I'm working my way through all of Darren's videos about grading. I like the way he explains things and he genuinely seems to know what he's talking about - he's not just a youtuber with a free copy of Resolve. This video is a good example of how well he understands things, especially the bit about order of operation later in the video.

Hi Darren. Apologies for my previous comment I pressed send by mistake. As always thank you for another incredible episode. This is a prime example that set's your videos apart from every one else's, it's not just showing us the Colour Boost & Saturation. Moreover, the real education begins explaining the difference between them and how they effect the Colour Grade thereby, improving the appearance of the image. This has certainly change the way I'm going to grade from now on. Thanks again Darren, for your Invaluable Help. See you Tuesday, stay safe mate

Great video as always, Darren. It's funny, I have a lot of experience with music production, so in Resolve I tend to gravitate towards the curves as they resemble an EQ. That 'high pass filter' you applied to the Sat v Sat is something I often do to clean up slight colour casts, just as I'd use the same shape to cut the sub bass in a track. There's a surprisingly large amount of crossover between the two disciplines in fact, which I think is pretty cool. Anyway, great work, carry on.

Very helpful clarification of the actual consequences of the order of operations. The example of Color Boost was right on target. It has zero effect on the grey scale with offset applied because Boost is prior to Offset, so it is boosting grey, which has no color. So many times tried sat and boost and not going where we wanted: now we have at least one good explanation. Cheers! Mike

These videos were extremely useful and I love the way and pace you explained everything. I was hooked and you got a new fan. This is my story, but maybe your channel gets discovered more because it seems Davinci Resolve is getting more popular in a nice that is watching KZbin? Nice video again! However, I think there’s an important misconception in it. About what you say at 3:48 in. Negative color boost values do not attack the high saturated areas first. From the manual: “Lowering color boost from 0 to -100 decreases color intensity, but low-saturation parts of the image are lowered more aggressively.”

The color boost seems to be a widely misunderstood tool for some people. There was a massive thread on Facebook once discussing it. Patrick inhofer, Marc and several heavy weights discussing it. Was really interesting - it was started by a youTube tut that had it a tad wrong ( how it worked ) - Patrick ended up doing a video on mixinglight really testing it. Was really interesting how it worked under the hood. The workflow chart is a really important part that doesn't get shown, so again well done my friend. You are living up to my referrals and making me look good for referring people to your videos in the first place - ON to 50k . Thanks Darren.
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim. Yes, the order of operations is so important in this scenario as saturation/colour boost can be very damaging to a shot if not used carefully. I use CST's to get me almost there so my movements are not as large as in this episode but trying to keep that out of the equation for the explanation here.

Where to find the Operations Within Corrector Nodes Table --- Addendum For all of us searching for that hyper-informative table illustrating the order of Color Page node operations, it appears in Chapter 141, Image Processing Order of Operations, of the May, 2021 Resolve Reference Manual. The chapter begins on page 2806. Page 2807 contains a very useful flow chart illustrating the order of Overall Image Processing. Page 2808 contains the Operations Within Corrector Nodes flow chart that Darren shares in this video -- with a more in-depth explanation than he can give us in eight minutes. Super helpful and informative for us newbie-amateurs! As always, Darren, first rate information, perfectly delivered.

Hi Darren, as always great vid. Kinda confused about the "logistics" (so to speak) for the operation chart. So is this a technical route Resolve uses in its order of operations, as opposed to a good workflow suggestion? For example, if I put a "color boost" node AFTER the "temperature tint" node, the "color boost" will still reach back and technically affect the operation of the "temperature tint?" Of course every series node will VISUALLY affect the next one, but I mean mathematically, the way it functions. im probably overthinking it and hope that made sense. and thanks so much for this tutorial. And dont change a thing on your channel, its perfect. no long winded introductions or montages. just good solid info from the jump

Hi Teddy. The order of operations is the order if you apply multiple actions to a SINGLE node. Your node order has priority over this. So, if you only had one node - this would be the processing order. Hope that helps?

@@DarrenMostyn Ahh thank you so much Darren. Im experimenting with bracketing exposure (like the old photo days) but with ISO slides on the same clip and was getting strange things. I know that was more of a technical question but you helped so much.. thank you my brother. stay strong and keep smiling

So does that mean you do a node for each Saturation and Color Boost and Saturation node is before?

Color boost saturates the colors of the LOG footage before the IDT and the CST, saturate does it after.

in a colour managed workflow yes...but not in this way as I am using CST to control the path.

3'49" this is wrong, Color Boost always affects least saturated areas more. Also, Vectorscope signal going beyond the red target doesn't mean it's not broadcast safe.
@DarrenMostyn

Color boost in a negative direction as at 3.49 will pull out high saturation and yes the vectorscope will not show what is illegal for broadcast as this also depends on saturation in the luminance but it certainly gives a good indication that you are getting close and it is good practise to stay within the guides to guarantee broadcast safe. Sorry for any confusion.

@@DarrenMostyn yes it will pull out high saturation, but you say it will do this more than it will the low saturated areas, which is incorrect. As I said, Color boost always affects the least saturated areas more, doesn't matter whether you are adding or taking away. Likewise, the normal saturation control will always affects the more saturated areas over the least, so you should have just used that control there.

To prove this, take the SMPTE colour bars and reduce Saturation until the 100% swatches hit the 75% vectorscope targets. In a new version, do the same with Color Boost. Now compare where the 75% swatches are in the scopes between the 2 versions.

Further proof involves using the Color Warper to translate all values on a given axis until the 100% swatches hit the 75% targets which will affect all values identically.
