch 1 last week and it’s by far their best bourbon released to date. I loved visiting the distillery but I didn’t buy any bottles from them. Had this been out when I was there I would have purchased several.

I really enjoyed this pour from them. I put OWA and Bardstown in front of it but it's still one I don't want to run out of. Their distillery is a must visit especially when the flowers are in bloom.

I live about 5 miles north of Castle & Key. Very nice to walk around for free, with free access to their gift shop and bar. Glenn's Creek next door has better bourbon, but it costs more and their tours are not as fancy. I have only tried one Castle & Key, their regular bourbon, and to me it tasted much younger than its 4 years of aging. The bottles do look nice. My favorite wheater is the 90 proof Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey made in Louisville for $31.

It’s sitting on shelves around my area. I’ll probably get one but I’ve heard conflicting reviews on castle and key products so I’m a bit hesitant. Here in my area the state is having a very large single barrel drop on Saturday. And I really want an Old Route 8 but I’ll have to see if it comes close to my area. Enjoy🥃🥃🥃

I'd definitely grab that Old Route 8 if you can. I think this wheated is definitely an improvement on their previous offerings. Maybe they are finally hitting their stride? Time will tell! - Glenn

Are you willing to ask when you go there to interview them about any of there early releases and what went wrong. Or what they learned and changed. How did they fix it. Why Marianne quite a literally “and I quote…”I ran away with my husband to join the circus” - 1st woman master distiller. Of Castle and Key.

I'm not a professional bourbon taster (even though I play one on KZbin), but it would be quite an accomplishment to keep something in the barrel for 7 years and come out tasting "young"...thanks for watching nonetheless! - Charlie
