Investment in real estate could lead to rental income or capital gains when you dispose of the assets. If you are investing via a SPV, you may receive dividend as well. Both dividend and rental income will be taxable as per the applicable tax slab depending on your total income in India. Basic exemption of 2.5 lakhs can be utilised against this income. In case of capital gains when you dispose of the asset, the capital gain will be chargeable at 20% to 30% depending on whether it is long term or short term in nature. However, the buyer will have to deduct TDS higher than your tax liability. We can help you get a lower TDS certificate in that case.
